Nuno Bettencourt is such a underrated guitarist, extreme was that band that didn't know what they wanted to be, they were very good but I still think nuno was in the wrong band!
+thatquywithaface Pinch harmonics, I'd recommend a youtube guide for help with it, but essentially you're lightly touching a vibrating string at a specific point (you need to experiment to find the right spots) with the flesh of your thumb right after the pick makes contact. It slows the vibration and manipulates the pitch. Using your bridge pickup and adding a bend/vibrato emphasises the effect :)
