Huge Garden Shed Project | Attempting Restoration of Victorian Wash Copper

- With much of the United Kingdom covered in a blanket of snow and ice there was not much chance for cracking on with jobs in the vegetable garden this week.
So, at a loose end, I have FINALLY attempted to start the restoration of the Wash Copper from the Victorian Wash House that was hidden amongst trees and undergrowth just metres from the back door of our farmhouse garden in Staffordshire, England.
This room hasn’t been used or accessed properly since the early 90’s.
In the previous video, we cleared out the inside of the wash house and discussed our plans for the renovation of this space
We have so many ideas for this space but needed advice on how best to tackle a refurbishment of the cast iron window and the wash copper above the fireplace. There were lots of comments in the previous video with much advice for us, so thank you. The main suggestion was to use wire wool discs on a drill or angle grinder to clear the rust from the cast iron wash copper.
In this episode I start the process of attempting to bring back this piece of Victorian history to its former glory. Things don’t go according to plan though. Am I left with my vision for this space in tatters?
With Duncan’s help I also create a replica cover for the wash copper, something which ours is missing. This was fun to attempt, as DIY is not our strong point!
This is a truly exciting project that is going to prove to be the central hub of the vegetable garden in due course. I’m hoping to be able to store vegetables in it, such as beetroot, onions etc as well as potentially use it as a potting shed. The wash copper I hope will store compost in spring for seed sowing and potting on and use it over summer/autumn for washing off vegetables.
Most of the tools used in this video are DeWalt, cordless 18v tools. Well used around the farm, always reliable.
What would you do to this space if it was in your garden?
Thanks for the watching. Hope you liked the video. Please considering subscribing for more content. Videos released every Sunday at 8:30am.

What use would you have for a functional wash copper in your garden?
Compost storage?
Washing vegetables?
Thanks for watching!
@TheFarmyardGarden I definitely would use if for storing my compost.
Seems a great idea doesn’t it? The lid to keep pests out too ❤️
im would keep my compost mix in it or use it for mixing up different compost mixes in
Agreed - use the pot to mix compost. I don’t know if you could heat it up with the fire below to sterilise compost you want to use indoors. The old sink could be used as a potting tray maybe.
Excellent! We are all on the same wavelength ❤️
I understand why you feel bad but dont. it was just to thin. if you can find another wash bucket and its in good shape thats the answer. you did nothing wrong. love your channel
Thanks Robert. Pretty devastated as it was looking so good!
I can really see it having a use, especially for a garden. Washing vegetables, storing compost in early spring for seed sowing.
I really want a grate making and the wash copper needs to be operational to be able to light a fire.
@TheFarmyardGarden could a friendly local welder make a patch?
in my grandma,s house when i was a kid, before the council modernised the house, there was a wash boiler copper in the corner of the kitchen, she allways called it the set-pot, i remember her using it to make soup in during the winter, & because there was quite a lot of soup, the neighbour,s got some aswell, i,ve saw them for sale on ebay, when you type in, cast iron, the chimney also needs a new chimney pot, & a wire bird gaurd put in the top, the blacksmith could sort the grate out to light a fire, then get some bacon bone.s or a gammon joint. & make some broth, or some yellow split pea soup, or lentil soup, it would be lovely to see it boiling away, & the smell would be lovely too, good luck with it,
@ what a lovely memory. I can imagine the smell was lovely when it was boiling away.
The chimney will be repointed when the weather warms up a touch. There’s some pointing that needs replacing in other places too, and yes, a bird and rain guard for the chimney is really needed too. All in the plans in due course 😍😍
OMG, I am beside myself, I cant beleive you didnt clean that wood off first...🤣🤣🤣
Duncan didn’t tell me he has a sander until it was finished! I’ve never seen that poor tool before, clearly left languishing in shame for not being a DeWalt. I’ll sand it when the taps have thawed so I can jet wash the algae off and let the wood dry.
In my defence, making a lid for it was a last minute add on to the video after I broke the copper. There was going to be a whole lighting the fire and seasoning the cast iron again.. oops 🤣😅
You never know how thin the metal is when it has been sitting under the rusting process for so long. Even if you had left it, it would have degraded anyway. Chin up, girl!
Thanks Sylvie. I was surprised it has no holes in it, in the first place, especially as it was full of planter material from the vines which ingressed in to it
I’m glad to have some options of a solution 😍
Oh Clare 😢 you didn’t break it, time broke it. There is no way you could have known and there was nothing you could have done. And out of this issue a new pot has been found 👍👍. Looks cold there 🥶🥶, it’s sunny here today and 8c. Great job as always, Ali 🥶🌞🇨🇦
That’s a lovely way of putting it Ali. Thank you for saying that. 🤗🤗
When I look back on the footage, I can see the pitted area where there is now a hole. 😭
It’s fate to have found one. As soon as the weather picks up we’ll be going to collect it. Not worth the risk in the ice. Forecast to be warmer over the next few days, thankfully
Hope it’s not too cold there. Stay warm xx
God it's so nice... I can't wait to come and be a squatter in your wash house I mean..... what a lovely wash house
lol! 😂
Looking forward to watching the renovations. Definitely patch the hole. I am inspired to open up my old wash house to see exactly what is in there… The lid was great.
Oh wow! DO IT!! I’m trying to set up a free patreon so people can share their pictures with me too, as I’d love to see everyone’s gardens or projects. I’ll definitely be interested in having a two way street sharing wise there.
How exciting!
You still should get the wash bucket repaired and use it for a planter outside the wash house. It would be fitting. Love watching this process with you.
I think a planter would be great. It won’t need repairing then. A drain hole is handy 🥰🥰
Hi Clare,
I felt so gutted for you...but it was inevitable particularly with its history and the amout of rust that had built up...but well done you for sourcing a relpacement!!! 👏
Thanks Annie. I’m picking the replacement up this weekend 😊😊
I admire your “can do” attitude. It’s coming around. Baby steps, it’s a marathon, not a sprint!❤
I love that saying, alongside Rome wasn’t built in a day.
We WILL restore it to former glory. It may end up not being with my wash copper, but it’s still an original wash copper. ❤️❤️
@ ❤️👍😊
Years of use and water sitting in there......no way was that your fault.
How cool that you found a wash basin so quickly and in such great shape too. Fab price too. Just had a look and around here we're talking $200.
I'm finding this restoration sooooo interesting. Great content!🥰
Wow! The price is more than fair. I’m very happy. Can’t wait to go and pick it up ❤️
I’m glad you are enjoying it, as it’s always a concern when it’s straying out of your niche’s lane. 😬😬
Oh no... there is a hole 🕳 in my bucket, oh Henry, oh Henry, there is a hole 🕳 ...
It's a bummer that it happened, but it is so great that you found another one.
I know it will look absolutely fab when the project is finished.
My garden is still frozen solid and still has a sick frozen white blanket of icy snow ( South Yorkshire). They promised warmer weather for tomorrow, and hopefully, it will be gone soon. I'm so sick of it now. I want to get out there and put my hands into the soil.
I love that you say oh Henry.. we say dear Liza here.
I’m so gutted about it but I’d rather know it was this weak before it was full of boiling water to drop all over my feet.
It’s just a slight mishap, it will all workout in the end
You are both right, First it's Henry singing to 'dear Liza' the it's Liza singing 'then mend it dear Henry etc'. Oh and the third line is 'With what shall I mend it dear Liza' ...scintillating it's not 😂😂😂😂😂
Oh dear, there are rust converter & rust reformer paints that turn rust into a metal that can be painted. Much easier & safer than the wire brush. Well, you did your best, no guarantee the paints would have worked, as the bowl was so rusted out.
True. We’ll never know if it would have prevented it going through. 😞
It’s sad but you don‘t broke it, it was the time and luckily you got a new one👍
Thank you for your kind words ☺️
It looks so cold there at the moment. You did nothing wrong with cleaning the copper bowl it was just too rusted but Facebook marketplace has all these little gems. Tip for your glasses. Wet your finger and wipe the inside of the glasses and it stops them misting up. Good old motorcycle visor tip. Give it a go. Lovely update Cant wait to see how the rest of the restoration goes.
Loved seeing all your animal running around 🥰
Great tip Emma! I’ve also had rainX suggested too.
I’m so excited for the rest of the building. ❤️
Aw, you can still use the original one as a feature pot and plant up - it already has a drainage hole!
Absolutely perfectly placed drainage hole too. It’s like fate intervened 🤣💕💕💕
That was my first thought as well!!!!!
Or you can enlarge that hole, install the plumbing and make a sink out of it.
@spring_spirit I could but I want to be able to light the fire and I can’t do that with a plug in it sadly
That was a great start to the restoration Clare, I know it didn't go to plan but at least you found a replacement and if it was that thin anyway maybe it's better you replaced it now. Love the top you and Duncan made, looked like Boudicca's shield. I'd say that was a lovely job Clare 😊❤
Thanks Bethan. I feel so much more positive about it now 🥰🥰🥰
Lovely job 😝🥰🥰
I can remember my Mum doing the washing in one of those, then she had to heave the wet sheets out to put them through the mangle. The copper has probably got thin through so much washing being done in it, so don't feel bad about the hole.
Thank you Trish. So many stories of people remembering using them. I love hearing all the tales.
I imagine wash day was quite the chore.
I do have access to a mangle I can collect to restore too. Might leave that to someone more qualified than me to do though 😬
Oh no Clare I’m so sorry! But that’s fantastic that you found a new one. I love your wee washroom - It’s going to look fabulous!
I love it too Jenny! I picture potting on with compost in the wash copper in spring and wash vegetables in summer/autumn ❤️
Your intro said 'it didn't go as planned' - I sat on the edge of my seat. I felt your devastation when it broke through but SO pleased you bought that bargain of a replacement. Enjoying the 'washhouse renovation'. Thanks for taking the time to share with us.
Thank you. I haven’t picked up the replacement yet, due to the road networks being icy at the moment (and it being a 330 mile round trip to pick it up)… but I will do in the next couple of weeks.
I think it’ll end up better, as the one I’m picking up has far more integrity than mine. ❤️
Duncan the hero!
Always!
I loved this video so interesting xx
Thank you Nancy 😊
Awww I’m so sorry that happened. When you started, I was afraid there were places that were only being held together by the rust. But great luck finding the other one. What will you do with the rusted one after it’s repaired? A planter maybe?❤️🐝🤗
I had blind faith that it was going to work out ok. I’m so upset but I’d rather now it was compromised now than risk boiling water leaking out of it on to my feet… that’s how I’m trying to make myself feel better about it
We had a hard frost! But the same breaking water for me chicken but tbh they do it better them selfs!
They have such sharp beaks for that job. Horses just standing their waiting for help 🤣
That washboard brings back memories of my mom (and me) washing clothes using one of those.
My only childhood memory of a washboard was using one as a percussion instrument 😬😬😬
Sad about the wash Copper, but love the one you found, the lid you made with Douglas and the wash board. The damaged copper would make a plant pot for our side of the washing house. Xxxxx
Thank you
I am so pleased with the lid that Duncan and I made. It’s a pretty good replica I think. Proud of that. Really sad about the wash copper but hopefully we can increase the longevity of the use for the building with the replacement.
Oh Claire I really felt for you there, glad you found another one to replace it, keep going, Tracy 😊
Thanks Tracy. I was pretty sad. It’s a lot of extra work but I think it’ll help the building to last for generations to come as a piece of history 😍
Awww sorry the copper basin broke but amazing to have found another- and like one of your other viewers said - you could use it as a planter- great idea!
I think a planter would be a fabulous idea. Sorry, only just found this comment in the “held for review” section…although I’m have Deja vu and think I’ve replied to you already ha !
Onwards and upwards great cover and the washboard was a bargain. Thanks Claire.
Thanks Sheila. I honestly feared a dollhouse one was going to arrive 😬😬
Left handers rule ok. I can understand you doing this because I would but what are you going to use it for? Can be fixed. Well done. New wash copper!!!
Left handers are slowly taking over the world 🙌🏼🤣
I have a few ideas for the wash copper. I’ve been planning an outdoor sink anyway, to wash off and prepare veg. I can now do it in this building. I plan to have a liner made for the copper, in order to store compost in there over spring, and it may well become my potting shed instead at that time of year.. as warmer… and I hope to have power for coffee making during the pricking out time of year.
I’m quite excited about being able to keep the space looking very authentic/original whilst also being able to adapt it to my current needs.
Thanks for watching ☺️
It's amazing how things work out that you found another basin I am so pleased for you. 😊🎉
Yes, what are the chances of finding another one? Amazing isn’t it? ❤️❤️
Well done for the lid. Bravo 👍 ❤
Thank you 😊😊
I was thrilled to see an update on the washhouse. Thank you!
You are welcome. Sorry we didn’t get around to doing more with it… in fact we created a backward step 🤣
Oh Clare, I'm so pleased for you. From what I read, they used to cook the Christmas pudding in the wash house sink! 😊
Ooo a time before pressure cookers and microwaves! How lucky we are eh?
I’m thrilled to have found another one and the seller, Michelle, is LOVELY! I’m am looking forward to meeting her when we collect it. Waiting for the weather to pick up first 🙏🏻
Hopefully the temperature will rise this coming week @TheFarmyardGarden
There is a reason for everything. Turned out well in the end. , 😀
Very true Mags! It felt like fate. ❤️
What would look nice for that cover, is a shou sugi ban, burnt wood finish then just a clear wax.
That is going to be such a lovely space when you have finished Claire. 👍
Oooo I’ve seen this! I like that look. Not sure it would have been something people did back then, but I’ve seen others do it and LOVE IT. 💕
@TheFarmyardGarden That’s a very valid point if you want to keep it authentic. I’ve never seen an original one, but would guess it was just bare wood just sanded a bit.
Looking forward to watching your progress with it.
@Petetrenouth yeah, I think it was and probably bleached at some point too
Make it into a drain hole with new plug fittings 😊
If I didn’t want to light the fire, that would be the most perfect solution ❤️
Oh clare, my heart went out to you when I saw how sad you were! I'm so glad it turned out better in the end though! What a magnificent find ❤
I think I felt every one of your emotions 😅🤗 Tilly x
All of the emotions Tilly. Huge ones.. not for public viewing. 😬😬
I think it’s going to work out well in the end, so I am very much calmer now. More work .. but hey ho 🤣
Thank you for sharing the burden of emotions with me ❤️
@TheFarmyardGarden I bet, I held my breathe when you saw it, then it cut to your lovely dog having a great time.... Then back to you 24 hours later... Such a powerful moment as a viewer to watch that!
I just wanted to hug you, but then good news 🤗
Jeez, I was up down and then up again 😂
So glad it worked out so well in the end, and how exciting! 🤗🤗 Tilly x
Things happen & it seems like this is going to work out well. Your ability to go forward & make the cover is inspiring, the teamwork to make the cover makes the dream work! It looks great! 🎉
Thank you. Once I realised it has to come out for a cast iron weld repair anyway (it will have to be heated up for that) it seemed to make the idea of changing for a new one less daunting.
It’ll still be an original wash copper, just not mine.
Glad you can get a replacement! Onwards and upwards as they say! You might also be able to get replacement windows and door from market place? Well done 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏💕💕💙
I think I’ll measure the window and keep a look out. Not sure the one we have can be restored now 😅😅😬
there is JB weld, reinforced epoxy putty and many other bondo for those holes . you can have a look if you can use it to fix it as its not that hard to do.
I did look in to that but I said it’s not heat resistant and I want to be able to light the fire 😬😬
Coucou 👋🏻 👋🏻 👋🏻
Magnifique travail bravo À vous 😊
A bientôt
Salut. Merci d'avoir regardé.
Prenez soin de vous 🥰
Love it🎉
Thank you ☺️
OMG Clare what a brilliant job you’ve done with that lid it’s fabulous. I’ve got to say I’ve got a bit of tool envy, I love a power tool. Love the little kitten too absolutely gorgeous. Enjoy the rest of your weekend. X
I had no idea Mable was on camera like that. I did try to pick her up a few times but she was only interested in the baler twine. I’d have got Duncan to film her properly had I known she was in the frame 🤣❤️
He loves his DeWalt tools, almost as much as his Ford/New Holland tractors 🤣
You should be able to fix that hole yourself Clare . Ask Duncan where does he keep his old gunbarrel fittings and select a reducer and plug of the appropriate size , probably 1" , you might have to file the hole slightly. These fittings are available in plumbing supplies places 😅 . Before doing anything though you should tap around the bottom of the copper with a light hammer in case it's rusted through somewhere else .
When I was a lad people used a thing called a pot mender to repair holes in kettles and pots etc . Ask at your local hardware shop and get laughed out the door.😂
I hope you're being sponsored by DeWalt for using all their power tools. Thanks for a most interesting vlog , much better than gardening in frozen ground .
I have screen shot your comment to show him!
I’ve heard of pot menders. Weren’t the little steel discs? I’m sure I have seen them.
Duncan does love his DeWalt tools. Reliable for repair work around the farm. Not sponsored.. had them years. 🤣
Loving the restoration Claire.
Love your energy and enthusiasm x
Thanks Barbara. I hope we can finish the job, as I’m itching to tackle the window and then move on to the storage solutions I need
Thoroughly enjoying this, wonderful undertakings, wish for you to find wash basin
Thank you. I’m going to pick one up in a few weeks ❤️
Great job Duncan. I love all the work you did Clair 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thanks Belinda. I like how between us we can make a vision come to fruition. It’s EXACTLY how I wanted it look like.
Thanks for watching … hopefully he’ll help me build the new fruit cage next week too 😂
You really come through adversity, it looks amazing. Captain Clare vibes. Looks fantastic. It'd be my heated potting / cuppa tea shed. So the bowl would be potting mix.
And Duncan was wearing jeans! 😂
You can hammer a patch or use fire to fix it, or even better create a drain to reuse the water for watering the plants.
I’m thinking if the other one does work out well, this one would make an excellent planter 🥰
For a new wash basin. Use the old pot as a form and get copper sheeting big enough to cover it and pound it into the shape.
Funny you should say this! We’ve been debating doing this method to made a liner for the new one, so I can store compost in there in spring, making it a bit of a potting shed
What a fun project! Glad it turned out okay.
It’s not the end of the world to have damaged it. We have options now. I’m quite looking forward to making use of it for the garden in the future
I am really enjoying this series of videos, can't wait to see more!
It’ll always feature, as I really see myself having compost in the copper over spring and potting on in there but washing my veggies in it over summer/autumn ❤️
Glad you’re enjoying the shed series ❤️
What a bummer after all that effort! The cover worked out well though. One step backward, one forward. It’ll all come together x
I was devastated Clare! It was looking so good! In fact it still looks good if you don’t shine a light in to it 🤣🤣🤣🤣
@ I’m sure Duncan must have something in the tool shed you can use to save it. You guys have it covered 👍it’s too lovely to replace
Creo que lo primero es reparar la ventana de hierro y poner los cristales que faltan, saludos desde España
Yes, it’s a high priority 😊
The garden shed is coming along. You can replace the glas in the window. Soften the glacing compound with a heat gun. Remove all of it. Go to a glass cutting place and have new glass cut and roll a snake with new glacing compound for both sides of the glass and shape into place and press it with a putty knive at an angle so water runs off.
I think it needs the frame fully restoring first. We want to do it but not the best time of year, so it’s on hold for a month or so. Don’t want to remove all the glass, to work on the window in this weather. Bit chilly 🥶🥶
Hoping to be able to restore it though, more than replace with a new frame. We shall see. Lessons have been learned 😬
I love watching you restoring this sweet building. Are you considering repurposing the basin for something else? If nothing else the hole will allow for drainage in case you were to use it as a planter.
Thank you. I am thinking in the modern era that I’d like to store compost for potting up in here in spring (maybe have a copper or pewter liner made for it) but then in summer/autumn I would like to be able to wash vegetables in it to prep them
@ that sounds brilliant!
You could just put the new wash copper into the old one so it would be always removable. Plus you don’t have to remove the old one, which could be a struggle.
(Depending on how you’re planing to use it. )
There’s been a huge development this morning. Apparently with a manly whack the wash copper does move! It will come out! D’oh! 😬🤣
So if I might suggest: take this pot with the hole and take it outside to use as a planter. Reduce, reuse, recycle as they say. 🇨🇦🇨🇦
Yes.. I think it would make a lovely planter ❤️
Great job!
Thank you 😊
Omg Claire what an end result! Loving it! Think Duncan's enjoying it too!
Sending hugs I know how devastating it was but only small hole and could have been worse. But you wouldn't have found the one on fbI
Take care and have a great week x
Duncan doesn’t believe in suffering in silence Chrissie, so I can confirm he was suffering by all the off camera chatter 🤣😝
It turned out wonderful though didn’t it? I’m so happy. I’ll probably dry out all twisted, Duncan wanted to use a new piece of wood.
I’m so happy the was copper didn’t fail when full of boiling water. That would have been a disaster, if wearing non waterproof Skechers. 😬😬
Felt like fate to find the other one. Waiting for the weather to improve and will travel to pick it up. It’s a fair jaunt away.
@TheFarmyardGarden 😂😂😂 his face looks less grumpy....... Keep feeding him the happy pills 🫣
I'm glad you didn't use new wood as it would look right with the vintage style. Guess I understand his line of thinking though.
Omg no as we'd be visiting you in hospital sweetheart. Very lucky.
Will the people keep the copper for you or is it worth someone who's nearer collecting for you and we can move it nearer and nearer for you xx
@ the lady is lovely and is keeping it for me. Hopefully I’ll be able to pick it up next weekend, as I’ll go with my sister (she won’t mind the long drive there and back. 😊
What a lovely thought though, so kind of you to even thing that could be a possible plan. Thank you xx
@TheFarmyardGarden awwww that sounds like a good road trip for you. Make the most of it and stop for lunch. Treat yourself xx
Well I was thinking you are such a lovely lady and have made lots of friends through gardening. That people wouldn't mind shuffling it a bit closer for you sweetheart and it I could of helped I would be willing. We all need a little help from time to time. The weather hasn't been right for making any kind of long journeys. Stay safe and enjoy your road trip xx
Well my heart sank - but then how lucky to find another on FB! Could you use the old one as a planter outside the wash house door?
That would be ideal, wouldn’t it, good suggestion!
Wonderful video Clare! You can see the garden is completely frozen, so was great seeing you turn your attention to something different and interesting! Awwww felt gutted for you when the base gave way, but it was fate to find such a rare item on market place when you needed it! Glad to see Duncan wearing trousers in this freezing weather! Although like Dave hates them lol can’t wait to see this all take shape… for the lid I’d be scrubbing the underneath with bleach and water rather than wait for it to dry then sand will clear the algae better 😊
Thanks Pammie. I was completely devastated but I feel so much calmer about it now. Can you imagine if it had failed when I had boiling water in it, especially if I was only in skecher shoes. Must better to know now. The one on market place looks fantastic solution. I think this one will become a planter in time.
Duncan hates jeans too but he hates chilblains more. Whoops HA!
I wanted to jet wash under the lid and had planned to use bleach, as you suggested that to help give it a more aged look. It’s primarily why I snubbed using a new piece of wood.. I wanted aged HA!
I can’t wait to have it as the central hub of the garden. I’m so happy you’re excited about it too. 😍💕
@ I’d perhaps just get duncan to cut a bigger hole in it and line with mesh then use as an outside veggie rinser for all the super muddy veg
Yeah totally not worth the risk, soon be spring tho!
Haha you’ll never hug the age on that lid 😂 warms up a bit next week so hopefully things will thaw a little!
@@Garden-of-weeden true, but better than brand new for my aesthetics lol
Will have to see what it ends up as. So many options
@TheFarmyardGarden I can’t wait to see what you come up with! It’ll be something good I just know it 😁
@Garden-of-weeden hope so ❤️
Oh Clare, I could have wept for you then. You did the right thing to stop filming and assess the situation. Finding a better wash bowl is incredible. You must be so pleased.
I'd definitely wash vegetables in it. I have a stainless steel sink and draining board in my garden and use it for allsorts.
The lid you made looks just like the original would so well done 😊
Thanks Linda. I was just too heartbroken. I know that sounds silly, given the state of the world, but in that moment it was overwhelming. Obviously, upon reflection, I’m still sad it happened but I’m not being overly dramatic about it now. Can’t believe I found one. The owner of it, Michelle, is so lovely. Can’t wait to meet her and she’s looking forward to seeing it being used for its intended purposes again.
I always wanted an outdoor sink for washing vegetables, so it makes complete sense to use this now (when fixed).
I’m so proud of the replica lid. I wonder if they ever bothered making one for it, as I find it hard to believe it’d be discarded.
@TheFarmyardGarden It's not silly at all. All things are relevant to that person. And I know you were so excited about the wash house restoration.
But you sorted it out, and that's what matters. You will get so much use out of it, I'm sure.
I bought the birdhouse seeds and looking forward to see if they grow 🤞so thanks for the idea.
Onwards and upwards 🙌
@lindajones3015 I’m so excited to sow those seeds. I might have them hanging outside this building next year! I’ve seen someone make a lamp out of one now! 😱😱💕💕💕
@TheFarmyardGarden That's incredible! Who thinks of these things?
I've ordered two more metal raised beds, bigger than my original ones 🙃 roll on spring! 😂
@ oh wow! I love it! Exciting
To help with the goggles/g;asses fogging, get some Rain-X Anti-fog and apply to the inside of them. This was what was recommended to my wife when she played hockey and her glasses and face shield kept fogging up. It worked like a charm.
What an excellent idea! I have rain X for the shower screen in the house, have used it on a car I used to show as well. Never occurred to me it might work for misting up too. ❤️
Hi Clare, oh no! I'm so sorry that's happened to your wash basin but, hooray getting another metal bowl ❤ what a fab top for the bowl, a lovely job, and using recycled materials too! Great video. Thanks for sharing and take care 😊
Thanks Christine. Glad you enjoyed it. Always a bit of a worry sharing content outside of my usual gardening niche.
I am so pleased with the lid and thankful we have some options for the wash basin now. Fingers crossed we can make it even better than it was. So grateful the basin didn’t fail during boiling though and cover my feet in scalding water 😳🙏🏻
See you next week 😍
Didn't know you were left handed with everything! I'm left handed with some things and then right handed to write which is so irritating so I never know what I should buy till I used it
Oh yes, I’m very much left handed for everything. A lot of people are like you and do a bit of both
Sitting holding my breath while she's grinding like I'm worried I'll breathe in the dust, lol.
I’m ok 🤣🤣
@TheFarmyardGarden lol good to hear!!! 😁
@@BeardedDad72 In hindsight, I think I should have used a more industrial mask but better than nothing 😬😬😅
So enjoyed this Clare! I LOVE building/restoring things (I think it is the power of the power tool! 😄). Devastated for you about the copper, but what a happy ending! It's going to be magnificent I just know it!😃
I have to say, move very grateful Duncan likes to collect all the tools!
“Have we got…?” Is generally met with a “of course!” 🤣🤣
I’m so sad about the wash copper. I should have left the bottom alone but at least we have a couple of solutions 🙏🏻❤️
Super video clare. I'm always so impressed with DIY (though jealous of ppl who have all the tools - and a Duncan! 😂). Lovely snowy garden scenes too ❤ oh and the kitten cameo 🥰🥰🥰
I am so grateful Duncan and his dad seem to enjoy collecting tools. I just him to work on his ability to share them a bit less reluctantly 🤣
Duncan is very handy… if you go back and watch the jigsaw bit again, you might spot some blue plastic when he’s using it! One of us cut in to the bench… one of us wasn’t me 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I wish I’d known Mabel was on camera like that. I’d have gotten Duncan to film her properly. She wanted the baling twine that was dangling
Kerry, I was thinking that Mark could build you a Victorian wash house in the garden/plot, cover it in brambles and then you could find it. Next thing you know, you’re on 5,6,7K subs.😉👍❤️
@@jimmyconnolly3461 🤣🤣🤣 don't think we aren't all wondering how we can suddenly *discover* a victorian wash house in need of restoration! 🤣🤣
@@dogontheplot we’re in full agreement 😉👍😂❤️
You pair have cracked me up! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
sorry if you’ve already covered this, but what was that basin originally for? washing clothes? washing fruit and veg harvested from the garden? since it doesn’t have a drain and the basin is attached to the counter, how was it emptied?
Hi. It’s a Victorian Washing Machine, of sorts. There’s no drain due it having a fire underneath it to warm the pot of water.
The fire would be lit to boil the water and the hot clothes washes done first. Before the water was allotted to be less hot for the more delicate clothes.
They’d scoop the water out when finished on to the floor, as is slopped to a drain hole in the corner opposite the fireplace.
The residual warmth from the fire would dry out the rest of the basin
Oh no Clare! Sorry that happened. Yes it must of been used so much the fire would have made it thin over time. Glad to hear you have found another one though and that lid looks fantastic! You could always convert this one into a planter now you know it has drainage.
It might be worth posting on reddit to see if anyone has removed those bowls before and if they have any tips? You might be lucky and it is just stuck in the concrete. You might want to try heating the bowl with a blow torch to dry out the concrete around the rim to try and pry it out?
Lovely seeing your horses. Thank you for sharing a video of them. I wonder if horses notice the steam from their noses and mouth like we do or hearing the crunching of the frost on the ground?
Looks absolutely freezing there! Is that snow on the beds or frost? Couldn't tell but was the lake/ pond frozen? They said it has been the coldest Jan for 15 years and can quite agree. We got down to -6c, when normally it would be about 2c this time of year. By the looks of things the north will be warming up quicker than the south. I hope that there isn't too much flooding there.
Just had to dig out some carrots in the frozen cold frame for dinner! Was very cartoonish pulling! Snapped a couple, saves cutting them! lol Also got a pitiful handful of pea sized sprouts and a sprout head to bulk it up lol. We still have some home grown potatoes in the workshop. Glad that there is just 3 of us to feed today! lol Making a parsnip and swede puree and roasted butternut squash with veg from the shops. Think we still have some homemade yorkies in the freezer so won't starve.
Hope it warms up for us all soon. Hopefully the cold weather will have killed off a few pests. Have a great week!
I really hope it’s not difficult to remove the bowl. Be interesting to hear who easy it was for the person I’m buying the other one from, although they were ripping it out, so I guess it was of a salvage situation.
I think the one we have could easily make a nice planter. It’s certainly up for suggestion.
It’s a mixture of snow, that partial thawed and then froze solid. Very icy. Hard frosts on top. There’s been some thawing today, so that’s good news… well I say thawing. The grass isn’t as frosty but the ground is still solid.
I can well imagine it was a challenge to harvest those carrots! Fair play to you. I did chuckle at it saving you from chopping them up 😂
Forecast to warm a bit next week. Hope so for all of us
Stay warm.
@TheFarmyardGarden Be careful of what i call "Metal Knickers" advice. Sometimes "ripping out" and salvage don't always go together.
You could line it with a pond fabric for a bird bath. Look out for those large chimney stack pot things. The standard type we have would be too narrow to hold it but those square ones would be fab.
Yes i had better times trying to scoop out our no churn rhubarb crumble ice cream than trying to get these babies out delicately! lol It was like kypton factor, trying not to disturb the others. It's a plastic cold frame 3ft high too! lol
Think i am going to wait until temps get back to normal and pull it all out now. Whilst, i found and removed the caterpillars from the spring onions, i think some bigger grubs have gone underground again as one looked knobbled from the middle half way down. Think i will need to reset it again and remove them for the new year.
Keeping it real it's just 3ft x 1ft x 2ft plastic coldframe. I can't self sustain in our garden for potatoes, carrots and onions but like to have them for special meals. I resow carrots every 10 weeks or so. We get 1inch x 5-6inch carrots. We are thankful for everything the garden provides in our small but large London garden.
Last year was hard growing year but we did good on beans. Will be a great source of food, these next few months.
Yes we had a day of frost to clean off the old car windows. but forgot we had rain that had frozen on the windows. Think that frozen rain was worse than the frost day. Was sharing my can of de icer with the neighbours as was dropping off hubby as was cold and he doesn't drive. I don't drive much these days because of my back.
I was thinking back to 2010 winter weather with snow and black ice and remember doing a 360o downhill, down a back road coming home from work before coming to a mini roundabout. I was so lucky as i remember the build up of parked cars over the years and lucky i managed to clear them all, both sides and even escaped the two cars coming either side of the roundabout!
My Dad wants to give me his newer automatic car but one of the reasons why i still have my 2005 manual fiesta since 2008. I sometimes even miss the manual choke on a car, from my previous cars. I am so lucky that it is still good for ULEZ in London and remembered that my car tax was cheaper because of its eco rating. You wouldn't think that with the amount of tax i pay now and most of the roads i drive on have poorly built roads, with lots of pot holes.
You probably think i am a soft Londoner but it might be true as i don't like the cold. A few nights living rough before i was able to be put in care as a very young teen in the 90's, kinda makes me feel privileged to live in a house now after all our hard work in IT before sickness. I always make sure in our teachings that we show where our food comes from as well as where we live.
We are carefully watching the flats being built at the end of our garden, across the road and hopeful in the height that they will be stopping as it blocks out our light. It is very stressful as we worked so hard to move away from that and the noise has been getting to me.
My garden is my therapy and keeps me sane.
Sorry might delete so not as to negatively affect your channel.
You are sharing a lot of your life. I might be brave as you soon and i am still practicing again to post online.
Happy to talk about private info in dm's. As an ex IT specialist for the BBFC and working with the inception of online data protection and NDAs, i feel an added pressure of what i post online. x
Oh, I really felt for you when you broke it, but what a brilliant solution you found. Hope it's not too hard to remove the wash bucket. This is such an exciting project. Well done on the lid, both of you.
Hope the weather warms up for some gardening. We're getting some warmer days next week, tomorrow will start with -11 and then go up to +4. I'm looking forward to it, so much ice all over the city.
Have a great week!
Trude
Oh Trude, I was properly devastated. I just had no words. I couldn’t film any more in that moment. I’m so glad it happened before it was full of boiling water, to leak over my feet though.
I am so pleased with the lid, from all the pictures I’ve seen it’s pretty much how it could have looked all those years ago. Wish the original one wasn’t missing.. if indeed they bothered to have one on this one.
-11 is pretty chilly! WOWSERS! We have some slightly warmer temperatures coming to this week. I hope the ground thaws. I’ve a fruit cage extension to build.
Take care. See you next week.
i can understand why your devi stated but look at the end result, your doing a fabulous job and its lovely to,see it moving on . xxx
Thanks Allison. I feel so much happier to have some options, even if id rather not have to remove it at all. 🥲
Metal is very thin, not your fault, as you say good job you didn't find out whilst using it. It's great that you have a replacement copper.
It could have caused quite the injury, I’m still sad though 😭😭
I’m excited to have found a replacement ❤️❤️
You could use a’pot washer’
I’ve heard this mentioned a few times. Like little metal discs?
When I was a child we had a wash tub like that in weekly use, it got a hole and was mended by patching above and below the hole with a nut and bolt and some solder I think. Carried on using it until mum got an electric washer with the mangle on top in the late 50s
Ooo this is very interesting!! Thank you! I’m going to pass this on to Duncan and the blacksmith. I’d resigned myself to using this as a planter, with a ready made drainage hole 😞😬🤣
I love the sharing of history stories this project generates. Fascinating. I had no idea how washing was done, which is probably why I’m so misty eyed over this find. ❤️
Where would we be without baler twine 😂. I can understand how you felt about the copper, but what a find on ebay. We live in a bungalow which was built on what was a farmyard. Sadly we have no buildings but the houses next door have the original pig styes. They are used as garden sheds and what i wouldn't give to have had one of those in the garden.
I have the original old dairy in my garden, although the door is on the wrong side. I believe they later kept pigs in the dairy back in the day too.
It’s connected to the workshop now, so full of a tools and racking with spare parts. I often thing it’d make a nice gym/hot tub/sauna space .. then I remind myself I’m beyond middle age and not la de da 🤣🤣
.. also yes! Baler twine for the win 🤣
@TheFarmyardGarden Yeah, i'm past all that too 😆
it is all about 2 kW angle grinder and a thicker wire brush.
😭😬 I’m sure there won’t be a next time, but if there is….
Shame about the copper pot, but glad you have options clare. Thats a great top youve made for it! Until next time...
Thanks Danny, I am so glad I have options for it. Making more work but I always wanted an outdoor sink for the vegetables, so it seems fitting to get this operation for that role
Lovely bit of editing Clare and live seeing the animals👏❤
Although its a shame about your copper victorian bowl, I think the replacement will look much nicer.
Its great to make use of wood already in your garden. Its lioiking great all finished and what a perfect fit!
Excellent teamwork! 👍👏😃
Looking forward to the next installment.
Have a great week ❤️ x
Thanks Linda. Enjoyed making the cover, I think we did a good job creating an almost believe replica.
I’m sad about the wash copper but also pleased it didn’t crack and fail during boiling hot water. Imagine that landing in my feet 😬
Team work (also known as off camera bickering) definitely makes the dream work.
Glad you enjoyed it. Hope it’s not too frosty in South Wales. Take care x
use for washing veg... u will have to see if you can find an old mangle that they used to press the water out of clothing to go in there
I have soured one! Need to pick it up. Local farmer has one. 🥰🥰
If it was that thin and brittle, then likely even hand scrubbing with a brillo pad would probably have still at least cracked.
Better to replace it now versus dumping boiling water out the bottom due to heat stress.
Absolutely. I’ve been saying since it happened that thank God it didn’t fail when full of hot water. Blessing really
I don’t think I touched it with the actual wire brush, I think the handle on the side poked at it 😭
How did they wash clothes in that basin?? 😮
I imagine not as well as we do now with modern machines. It’s a good job all the photos from the era are black and white 🤣
I think it can be brazed with copper solder and a Oxygen Acetylene torch.
I have a trash cauldron i use as flowerpot.
That sounds a good use for it
I’m so unsure which option to take in terms of rectifying this. The one I’m picking up is definitely in better condition. I suspect mine is thin like this in other areas too
@TheFarmyardGarden I think the new one will look fabulous! Those i used for decoration, i think i just wirebrushed them and used a bit of graphite stove shine on them, i gave them to my mom later, but but the one currently in my garden here is a small cast iron cauldron i found on an old landfill on my fathers farm, it was smashed into pieces and incomplete, but i decided to bring it home anyway and plant strawberries in it so the strawberry whines did sort of climb out from the cracks on the side, but i big disadvantage i discovered was that it dries out very quickly, much faster than my ordinary flowerpots with full bottom and only drainage holes, this bottomless cauldron drain and dries at least twise as fast... ha ha So i probably have to plant something else in it this summer... However the cast iron ages very well outdoor. I was very close to use the old toilet as a flowerpot too last summer, but my old father quickly picked it up and drove it to the communal landfill with the water still splashing out on the road whan he wisited and apparently he know me... ha ha! i don't think i ever got rid of trash that fast before... Ha ha!
It was just too thin. So don't worry about it. If the other basin does not fit for whatever reason, you can resin this hole (The Works have a resin coaster set for £3.50, so you could use that rather than buy a big bottle). Use Kurust or similar to kill off the last of the rust. Then oil it (any) to give it a barrier and sheen. I would still do this and have it as a spare. When the wooden lid has dried I would give that a coat of protection too (oil or varnish - whatever is your preference).
We did think about the repair kits you can buy, and it is very tempting, but they’re not rated as heat proof to light the fire under it, and it’s hit and miss if they’d be waterproof to hold the pressure of water if the bowl was filled for washing veg.
I think if I was keeping it solely as a display piece then yes, absolutely what I’d do and a great suggestion. Thank you ❤️
I need to jet wash the lid when the taps have thawed out and I do have some clear Osmo protective coating.
Wd 40 works wonders on rust😮 left on
I went with the majority. To be fair it’s probably better that I know now. Can you imagine if it cracked and leaked boiling water all over my feet?
Broken or invented a plug hole?
Positive spin!
I want to view more and more
I will be sharing future updates 🤩
I saw the pictures of this you posted on a local fb group, the today it pops up on my RUclips feed. What are the chances
Does that prove our smartphones are always listening? 😬😬
Hello village neighbour 👋🏼
@TheFarmyardGarden
I think it probably does lol 😆
Good to see the progress your making.
We are moving to the village next month though only from a few miles away.
Sub' d so hope to see more of your channel
Can someone explain how these wash coppers were drained of water? I mean there is no drain hole in the bottom and they look extremely heavy. How did they use these wash coppers?
The would be scooped out and then wiped out with towels or the residue heat would dry the remaining bits
@TheFarmyardGardenoh, ok! Thank you!
I was just thinking that no what's a angle grinder?
It did its job… I think it’s because it’s used to clean or cut “angle iron”
Thank you ☺️☺️☺️
Off of in the first minute. 😉😂👍❤️🥂
Just for you Jimmy. Did it make your eyes twitch? 🤣
I doubted myself and had to rewind. Then, I laughed. You got me.😉😂👍❤️🥂
You just broke it!!!!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
@jimmyconnolly3461 🤣🤣🤣
KITTEN!!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I had no idea Mabel was quite so visible on screen. I’d have gotten Duncan to film her properly. She was after the dangling baler twine. She’s so funny ❤️❤️
And gorgeous too.😉😂❤️👍
Everything can be fixed :)
It’s a tricky job apparently to weld cast iron.. well not tricky, but as it needs to be heated up properly to cast iron weld, it has to come out anyway. 😭
D.I.Y , or doing it myself as I like to call it, is always a learning process (which includes face palming fails). The copper is probably too far gone for practical use, it will however make a cracking pot for growing hostas.
Facepalm fails .. had many of those! 🤣😭
I’m glad it happened now before I had water in it boiling away and a crack opened up. Can you imagine that when wearing inappropriate footwear? 😳
I was going to use some of the rust removers but was worried how effectively I could clean them out with it not having a rain plug (well.. it didn’t, it does now! 😬)
I would use it to wash my vegetables 🥕🥕
It will be perfect for that won’t it? ❤️
As many others said already, you didnt break it, it was already gone beyond repair.
Thank you. There’s been so many kind comments ❤️
We/you need to give yourself some grace. You are human.
This is so true. Thank you for reminding me to be kind to myself too 😊
If you haven't done anything else to your cauldron, take it to a traditional blacksmith. They can get it fixed up for you.
I’ve shown my farrrier. He doesn’t work in cast iron but a local tradition black smith does.. he’s very busy. Hopefully he’ll come and look at it soon.
Hoping to pick up the alternative one though too ☺️
