Idk if there;s chance to get paid in the Canadian forces based on the jobs they have. Also I have learning Disability "Dyslexia" so Idk if they'll accept me. I was thinking about applying in the "Logistic field" but... Idk if they pay you less.
I am a veteran and when I was releasing a few years back there were a ton of people leaving the forces, for better jobs, better pay and better life. They have a personnel retention problem for a reason. I loved being in the military but the military changed so much that I wouldn't want my kids to join. They don't take good care of their people and it is not a family friendly environment. The shortage and mismanagement of personnel created fatigue, anger and very unhealthy morale. All the good people are leaving or already left. Shame on you politicians and shame on your poor leadership. You've successfully destroyed our honor and pride.
Good for you. Your skillset is a lot more useful and rewarded in another occupation. After 8 years I'm also about to pull the plug. All these generals and politicians are out of touch.
Meanwhile as a Canadian citizen I have started the application process in March of this year and only a few weeks ago have I been entered into the competition list.. If they want more recruits they better speed up the process it takes to proccess all the applicants.
@@Truely_Canadian it is a waiting game. I think if you are motivated to join and meet the requirements you eventually get there. I am so glad I waited and eventually joined because I love being in the CAF. Just signed another 13 year contract so the forces are definitely retaining me! Not to say there isn't more the forces can do to recruit and retain.
The Armed Forces gets enough applicants and inquiries, but they don't have the staffing levels or the motivational drive to follow up with enough people in a reasonable amount of time. Good candidates drop out of the recruiting queue all the time. Also, they reject perfectly good Canadians all the time. They reject you if you have a bad credit score. They reject you if you need laser eye surgery and you can't afford to get it -- and with record amounts of nearsightedness due to our lifestyle, expecting an 18-year-old to pay thousands of dollars to get that fixed before they can get into the 2-year queue to join the Forces is just laughably silly. They need to adjust their expectations and have more reasonable standards (you can't expect every soldier to be Superman and then have a toxic internal culture when there are people who don't live up to that). And both the senior and junior leadership need to step up their game and improve themselves. Once you have people, people who were willing to wait around doing nothing for 2 years on the off chance they might get accepted, then they can't leave fast enough. The internal culture of the armed forces is like crabs in a bucket. But we can change that. One way of changing that is flooding the armed forces with experienced professionals from civvy street who can bring a level of maturity and professionalism to the forces. Get those recruiters adequately staffed and get them motivated to get people through the process quickly.
That's staffing. Which is exactly the reason we need more people asap. Related jobs they are hiring for are HR so tell any friends you have in HR careers to check that out. They are hiring.
@@JamieHumeCreative I gotta agree, the staffing is the issue. Not enough good young men and women are joining. However, they're not joining out of lack of patriotism, it's a lack of benefits and reward. I've talked to a few people of my genoration and the common denomation is useally that of pay and benefits.
@@chi_chai what are their expectations? Serious question. O know that there are differences in pay between deployment assignments and when not deployed. Which honestly makes sense to me. It's a bit of a Catch Twenty two that in order to have people understand an updated view of the world and our military, we need more people,,, yet that is held back by the lack of understanding. I know we lost some who want a lot of deployment...who probably should have stayed on just a bit longer because that's clearly the direction we are moving in. Frustrating. I have never seen so many improvements happening as I see now for our CAF. A lot more work to do, but it's very encouraging! Frankly exciting to me.
@@JamieHumeCreative They are not looking for HR professionals with experience, they are looking for people they can make into their kind of HR person... eventually.
damn, that's unfortunate to hear they have a 2-year queue to join the army. I just applied yesterday as a full-time time career but I guess I should lower my expectations of joining anytime soon and get on with my life haha I'm also 26 so I can't wait around for the army to reject me after 2 years anyway
@itchicusscrotumus only now have they started replacing the ww2 era Browning HP and we are still stuck using what is essentially a glorified M16A2 with a Picatinny rail adapter. It would be nice if we had some nightvision goggles for infantry and maybe make the C8 carbine more available to infantry since it is lighter and easier to use in tight spaces. Not to mention the helmet that they use is based on the decades old PASGT system. Just saying it would be nice if we had a better equipped infantry that doesn’t use 2000s era gear.
they may get recruits/applicants but whether they decide to stay and make a career out of it is a different story, no point in training someone if they leave within the first 5 years, it's not only recruitment but retention is a huge issue right now as well
Well that;s the chance you take. What would be comparable? Students switch career paths in College and university, some drop out entirely. Some are expelled. Some just leave because they feel it;s not for them. You don't know unless you try. Even at five years plus or including training, they are still going to be working during that time frame so yes, it's worth it. We have only ever had the draft in Canada once. Everyone is volunteer. Honestly, that's special in my opinion. I've always respected our military and it's been evolving over decades as Canada has been evolving as well. Both men and women in my family history have served. The times are changing again after decades of relative peace and prosperity. We've just ridden a serious pandemic wave and are recovering. Everyone is. I think this new stage in our military's history is quite exciting.
When I was still in university (around 2009), I signed up to be a reservist at an infantry regiment in Vancouver. They put me through so many processes, from checking mental aptitude, health checks, and fitness. Went through all that with months in between steps. Finally they want me to come in for another test, then I said I have a final exam that day and can't. They said no excuses and if you can't come in whenever they want, they'll close my file and don't need me. If that's the way they've been treating eager young applicants like I was, then I have no sympathy for their current shortage. Maybe make the recruiting process faster and more efficient. I hope they continue to struggle to fill the ranks.
The recruiting is the worst branch of CF. They literally sit on files and no one is there to audit them. I worked with the recruiting centres, it's very sad.
@@EmilyAnneAtHome the reserves are trained as a support for Regular force. The training is designed to accommodate people who have full time jobs or who are full time students. If they can't accommodate those people then they defeat the whole purpose of their existence. It was definitely a poor mismanagement on their part and the whole recruiting branch needs some serious jacking, from top to bottom.
@@EmilyAnneAtHome that is literally not the point of the reserves. You are allowed to refuse any deployment you do not want to go on. That recruiter was out to lunch.
I was a 36+ year of the CAF and retired in 2016. During my time in uniform I watched how the recruit process fell apart. When I joined we had all the same tests as they did now and there was a security/back ground test but there were more people doing the security/background test so getting this piece wasn't a problem. Now it can take years for the applicant to go thought the process which is not acceptable. Also in my time there wasn't a need for every applicant to be a university grad nor show that they had the aptitude to become the CDS like today. Remember that the CAF runs because there are Cpl/MCpl/Sgt in the ranks. We all know of career Cpls and those folks stayed in and made the machine run. Not everything new is the best and some ways from the past, that worked should be looked at to see if they can improve recruitment. Boots on the floor is better than files on someone's computer.
Their recruitment process is slow. I applied eons ago, interviewed and emailed the recruitment officer on the status until I started a new jobs elsewhere. One year after the interview, they phoned me to go in for another physical examination to make my applications competitive. I just gave up at that point.

What a mess. I spent 2 years just trying to apply! Granted, the timing was not great as I applied just before the lockdowns in 2019. I got as far as doing the aptitude test which qualified me for all three occupations I selected, but then everything came grinding to a halt. They told me they were only going to continue processing applications for in demand occupations, the recruitment event I was scheduled to attend was canceled, and none of the occupations I selected fell into that category. So when offered, I changed my application to an occupation which was in demand at the time. My good friend who joined a year earlier gave me a heads up that they were going to require vaccinations and so I went and got that done to avoid any further delays. But before my application could be processed, the occupation I changed my application for was no longer in demand and they gave me the same option of either applying for a different in demand occupation or re-applying later (after transferring my application from the recruiting centre I had originally applied through with no explanation as to why). I understand that they were doing everything they could under the circumstances, but seriously, I think they kind of shot themselves in the foot with how they operated during the pandemic, as I’m sure I’m far from the only one who experienced these problems. I’ve thought very seriously about re-applying over the last few months, but at this point I’m not even sure I want to go through it all over again, as they require a new, “updated” application now that it’s been so long 🤦🏼♂️
When I was 18 I tried to enlist, I was showed the door at the enlistment office, tried 3 more times all with the same result. I spent 10 years in cadets, can shoot accurately ( deer hunter my whole life ) can take a order without question. Physically fit. If I were a enlistment officer and someone like me came through the door, I would beg to have them.. meanwhile they want nerds who can handle a Xbox controller and stare at a screen all day.. they don’t want soldiers. I am almost 30 now, 10 years out of my prime, with zero interest to be denied a fifth time.
They dont really want infantry tho, they have enough of that. They need people who can do the computer and maintenance things. Just look at all the in demand jobs every year, its all technical stuff.
Still waiting to get my medical clearance to even continue the application process. Was told it'd be extremely unlikely. Insisted on that option anyway. Here's hoping.
Here are just a few of the skill sets needed in our military right now: good mechanics, dentists, dental techs, electrical, good cooks, computer techs, psychiatrist, social worker, meteorologists, communications, surgeons, plumbers, physiotherapists... if someone is a good hunter not a gun fanatic, but sees more to the military and weapons than just shooting...then maybe you bet. There is such a thing as a sniper. However, our military is becoming this versatile entity that has to deal with many, many kinds of situations: forest fires, floods, cleaning bedpans and caring for people as with the elderly homes in Quebec during the pandemic, supplementing essential services staff in our own hospitals as had to be done in Edmonton Alberta during the pandemic which they cannot always afford to do frankly, peace keeping, moving supplies, Clearing mines...if you think the only skill is how to shoot a gun you sure wouldn't get into Special Forces.

I've always held the reservation that If Canada went to war I would enlist as soon as possible. Not before a conflict and certainly not after. Why? Because I know I would be wasting my time serving during peace time. Simply put, Canada is not at risk of territorial invasion and any conflict involving Canada would be on behalf of our nation's allies. I am not needed, therefore I will not apply. I will be ready, but I will not be fooled.
It took me 5 years to join, between rmc changing its requirements last minute and having to redo fitniss tests because the results became outdated - the joining process is insanely long. I would go months without hearing anything. Crazy
Currently, the Canadian Forces Recruiting Group accepts trained applicants from foreign militaries. These applicants include pilots, logistics officers, infantry officers and other skilled professionals, who may become enrolled in the CAF if they have permanent resident status in Canada. They only broadening the eligibility to include all permanent residents.
I would love to know more details about the other skilled professionals you are talking about. Would you mind telling me where I can find that information?
They better be honest when they talk about pensions. Many folks getting out are finding out their pensions have been devalued by the government without telling them. So folks are receiving about 2/3 from what calculations say they should be receiving. Why isn't the CBC reporting on this???
Give 10 billion to ukraine but can't equip our soldiers you wonder why no one wants to join. I was born and raised Canadian and I always wanted to join the CAF to support and give back to my country but not under this current leadership which is a complete joke.
I applied to be in the army reserve a few years back and passed all tests until they told me I couldn't get in at the very end because I had about $3000 of debt. "We don't want collection agencies coming after us" the recruiter said it gives a bad rep. Just imagine all the man/woman power we're loosing because of that lol
@@ec6052 You say that time it’s a small amount, if that’s so then it should be paid off. Why would the army want someone who is irresponsible. Every situation is different, school loans are. Once you’re in there’s resources you can use through SISIP financial and they will help you with debt. OP isn’t telling the whole truth.
@academylord Probably for the same reason I don't have +$250k in debt paid off.. debt is usually paid off in monthly installments. Just because you're in debt doesn't mean your behind on bills, it could mean he had 10 months left on a $300 car payment. I owe 6 figures and have a damn near perfect credit score. Hopefully CAF also seriously provides our troops with the weapons and hardware to be successful… air defense, actual attack helicopters, amphibious capabilities, working submarines to name a few….
It''s coming, but I would love to see more members of the CAF writing to the PM...politely in an advisory way as to what they want to see and what the issues of the past have been and what to avoid. Also, we have an awesome MP for the military. She actually cares and she is all business. She has an ear for the troops. People complain about government spending but I have never seen a government in vise in people like this one. I feel in my gut it will pay off and is needed asap. There are a lot of needs in getting Canada up to scratch with the current world as things stand now. I agree with your list ...and DRONES!!! We have two excellent manufacturers in Canada now that are making fantastic vehicles. I really like the approach to uniforms being update tech every five years compared to doing everything every twenty. Smart. Perhaps that will be applied to everything else?
At face value this is true. But you can have all the equipment in the world, but at the hands of an incompetent manager (as we have today) those things won't mean anything. For example, if we ever get around to having an attack helicopter. What operations will it be used on? How will it be sustained and exercised? When incompetenacy is at the core of the issue, addressing it with shiney things will only go so far but won't provide a lasting solution. Soldiers still fix, maintain, manage, supply, train, exercise, and deploy. If incompetancy is what makes all of those things happen (or not) then the soldiers are the ones effected at the end of the day, not the shiney toy.
I want to sign up but im having issues with the online process :p they sent me a code to validate my account and it didn’t work so i am at a stand still.
The whole recruitment process needs to change. When I joined in 1985, I did not have to be in the best of shape, basic did that. Now if you are not in top top shape, you will not be accepted. I joined when I was 17, in March of 85, when I was in grade 12. By September of 85 I was in Cornwallis doing my basic training. I heard now more than a year can go by before a recuit is accepted. The government also needs to keep political correctness out of the military. The best people for the job should be accepted.
It can even take 2 years. And you are right, I went to a talk by professor at the Royal Military college, and he was talking about the special forces-ization of various militaries, and how those higher requirements do not lead to improved operational effectiveness for the force as a whole. Yes, certain specialized units will need high standards, but the rest do not.

Pre-1985 was very abusive. I wasn’t in when cards came in, but I did have a fellow soldier take my rifle, charge it and threaten me for several minutes debating with my fire team partner on whether he should k1ll me or not. That was 1993, leadership made me the weakest link despite topping my basic, being the youngest in my course and securing a competitive contract for operation harmony. Leadership was very poor despite us doing hood work in the former yugoslavia. Woke, terrible word, but good to hear you are a man’s man. Before I went to school to become and Aircraft Mechanic I wanted to join the military as an Aircraft Mechanic. I went to the recruitment base and was told they are not hiring for the position and that I should go to university instead and join as an officer. I'm a Canadian citizen who applied 4 years ago and I did well on the CFAT test and they never got back to me. Still waiting for the call to move to the next step. I went to my recruiting office last month and was told that they will call me to do a medical test. The Canadian military is a joke.
The issue isn’t the recruiting pool the issue is the forces is not showing they are a preferred employer in this country when you get treated like a child and the mamagnent aka officers have totally failed
I’m Canadian born and raised, I was in cadets for 5 years and when I was finished I wanted to join the army, so I applied and took the aptitude test (before covid) I didn’t pass, they didn’t tell me how close I was or what I needed to work on other than math, fast forward to last year and I heard they needed more people, so I called the recruiter this time they told me how close I was the first time I took it(I was 1 mark off on the math section) so I bought the CFAT training app and studied for a month or 2, and went to take it again, the day i took it there was only 2 other people writing it with me, i didn’t pass the second time, this time I actually did worse, after being informed I didn’t pass, i again asked them for advice on what to study, the only advice they gave me was to study more math, and that I was “ a few off” .I know that at least one of the other 2 people taking the test that day didn’t get in and I don’t know what happened to the other guy, that recutting Centre is the only reg force one between Hamilton and the us border so it covers around 1 million people, they only do aptitude tests once a week and that day maybe only 1 person passed his CFAT, so 1 in a million people every week get in to the CAF every week in that area.
Just gave the test 2 days back. I'm wondering if you got a chance to talk about which roles may qualify for your score. As it is I understand, there is no pass or fail. It's based on percentile.
You don't fit their racial quota young man. All jokes aside I do hope you achieve your goal on joining the force, the cadets would have been a great program to go through.

As a former recruiter at the Toronto recruiting centre, the issues that I noticed from potential candidates were the following; 1. Poor pay. 2. The contract times. If you want all of the “bonuses “ you will have to stay in longer. 3. Postings. People want to be close to home ( for some reason). Plus you have to move around every 4 to 5 years. 4. Lack of overseas posting or tours ( peacekeeping or otherwise). Retention is the biggest issue facing the CAF , not recruiting.
You only need 3 years or 2 years, if you were staying before you enter as a PR. When I was interested they were only hiring citizen, now I am, I lost interest.
I am currently serving as a member of RCAF, as long as any foreigners aka PR holders can get through Security clearance that would take more than 20 months or 2 yrs depending on their individual conditions or situations, shouldn't be any problems. I believe CSIS has already established a security clearance program for PR holders that would filter unqualified applicants.
Is anyone surprised the Canadian Military has recruitment issues? Scandal after scandal and low wage and vets being told assisted suicide is a solution? We have top tier war fighters but they are under equipped, under funded and under appreciated. We seen how our troops were treated after Afghanistan, The Military also very high standards which is great but all those standards go out the window when there is a conflict. WW1 and 2 were fought by farmers lawyers DRs Labourers and highschool drop outs. Yes there is high-tech equipment now but highschool drop outs today grew up using that tech. You need minimum grade 12 and a clean credit score to join CAF, if they really wanted recruitment to go up they should put the funding up and start ROTC programs for highschool seniors who may wish to have their education paid for serving the country 🤔 I know they offer some of that but not on the scale needed for a country our size with the population size. WW2 Canada had 1.2 million service men and women for a population of roughly 12 million people. Today we are closing in on 40 million with a standing force of 60 thousand regular and 50 thousand reservist 🤔 110,000 troops for a population tripled in size? I know it was war and many volunteered but Canada should have a military of 400,000 equipped war fighters through all branches to meet security and international requirements.
@@Bruh-bc4tb may have changed with recruitment being low, when I was a kid and tried to join you only had to be 17 to enlist so grade 10 tracks, I remember when Afghanistan kicked off I checked and I can remember grade 12 or GED but they also considered trades and specialists like Drs and lawyers, they also do credit and background checks which didn't happen when I was trying to join

In the lack of recruiting, there is 2 simple solutions. Number one Canada brings in to law. Mandatory Minimum 1 year service. After grade 12. That'll give them the options. To either pursue a career in the military. End, I believe also inspired them. Through working with technologies. Option 2 Is giving everyone a reason. To join
We are trying to get residents who are not citizens into OUR military, yet we won't let someone who has not completed high school components? I think we would have a much greater retention of the armed forces had a high school education program for those who don't do well in the typical school system.
Graduating high school is not that difficult. Someone can graduate by completing more accessible classes that still lead to graduation. How could someone serve in the military competently if they couldn't even pass high school?
Because those residents volunteered to do something most Canadians never will, the CAF needs all the help it can get. Obviously, you were too lazy to do any research before commenting, most NCM trades require nothing more than a Gr 10 education (if that's too difficult the military probably isn't the right fit for you), or you could join as a reservist at 16 and get 6 high school credits for just finishing basic.

“No point in training someone is they leave in the first 5 years”
Why? It’s not like we’re fighting any wars and if we do, they can just reenlist? 😂
@@JamieHumeCreative There's nothing exciting about the path the CF is taking...

@@Migmaw the requirements vary for many different jobs
Give PR to international students for joining army. Make time long like 5 years. U will see droves enrolling.
Mostly because people don't want to go where they are discriminated...
wdym?
Maybe if Trudeau stopped fighting wars for WEF we would be ok.
How bouy we start letting guys go into the military with criminal records after a review process to Alternatively serve there time like 2 years less scenario and actually start fixing the criminal problem. The only guys that are going to want to do this are guys that actually want to change.
They do let people in with some kinds of criminal records, yes. I don't know if this is a recent change or what, but that's how it is right now.
@Kirstin Morrell it is a possibility they can but it should be encouraged training is real rehabilitation and i would considered it a repayment to the public.
After the 1B budget cuts and literally the CDS being present applauding Hunka? This is going to drop CAF's recruitment goals and it's reputation.
I was in for 4 years and that's all I wanted to be in so I did my bit but I don't think I could get in today with all the examination and tests and stuff. I just don't do well with that sort of thing I've never considered myself an intellectual. They wouldn't have got my 4 years.
hen Canada protect us, we will protect u.
Canadian Army is a Joke . All Feminists wokes there . NATO fools !
When I was in about 8 years ago, the number of soldiers we had at that time was around as many as we had back in WWII. I'm curious about what the numbers are now.
Dude we definitely did not have 600 000 soldiers in 8 years ago
@@djnotnice108 That's what a visiting Captain was telling my unit, that our numbers weren't as low as they were since WWII.

If you all think the enlistment process is slow, try being a Vet and putting in a disability claim. I am sitting on 3 years now for a decision to be made on a knee injury from my service. It’s the federal government that’s a joke
@@saintjohn5974 you aren't too smart. Have you ever heard of America? Do some research before babble about something you obviously know nothing about
Residency and education are separate components of the recruitment process. Meet the minimal educational requirement (Grade 10) and you're fine.
Sounds to me that you want to build a UN military And not one so favorable for Canada!
Do you need to be vaccinated
