The large format is not bad, but it should be made use of with more full page or 3/4 page panels. Too many bds are all tiny panels, with maybe one 3/4 at the end. The biggest drawback to the size is they’re harder to read digitally, they basically need Comixology guided view to be readable and Comixology isn’t the best with bd support. Manga on the other hand is perfect on kobo sage
Nice follow-up to Analog Comics 👍 Unfortunately any of those series aren’t available in my country and so I’m depending on a English edition. Not counting on a european format for all of them, but at least if they have a nice printing, fine by me. And in first place, Negalyod!!!!
Analgo Comics is solid, fantastic comics channel. Even with your warning, Negalyod is now on my list. UCC Dolores, too. Thanks. Earl, I'm currently ears deep in Berlin DJ music. I discovered the YT channel, HÖR Berlin. Are a fan? I'm really enjoying Matrixxman and Ellen Allien's back 2 back session from August 27. Thumpin' amazing.
I have seen Hör Berlin for some reason ... it's strane: the older I become the more interested I am in electronic music, but I still would not consider myself to be a fan of techno etc.
@@earlgrey862 me, too. I was just curious about both the music and the channel. Then a comment I read had recommended Matrixxman and I gave his performances a try. I really like his minimal techno. I won't say I'm a techno fan, but I am a fan for Matriixxman and Ellen Allien.
Excellent video as always and it goes without saying you are both absolutely correct, nothing beats this format! Hopefully companies over here (that shall remain nameless as they are dead to me ;)) come around and realize this sooner than later.
Vincent Perriot explains it in a CaseMate magazine interview : Both Negaliod (never pronounced in the albums) and the name of the hero Jarri Tchepalt are aboriginal words.Ngalyod is an aboriginal deity and is a serpent-god who stands between earth and sky and controls water (and incidentally life in general). Tjapaltjarri means "the time of dreams" in aboriginal and the name of the hero Jarri Tchepalt is an adaptation.
You are always showing me whole new worlds in your videos. ha ha. thank you. I cannot continue to cry about how these sci-fi original novels are not available in English. Storm by Don Lawrence has some of the most amazing art ever!! I believe he is a British Artist who did the famous classic TRIGUN EMPIRE series, decades ago. Here in Storm, his art looks so much like RANX creator, Tanino and a bit of Richard Corben. Look it up and enjoy! thank you.
Rebellion has put out Trigan and Karl the Viking by Don Lawrence in English in collected form... can't tell you about the built of the books and such, but I would like to recommend these - even though Storm is the best series by him, that's a scientific fact, like Analog comics would say :)
The over-oversized french black and white editions are beautiful, and not as pricy as some similar German editions. (I like the CONAN books in black and white more than their colored counterparts). The reader can decide for himself where to look at and your eyes can wander across the pages and slowly take the art in. Colored sections often seem to scream "Look at me first! I am the important part of this scene!" ... I got the BIG DAMN HARD BOILED by Miller/Darrow in my book shelf and I prefer Geoff Darrows art without a coloring much more than the different "normal" editions.
Bigger is almost, usually, better. At least in what comics is concerned. Most authors draw in medium/large size and, although a few styles translate better when reduced, many do not, specially if they are heavy detailed. Modern printing techniques, a good paper choice might help to prevent a few mistakes and in that oversized “Storm”, probably the access to good scans might have helped with the fuzziness.
And I thought I had unknowingly become part of some scandal. There was so many new comics fans on my site this morning:D But it was you! Thank you for the shout out. I wish you many umlauts! Negalyod went straight to my shopping list. Superb art! The even bigger B&W version is beyond words. There is an english version of the 1st volume from Titan Books . And as we´re touching the size-matters-issue it looks like that the english version is smaller than your colored version...Maybe english speaking people just have better eyesight? BTW is the first volume a stand alone story? Just asking as you find the second books story lacking. UCC Dolores would also be something I know I´d like but no english version available on that.
Glad that I could örlfluence some people to check out your channel. Änd thäänks för the ümläuuts, I'll püüt thääähm intö gööd üse. The first part of Negalyod is concluded in a way, even though it has some kind of mysterious/ambigous ending, but that's not nevertheless a bad thing. Many comic readers over here haven't even realized that there will be a second part. That said: If you can dig some Jodorowski-like weirdness in your comic, you should think about getting volume 2 when it is translated (and order that black & white book straightaway, because it's gorgeous)
Apparently English language publishers can’t seem to resist reducing the size and cost of similar European editions (with a few exceptions). That size is only reserved to (mostly) oversized and overpriced library/definitive/deluxe editions. Shame because it robs the experience to those than can only read/afford local editions.

Das ist kein Auftrag, das ist ein Befehl! 🤨

Don Lawrence Shop is offering all 12 Storm The Collection books in english. Each book collects 2 albums. Not sure if this was mentioned here but I was surprised to find this online store. I thought these The Collection books in english were out of print since 2008. This site however looks a bit outdated and I´m (maybe too) suspicious of anything that happens online:) Has anyone ordered through this site? There is only 3 Storm albums translated to Finnish and I like them a lot so this is quite tempting.
I've only seen the more or less recent "Trigan"- and "Karl the viking"- collections by Rebellion ... two nice series that may haven't aged too well in someone's opinion (I think it's part of their charm), but Storm is obviously the best series by Don Lawrence
I agree, the black and white version is better. its almost as if the color detracts from the overall impact of the art/story. at least in those particular comics
I think that America will eventually adopt the larger size of European albums. Every year, the periodical format seems a bit more obsolete and sales diminish. American genre comics don’t really lend themselves to a manga formatting because they rely on color too much. Marvel already is starting to do these larger “treasury” editions and they recently published that Alex Ross FF book and I heard that thing did really well for them. DC hasn’t really followed suit completely although they have the magazine size Black Label hardcovers which is a sort of half step to this larger format. I recently got a boxset of Druillet Lone Sloane hardcover albums translated to English by Titan and I am really digging them. Titan has published like 8 or 9 Druillet books here in the US, and I hope to collect them all. The pricing makes them very attractive.
Given the popularity of Dog Man and it's printing model -as well as that of most other Scholastic books - combined with Viz's tankoban manga publishing model, I'd say a european model of publishing has already become the norm for the most read comics in america. It's only the ever diminishing sales wise american superhero genre that has yet to adapt. But even there, DC's Black Label seems to be approaching the european model more and more.
Firstly, glad to see Analog Comics getting some love from his fellow youtubers. Secondly, that city scape from Negalyod reminded me of Mercenary by Segrelle, and a a bit by Moebius' Incal art. Interesting. Your description of the second book makes me think a lot more of Jodo's Incal. Thus the obvious question: How does it compare to The Incal? And would you say the Titan edition is would be worth buying? As for Dolores, the art seems a bit generic. There is a certain quality to it one wouldn't expect to see in most american comics - not that they are - but the art seem a bit too american superher comicbookey for my taste. It reminds me of the french The Elves if you're familiar with that series. A french attempt at establishing a fantasy universe in the vain of Marvel and DC's superheros. Also, have you heard? Humanoids is finally publishing that 4th volume of The Metabaron they've had us waiting for the past - what is it, 3 years now?
Actually if there's another artist I would compare Segrelle to it would be Don Lawrence. And no: I would not want to compare Negalyod with the Incal - absolutely not. There's a certain likeness when it comes to the art and even the hierarchic structure of the society and some spiritual "ideas"... but other than that: Incal is a sprawling yet well structured, maybe even tight story, while Negalyod would have benefitted from some editorial, some second opinion to even out the flaws ... storywise there's for an example just too much trite dialogue and genericness to put it even in the vicinity of the Incal. I wasn't aware of the Titan book, so thanks! I'll put the info into the description box... Since this is Negalyod 1, which I liked better, I'd definitely say: give it a try... and even if the story is not really concluded after the first volume it comes to some kind of "ending" that is satisfying enough if you don't want to get volume 2 (which is much more ... demanding). But again, in any case: don't expect sth similar to the Incal!
the influence has become both ways for a while now... for an example: the artist from "Negalyod" Perriot (as James Stokoe) uses some "manga tricks" to convey movements and dynamic
