I am very new to this screen printing and I do not know how to use Illustrator yet, so this video will help me learn how to do the artwork and screens. Thanks so much for doing this video and I can't wait for the next one.
Oh my gosh!!! You are a genious! If I met you in person I would literally hand you $100. You don't understand how much I have been struggling with customers on this topic... That you sooo much Matt, have a blessed evening!
very good instructions! i'm in first year graphic design and i have to get the specifications for screen printing my image right before i hand it in so this was a lot of help thankyou
HA! I tried watching this when I just started learning Ai and was ridiculously soo lost, but now that I know a few things, I knew exactly what you were talking about with everything you mentioned and was able to follow along easily. Great video (now that I comprehend it), thanks for sharing!!! :)
This is SO much better than the other tutorial videos out there -- thank you for actually explaining why and when certain techniques are done! Quick question though: for the spot color separations, why not export all 3 colors at one time into a multipage pdf?
Hi, thank you for the video. I have a couple of questions here: Which Pantone color did you select from the color book? How did you create registration marks that were printable with each color? After you made the separations by saving to PDF files, you just send them to the printer instead of printing them out, right?
1st - THANK YOU for sharing your knowledge! 2nd - i'm SO confused! i've never printed to t-shirts before & don't understand the screenprinting process & terminologies. so would you kindly explain... A) WHY when you print the yellow, red, & white do they show as black in the pdf??? B) when i de-select white in my "separations preview" window, it does not go away like the other colors do. i've checked and it's all using a spot-white color. thanks again!
Thank you! I hope this helps me a lot. The printers I'm working with said I don't have to pick a certain color because they mix themselves. Would choosing any spot color work then?
Brooke Tibbs It sounds like your printers have their own set of custom colors they work with, so they would probably match whatever spot colors you've chosen to the closest color they have. Short answer: yes :)
I have a design that's slightly larger than 8.5X11 and I have a large format printer to print my films. In Illustrator it looks perfect, but when I go to print and select Adobe PDF 8.0 it won't allow me to change my size to custom (or any larger than 8.5X11). It cuts off the edges of my design when I save it as a PDF file. How can I change the size?
When you're ready to print, move your underbase the top layer and set it to overprint. That way you can print your separations all at once; no going back and moving layers around. Also, MAKE SURE YOUR TRAPPING IS SET TO OVERPRINT. This was missed in the video. If you just add a stroke to your object it will hide whatever is underneath it, and your separations won't print properly. This defeats the whole purpose of trapping in the first place.
Thank you so much for sharing this video. Question if I am getting an image from the internet what are the steps that I need to follow in order to prepare the artwork for screen printing? Can you please do a tutorial? I pay a lot of money to the guy who does my artwork and sometimes I feel like he charges me a lot so it would be very helpful if you can help. thank you!!
Wow, that's a giant question. There's a reason you're getting charged lots because it evolves things people get degrees for. You might want to watch 100's more videos. Join forums and take a visit to your local community college.
Thank You! I built it with Go-daddy website builder. Are you still interested in learning to vectorize files? Or are you looking for a less expensive artist?
So i was following along to the T, but then... you start going on about this separation preview thing... it shows your chosen colors in that box. mine do not. why?
hi there, when i go to the 'print' option of adobe PDF for printer, i can only choose my printer or adobe post script file, the PDF option is not available, is there a reason for this?

Do you have a video on how to create that pantone color pallet you have?
Thank you! I hope this helps me a lot. The printers I'm working with said I don't have to pick a certain color because they mix themselves. Would choosing any spot color work then?

How are you getting your custom registration marks to print with each separation?
What if I have fine light colored lines on top of a dark color? Should I use trapping (even though the light colored lines will get muted)
La Cocina de Eugenia good question. I would like to k ow the answer to this too.
Very helpful. Thank you!
Great tutorial!
