This was remarkably helpful! I was thinking of getting that exact truly victorian pattern for my upcoming cage crinolin, and I think you just convinced me to do it ahaha
I agree making one of these and the elliptical one are so worth the time and money it takes because it is so strong and I can use them for so many of my ball gowns.
Dang, I gotta get me one of these crinolines. I really like this particular shape, and I wouldn't be likely to wind up putting that much weight on it in actual use XD
I'm not sure on the historical reasoning behind the bag of the crinoline but the two hoops at the very bottom of the bag are essentially stacked on top of each other and the third hoop in the bag is also very close so I speculate that the reasoning for the bag and not extending the ribbon is this much closer distribution of the hoops and the fact that the bag is easier to make and manage that distribution. For elliptical crinolines I've seen people add weights to the bottom and the bag allows a space to place those weights.
Yep. It stops you from stepping through. Lessens the trip hazard, stops the bottom hoops from snagging on things. (Really important when getting into wagons, buggies, ect.) And protects the bottom of your crin from excessive wear. In reenactment I repair and replace that section a lot.
Very helpful video! I just have one question. Is that white strip at 17:27 waist tape? I am making this crinoline right now and seeing markings for horizontal twill tape at the cincher pattern pieces, but there is no mention of this in the instructions or in your video. The amount of grosgrain ribbon you're instructed to buy also isn't enough for both ribbons and waist tape... I'm confused!
Yes it is waist tape but I will say when I made my first crinoline I skipped this and have never had an issue. I did put it in my new one but I spaced out on talking about it. I can't speak for if the pattern includes purchasing it or not because I buy twill tape in bulk and I used twill tape for the waist tape because that's what many corset patterns suggest.
I hang mine on hooks on my wall but they can be hung in a closet as well. I wouldn't recommend folding them for long periods of time because it will warp them.
super informative tutorial, thanks!! would using normal flat spring steel in a similat width rather than the hoop steel encased in plastic have any detrimental effects? i can buy spring steel for much cheaper from a site i like using, so i'm curious if there's any major reason not to use it.
So you can use flat spring steel but it doesn't hold gowns well, like it's never been able to hold any of my gowns without warping put of shape. So I recommend investing in the stronger stuff so you don't end up having to remake the hoopskirt in the long run.
Can I also sew some (idk how you call but basically to pieces of the tape together so I can pull the boning thru) and then use plastic boning or fischersmet or how you call it instead of steel boning for the hoop as the sttel boning is way to expensive for me?
Hey, if you use plastic boning it will collapse under the weight of the gown on top of it. I recommend investing in the really good steel boning, make the hoop skirt once and then you won't ever need to make another one again. Otherwise, you will spend money on something that won't work and then still need to spend money on upgrading it.
Me: needs to focus so I can make one for my own Belle ballgown Also me: keeps looking at the belle shirt This is really helpful! I'm wondering if you can use plastic boning instead of wire 🤔 (mine doesn't need to hold quite that much weight 😆)
You can but it won't hold up the weight of a Belle gown. I learned the hard way. The steel is how I'm able to hold up 30+ pounds of skirt, anything less durable will collapse or warp into a Lima bean shape and from my experience it didn't look great in photos.

Yay! I'm so happy!
Lmao love the disney cupcake look! This was really great
thank you! that was my favorite part!
Please I hope you see this I’m super confused on where to put the ribbon on the bags. In front of the marked line or behind it??
Very nice job, bery authentic ! But how long youa re able to wear the hooskirt, corset and all the layers ? It must be totally no comfort.
I often wear them 4-5 hours, take a break and then wear them again for 4-5 hours
what is the purpose of the wider band at the bottom? love your tombstone pattern weights btw

I believe historically the bag was partly so you wouldn't accidentally step through the cage but im not 100% sure about that
@@britanniacreations That's actually a big reason why I like the bag so that's cool to know.

@@CaseyReneeCosplay Thanks a lot! Inner peace restored!
This is great tutorial! Can this hoop skirt be folded and stored away if not used?

@@CaseyReneeCosplay oh okay. Thanks for the reply tho. The video is really nice and helpful:)
Before the blankets, you weighed how much I weigh with normal clothing xD
The blanket addition was just something for grins and giggles
