    These first gen DMUs have gone full circle, first they were loved, then clapped out and hated, now they are loved again in preservation, I'm quite happy to ride the line all day at the Great Central on their DMU.

    The beautiful first shot of the DMU crossing a swing bridge is taken at Reedham in Norfolk. Both the line and swing bridge are still open, the line being part of the Wherry line from Norwich to Lowestoft. The building on the right of the swing bridge is the Ship pub, a great spot to watch the bridge open and close for river traffic and trains!

    Love these films especially as I am a heritage volunteer. This one I think is the best yet. I am not so sure all these rules were complied with to the letter except during work to rule actions perhaps. Perhaps a retired railman can tell us. Anyway well done and please keep 'em coming.

      I worked as a guard at Kings Cross in the 80's and I can vouch for the fact that many of the rules were simply ignored, by both staff and management. One guard on a main line train had to be relieved at Peterborough because he was drunk but he didn't get the sack.

    I've seen a few of these and the one thing you notice is that everyone seems so miserable. There's never a glimmer of a smile! And at 16.14, no hard hats or hi-vis vests in evidence - just their normal overcoats it seems. Ah, those were the days!

      I think as well you have to remember this generation were not exposed to media much compared to Today where everyone and their aunt or uncle can appear in front of the camera be it the regular media or here on RUclips. Also, I can’t imagine an engine driver these days in their press a button and go ( I know it’s not quite that simple but in comparison to this it is) air conditioned radio controlled cabs being very happy with the prospect of a great deal more work and having to jump out in the pissing rain to the trackside phone whilst getting paid a tenth of what they get now being that happy either!

    At the beginning the driver of the Derby Lighweight set is RELEASING the brake not applying it. I've never known anybody other than a shunter standing as a marker to couple up. The DMU brake was as good as the air brake -you could virtually stop on a sixpence with it. One firm application to bring the speed down and release just before you stop.

    • @mikefandango9455
      @mikefandango9455 2 года назад +1

      It clearly shows the brake pipe falling to zero, this is applying the brake. There was no real difference in air and vacuum breaking systems, in breaking capability, other than vacuum being very slow to release. With regards to coupling and uncoupling, the rules changed that much, this would have probably been correct at the time.

    • @frenchsteam7356
      @frenchsteam7356 2 года назад +2

      @@mikefandango9455 The DMU vacuum brake was quicker to release than the ordinary vacuum brake because of the high side vacuum, last time I drove a DMU [Met Camm] was in 1968.

    • @frenchsteam7356
      @frenchsteam7356 2 года назад +3

      I.ve just looked at the film again -it may show the gauges at zero but to apply the brake you pull the handle towards you, to release you push it away from you.

    2: what’s going on with the four piston train from 1989? ( I think)

      Elizabeth's boiler is still sitting on her frames. She's still intact, the boiler is just life expired and not safe for use.
      I believe the locomotive from 1989 your referring to is the Frudenstein. This locomotive was sold to a private collector in NSW a few years later. As far as I know, it's still running.
