Yes he is super.....is there surgery to get rid of canker? I thought I heard him say something about that. Of course that would be expensive for sure so even if it is available, you would have to decide if it was worth it as she is unpapered and you wouldn't breed her I would imagine as the offspring would not bring the right price.
@claudiadickerman4218 She is unregistered, or at least he cannot obtain her papers. He says he thinks he has found her original family, but they divorced and are NOT on good terms. Luna is at least 18, possibly 20, according to her teeth, per Jr's vet, and he agrees, although her body condition suggests age 15. But JR adamantly refuses to breed an unregistered mare and if an older mare is NOT kept in the habit of being bred, it can be very difficult to impossible, to get one bred again if she has not had a foal in say as much as 5 years, and is 20 years old. The canker surgery and follow ups can be 3 to 4,000.00 depending on where you go and how many feet are affected. As many as 18 x-rays are needed.
This is great information and teaching. Please let Reuben know he is teaching a lot of people - what a kindness to share his knowledge. The amount of canker in her hoof was astonishing to me.
You should see how much he trimmed off Boaz from the nice rescue center up the way run by the family that showed Jr how to wrap hooves. It is crazy. I didn't know that much of a horse's foot could be removed. Boaz is still healing but is looking so much better than the trainwreck he was.
I have seen a lot of farriers on the screen and in person, as I worked as a veterinary nurse and they did a lot of large animal work (farm animals etc) and also a lot of horses as an equine practice (unfortunately the senior partners were very involved with the hunting fraternity, before it was made illegal in the UK, as contradictory as that is as vets as they saw the fox as vermin as disgusting as that is). I have Never seen a farrier of this skill, grace and aptitude. His instruments all look brand new and sharp enough to cut air. He literally looks like poetry in motion. He makes it look effortless and I am simply in total awe at his God given gift. Luna could not have been given a better chance then with all of your tender care at home and now with this maestro. I pray she makes it and what ever the result, you can both know that you could do no more and have put in a super human effort to heal her. Many blessing to all of you this season and may the spirit of the Lord walk amongst you as you tend to his creations.
I just love Ruben. He is such a good ferrier. Especially when you were talking about the shape of Beautys foot and he said: "You got to remember that this is the foot she got. We are not going to try to make it a nice and round foot, we are going to make it a strong foot. Because this is the shape she got." ❤️ I'm praying for Luna and Beauty to get over their thrush and Olivers not get any worse and Ruben lots of health.
My husband was a talented farrier. He, like Reuben, shod horses as they naturally were, not trying to make them what they were not naturally. I was so glad to hear Reuben say that "we might get ourselves in trouble if we do that." I saw many other farriers make the mistake of trying to "fix" conformation issues with bad outcomes. You and his community are so blessed to have him.
We had a horse I believe had this canker when I was younger. She was gypsy vanner. My grandpa made her her own paddock of nothing but pea gravel, put in good drainage tiles around it. I remember the prep work took forever and I wasn't allowed to play in the sand lol She did go out on pasture 2 times a week, only if sunny and warm. When she came in her feet had to be scrubbed well, treated, wrapped. Her stall was right onto the paddock so she could go out any time she wanted, and the horses could visit her. She did get over it, took like 2 years of scraping and packing and nothing but dry, I couldn't take her out on trails either, I had to ride my sister's old baby pony I hated it
All the subscribers who want to, let’s All pray for Luna bcz God is still working miracles even today!! If we all pray for her and this family I’m believing God is gonna heal Luna’s canker!! ❤❤❤

The work shed is fantastic.I have never seen a metal ceiling before. I’m surprised that he was willing to be recorded. It was a great up close view of the work of a ferrier. Great video. Keep up the dedication to healing the canker. It is a very slow process, healing a fungus infected fingernail on a human takes MONTHS, it heals from the nailbed outwardly. Also, anaerobic microorganisms do not need oxygen to multiply or replicate which makes them so persistent and difficult to annihilate. They are deadly.
They are collectively not known for their compassionate care of draft animals. Use them and discard them is the rule with some. Thank goodness JR has found an ethical, caring farrier in Reuben. ❤

Luna is SO GOOD LOOKING. Great confirmation. Good looking hoofs, nice/unique, black color. I wish you could breed her, if she is not too old to do so. I still pray you get her registration papers.
You are working on Luna’s feet in the very best way! You are doing the very best you can to help Luna, Beauty to ultimately save their lives! It is something to see how Luna ran from JR! Bless her sweet heart!❤️🌷❤️🌷❤️🌷❤️🌷❤️🌷❤️🌷❤️🌷
I thought I wanted to be a Farrier & I was looking into a Farrier School in OK & all the Farrier courses. I was going to take every course offered & be completely educated in that, but in the end, we weren't in a position to drop our lives & move halfway across the country just like that. I don't have any regrets about it & I wish everyone the best who goes into that rewarding career 🐎🐴🐎🐴🐎🐴
It is so good you saved Oliver when you did, he took a long to heal, but he is living his best life and more ahead! 🥰 I love the girls, too; Oliver has a special place in my heart🥰
Hang in there with Luna care. You are doing an amazing job and giving her a chance, to see her moving outside must have been bliss. Loving your animals the way you do to hear your disappointment tugged at my heart.❤❤❤❤
JR i’m wondering whether it’s worth going back to your old farrier friend that gave you the recipe for the concoction that you put on Luna’s feet. Maybe he has some tweaks to the recipe that he can tell you about that might help. It’s worth a try. I really and I admire your dedication to helping Luna. I wish you both and your family a very happy Christmas.❤❤❤🙌🏻
Just about to start Luna's part of the video. Fascinating listening to Ruben and love his shed! I could live in that! Just something I noticed, Beauty's belly, or is it too early to show, if she is in foal? So pleased Oliver's and Beauty's hooves are doing ok. I'm sure that is a relief for you both. And now onto lovely Luna... Luna is always in my thoughts and I hope she starts improving with the canker. She's such a beautiful mare.
My heart goes out to you guys with your struggles trying to rid your horse of canker. All the years I have owned horses, I never had a horse with canker. I found your video very informative and I enjoyed watching the process of trying to combat the disease. I wish you all the very best and I'm hoping that the final decision may not be putting her down. The way things are looking that may be your last resort. She is a really good looking mare. It would be a shame. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you all. You're working hard. Take care and good luck.
Thank you for giving Luna pain meds before treatment! I can't get them for me, but at least I can ask. Poor animals can't! God bless you for thinking of her pain level 🙏❤
Oh man, it's that whole side of the frog. Poor Luna. I think surgery is going to have to be the answer. I think it's her only shot at some form of normal and less painful life.
I think you're right. Doesn't seem that aggressive topical approaches are working. How much is that surgery and what time does the rehab take after surgery. One person who follows this podcast has suggested a "Go Fund Me Page." That indeed may be the approach necessary to save Luna.
You’re lucky to have a farrier with such knowledge and experience near enough to visit. Reuben agreed with your treatment, JR. Reuben did a masterful job on Luna. Sad that Luna is now shy of treatment. She is beautiful.
Sending Luna healing prayers. She's been so very good. Reuben earns every cent! Three gorgeous horses! Bless you for caring for Luna and all the animals.
Reuben is wonderful to share and teach so much. Love his new shop. Thanks so much for your efforts to care for, heal, and manage the foot issues. Chuckled watching Oliver listening to you talk about him. His ear just picked right up when he heard you say that he was a good boy. 😊
Awww, that was so sad to see her moving off now, and not even accepting a treat, dang, 😭 good thing y'all are patient, and perceptive, and may positive change come for you. Thdnk you for taking the time that something this comext takes.
Just a tip! Bleach water and kopertox are both pretty strong and will kill not only bad bacteria but good bacteria as well. For thrush I always flushed or soaked with epsom salt, and then packed with a mixture of desitin and copper sulfate powder.
They tried far less invasive methods for weeks, as you outlined, plus using sugar to draw the thrusk or canker OUT, and it only GOT WORSE. They only got to using these harsh chemicals over a long period. Her last owner was ready to put her down. They have treated her feet every day, every few days, etc. They have also packed the feet with powdered antibiotics per their vet.
FOR LUNA, the rescue Clydesdale, they tried all of that, as well as also packing her foot with antibiotics. She only got WORSE. THAT is why they went to coppertox bleach soaks etc. All has been under the guidance of their vet & farrier.
@@BetsyAmosSugar would feed the yeast though so it would make it worse, help the colony to multiply, better using a different method to draw out moisture but sugar should definitely be avoided when it comes to thrush. I’m a human medical person not horse but sugar is literally nutrition for yeast.
God Bless all three of you for working so hard for Luna. I know you are so sensitive to what Luna can or cannot do. She will have her best possible life at Homestead Horsemanship.
Reuben even uses the correct words for sulcus, ehich means valley or fold, when he says "sulci" to indicate 2 of the structures (the folds in your brain are sulci) , and knows anaerobic pathogens are those that don't live in areas open to the air. And he seems very knowledgeable about structure and medical treatments, like only using the copper sulfate once per week. I am very impressed with him and it is fortunate he was available to care for these horses.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Can you imagine the money men like Rubin and those with this knowledge can teach on line to those of us who would benefit from these life lessons. I love this video. Thanks.
I was really moved by this video. I could see how Rueben was working so hard to help fix the problems, and JR and Emory working so conscientiously for over 6 weeks, and Luna herself, trying to be as patient as a horse can be. And she came to the end of her understanding and patience 😢 Really respect everyone's best efforts here! Thanks for sharing this difficult and disheartening situation. Trust JR and Emory will know what to do to move things on. ❤
Thanks for sharing Luna's process and progress with us. My heart goes out to you! So much work! People who don't have horses would not understand how hard hoof treatments are, even when the horse is cooperative. I have had horses for 40 years and had never heard of canker. It sounds dreadful! Learning a lot from you. Praying that you can get results to save her life!
Thank you to Reuben and you guys for really going above and beyond with Luna. That re training is going to pay off. She's just tired of being in pain. Have a very Merry Christmas🎄!!! Cheers from South America Uruguay🇺🇾
18:04 you don’t have to go to black & white for the RUclips algorithm, you can just ad a sepia tone filter. It’s looking for red blood but it doesn’t care about brown. The sepia tone is the better option for the audience because colours help differentiate between things on the screen
Has anyone mentioned giving them probiotics? There's a vet at Dr. Mercola's office that may know how to help. Her name is Dr. Becker. People and animals need probiotics and it needs to be a good multi strain one. I hope you all will look into it and not dismiss this. We love your channel! ❤️🙂🙏
Ruben is a very good Farrier, a real professional..what a Gift you found him and he can help the Girls…❤ Poor Luna, she was very brave considering she knows it hurts when someone messes with her Hoof…❤
I think it's great that you guys are trying to help Luna. So many draft horses have kanker and get no treatment. It doesn't look easy to treat. I really enjoy your channel. Ty for sharing!! ❤
Echoing the Please thank Ruben request. The most useful thing he said was, "cheesey" when he got to the canker. That helped me to see the difference between healthy and not supposed to be there, tissue. The second thing that really helped was, a growing organism- canker v.s. bacterial-thrush. These couple of comments really clarified for me, what I was seeing. 👏😊
@AlpacaMade In the past, Both Jr and Reuben have commented on how bad the canker smells ( as they dig down to it and remove the chunks). I get the impression from JR it is close to nauseating.
Such an ordeal, dealing with that thrush problem with your Clydsedale's. Something that should be factored-in for anyone thinking of owning one. I learn so much watching your videos. Thank you so much for all the work you put into making them. Good, quality content. Poor Luna. Can't say I blame her from running. She's probably not eager to go back in that stall, either. Run, Luna ! 🤣
Ruben really is a fantastic farrier, he knows his stuff. He does such a beautiful job with these big hooves. Well done on treating Lunas feet, you’re fighting an awful battle there but doing a great job, it’s a noble job too. Lunas back right is definitely improving, the fact Ruben couldn’t find it initially shows the improvement. I’m so sorry things have gone a bit backwards recently, it’s definitely not a mistake, you needed to debride that canker JR. I pray for more improvement and for pain free healing for your beautiful girl. 🙏🏻 Thank you for your efforts JR.
Tell you what you guys, I was glued to the screen for this video. About 4 inches from the screen to get a really good look. That didn't really make it better, and seemed like I was there. EXCELLENT!

@@claudiadickerman4218 he did say that he's never seen canker cured without surgery. never look a free horse in the mouth or the foot.
@2CalaLilly They did not want to go the very caustic route until they had to. In part their area has had a lot of rain, which has NOT helped.
@claudiadickerman4218 She is unregistered, or at least he cannot obtain her papers. He says he thinks he has found her original family, but they divorced and are NOT on good terms. Great Video. I'm so sorry to see Luna afflicted by this. I wish we had a Ruban in my part of the country.
I love that you guys and Reuben are doing your best to give Luna as much of a chance as possible. I'll add Luna to my prayers, she's a good girl!❣🙏
What a beautiful building! Ruben is so knowledgeable and informative! So glad you have him to care for these sweet, gentle giants!
You can really see what a hard job being a farrier is….Reuben is amazing!
I was really moved by this video. I could see how Rueben was working so hard to help fix the problems, and JR and Emory working so conscientiously for over 6 weeks, and Luna herself, trying to be as patient as a horse can be. And she came to the end of her understanding and patience 😢
Really respect everyone's best efforts here!
Thanks for sharing this difficult and disheartening situation.
Trust JR and Emory will know what to do to move things on. ❤
❤ I love Luna. I hope she will get well soon. She's beautiful and sweet. I have her on my personal prayer list. ❤❤❤
How very sad for these heavy horses! Just a bad roll of the dice for her. Prayers for Luna. 🙏🙏🙏
Has anyone mentioned giving them probiotics? There's a vet at Dr. Mercola's office that may know how to help. Her name is Dr. Becker. People and animals need probiotics and it needs to be a good multi strain one. I hope you all will look into it and not dismiss this. We love your channel! ❤️🙂🙏
Ruben is a very good Farrier, a real professional..what a Gift you found him and he can help the Girls…❤
Poor Luna, she was very brave considering she knows it hurts when someone messes with her Hoof…❤
Oh Rubin, please help her...lots of prayers😢
Go Slow and steady for the treatment on the canker. Patience and persistence.
I think it's great that you guys are trying to help Luna. So many draft horses have kanker and get no treatment. It doesn't look easy to treat. I really enjoy your channel. Ty for sharing!! ❤
Luna we are all here for you! Keep the faith LUNA!!!❤❤
@BetsyAmos Probably so. Clarifying, I'm a dog person. I've never been that close to an upside-down hoof so this is all a learning curve for me🤭👍
@AlpacaMade JR has been explaining why they have done each step. They did also change her diet, to eliminate sugar from that.
Reuben, your shop looks great!!! Very nice work! God bless you Reuben !
Oh man, that canker is some nasty stuff. Sending prayers for healing on that beautiful mare.
Run, Luna ! 🤣
I posted before seeing Rueben show how canker looked as opposed to thrush. His explanation was so good.
She’s beautiful I hope and pray her feet heal quickly and pray fora miracle you’ll get her papers. God bless you.
Thanking Abba for your farrier. He’s phenomenal at his craft! Praying for complete healing in all of their feet in Jesus mighty name! 🙏💖
Tell you what you guys, I was glued to the screen for this video. About 4 inches from the screen to get a really good look. That didn't really make it better, and seemed like I was there. EXCELLENT!
