this is the trouble with melee-based or close-range based opponents in games. They are only fun to fight using ranged weapons in massive hordes, or fun to fight with your own melee/close-range weaponry. A single melee boss against a ranged player is very unfun gameplay. The way to do fun ranged combat correctly is bullet-hell, where you are balancing both dodging ranged attacks and delivering your own rapidly enough that the fight doesn't go longer than you have the health/healing to spare. Except, DST doesn't really have bosses like this. All its enemy ranged attacks are mostly intended to be dealt with by a melee class, so introducing a legitimate ranged class to enemies all designed with melee combat in mind of course will end up very unfun. This is definitely one of Klei's bigger Ls for DST design. A much smarter move would have been to make Walter's slingshot EXCLUSIVELY a utility that can slow, stun, freeze, set ablaze, or draw aggro, but not do any actual damage, meaning his gameplay loop becomes using the right pebbles in the right situations to compliment melee combat in a unique way, not replace it outright.
This is so spot on, it's like I'm reading my own thoughts. The only thing I'd adjust is making the slingshot EXCLUSIVELY utility. I'd say it should be PRIMARILY utility, but if people do want to use it as a boring, but safe damage option they should still be able to.
Walter being turned into a mobile turret that holds F is especially bizzarre since he's the charachter who's braveness in combat is represented with no sanity loss from auras. The whole risk-reward part of his kit is a joke if they just want him to be a ranged character that doesn't get hit because he can ride around and slow everything down. Walter always felt like a mixup of random perks anyways...
@MikhailNijegorodsky That's really not the point I think Walter needs an entire rework. His character is just a couple unrelated perks thrown in together that don't really play into eachother. The skilltree fixes none of that while simultaenously disregarding all of his perks and focusing most of it on Walter being ranged... which as you can tell is boring bcs none of the bosses in DST were designed with ranged combat in mind.
The difference is up until post shadow weaver maxwell has to be careful with prison plus duelists lest you end dealing with 2 terror beaks and a boss. His duelists also have some bad matchups until you can infinite prison, namely nightmare werepig and dragonfly. Dragonfly is especially dangerous as if you have duelists up when she enrages you need to lock her in prison until they all die before you can safely pan flute.
@@ShadowAraun the video showcases walter with shadow rift gear why would the bone helm not be brought into consideration? this video looks like lardee is putting in more inputs than if he was on a character like maxwell or wurt lol

It's just as brainless as spamming prisons but doesn't give you any reason to feel good about it, just sit there doing the same input for a day. It interacts with the DST enemy design in the worst way possible
I feel like this is on par with saying “Is Willow even fun?” And just sitting still while you replace bernies as they die. Nobody actually fighting dragonfly would use just the slingshot. If you are able to get the thulecite and icker rounds in the first place you surely know what kiting is at that point and have the skill to fight dragonfly normally. Walter’s slingshot is a RANGED weapon. It SHOULD do less than a melee weapon, thats the drawback of being able to attack from 3 turf tiles away. Not a single boss in this game was designed to be fought with ranged weapons, they were designed around melee weapons. And even as Walter I believe thats how you should fight. Ideally Walter would have his skills evenly split between Woby, the slingshot, and boy scout perks. But people feel like the slingshot needs to be your main dps for some reason.
@MikhailNijegorodsky you dont have patience. And the reward thta walter has is that u dont need a weapon armor or healing. Just a slingshot and amo. Just like klei intented walter is the fearless and good with his slingshot
@caoinhnamkhanh2795 nah, we can, just add some activable woby skills that Walter has to constantly use to increase his dps or smth like that. For example, a bark that scare creatures and bosses and creatures that don't get scared overall take more damage like in pokemon. A dash that deals damage, a jump like toadstool phase 3. I think those things would greatly increase his fun and dps.

Heavy HP bosses will have that effect with him cuz it extends it even more due the lack of DPS but its pretty much a stable fight once u dont mess up so it will have some players willing to do it I guess
really, perhaps the only good part about him is this slow, since while other characters can do 400+ damage in less than 1 second, even though he is the 'only character that attacks from afar' PS: remembering that this configuration is late game...
To me the slingshot works better as a utility weapon that you use in certain circumstances to make fights easier, and not as a primary damage source, like weather pain and ice staff This vid feels like its saying “is wendy even fun?” And then using abigail to beat dragonfly while wendy just sits there. Theyve given the slingshot more utility and honestly as a walter main i love it
He is. Because his playstyle is very unique compared to many charcaters in the game. Ranged combat being effective is a very rare and having a character that can specialized in that department. makes objectively better. Having the abitity to outrange oponents is better since u dont need armor, healing or weapons since you only need amo to do anything. I think klei is doing a good job with the walter and the only issue i have is that his slingshot is still slow sometimes and i want them to make it faster but with a shorter range. To make it more easy to deal damage but at a cost of some range. Since dps is still worse than darksword dps

Honestly, I feel this adds a completely different and unique character who seems like a bit of a mixed bag of jelly beans still unfortuately. DST has no other character who focuses on ranged weapons as the MAIN focus of the character. They are still developing and changing these characters new skill trees, and honestly this has spiked Walter gameplay by 500% anyways. Idk about anybody else but I forgot he was even a character you could pick until this update came out. I think having more options for different play styles is a very valid option, esp it being a easier alternative in a game that is known to rock your world. I think a lot of long term players will not enjoy walter, but in contrast, ok and newbies players will find it much more enjoyable to cheese some of these bosses with ranged alternatives.

Just did this fight on day 25 with big Woby and Explosive rounds, so no Void grip and Icky rounds. It took me a little bit more than 01 in-game day to beat her (07 stacks of round, half a Thulecite body). It was excruciating, but I knew what I was getting into when I started playing Walter. Outside of bosses, he's still very dear to me. Unfun for everyone else though. Before the beta/skill tree, I melee with Walter like everyone else, things are fine as is. But with the new changes, I want to exclusively use the Sling on bosses, I guess I didn't want to have fun. I will kill Misery Toad with melee though, no way in hell I'm DPS-ing with worse Wes damage.
Why they made icker rounds just shadow prison jr. is beyond me. Then to give him more than enough range to outrange all bosses too (except twins but no one likes the shield atp)
he's definitely supposed to be the "support" character of the list and shouldn't be played alone but even then other "support" characters (wormwood, warly, wicker) have insane damage potential compared to this turret
I don't see the point of this video, nobody's going to get that many materials and spend that much time for a boss as simple as Dragonfly, if you have to test with this many materials it'd be better to try a more complicated boss, or without spawning things in.
Your comment gave me psychic damage. We perform tests by spawning in items so that we don't have to grind through everything. Why would I waste potentially hours of my time, my life to do 01 test fight and then dip out? And all of the items in the video are achievable in a normal playthrough as well, 12 stacks of round = 18 thulecite frag & nightmare fuel. I can get at least 50+ frag and infinite nightmare fuel in a single ruins run. "spend that much time for a boss as simple as Dragonfly" thanks to the TESTING done, you now know it takes that long. Did you know it before this video? No. That's the point of the video. And DFly is a complicated enough boss. See how many casual players can kill her reliably.

See, this is why Walter shouldn't have 16 slingshot skills. The gameplay is inherently too boring and safe for Klei to be putting this much emphasis on damage dealing playstyle.
