Thinking about it every now and then when watching bobsled nowadays. It's amazing that John Morgan started his commentating career there and is still one half of IBSF's main commentator duo in today's World Cup races in bobsled and skeleton, forming a fantastic duo with Martin Haven for years now.
@@AlysonMorgan-lv3qdThank you for commenting, Alyson. It is important for thoughtful people to see and understand the dimensions of sports, especially the hearts of athletes. Though not an Olympic athlete, I was always able to walk away from crashes thanks in large part to the engineering and safety advancements in the sport, inspired by the athletes who came before.
Hi I know it’s been year’s since your comment. I just found this site that you committed on. I am the widow ofJim Morgan. The actual truth is, yes it’s a tough run. But in Jim’s case is that he was the last sled down because they were closing the run down after him because of slushy conditions. Even John (brother mentioned this). I’ve been around the bobsled world for years with Jim (Nitro). And understand how the runs conditions make a BIG difference. Jim was a VERY accomplished driver beginning when he was 6. I honestly know that he died with a smile on his face and doing what he loved and was great at.
R.I.P. Jim “Nitro” Morgan. A great bobsled driver and Olympian (1976). I know he is well remembered to this day. I wish that he could have driven in more Olympic and World Bobsled competitions if this didn’t happen. His brother John (Heard in this video as color commentator for this event) who was also a bobsled driver is one of the best bobsled event commentators ever.
They still had those wooden boards along the track before they closed it down a few years ago. Glad the Olympics will be coming back to Cortina and with a new track. RIP Nitro.
Im Nitro’s widow. From what his brother that was announcing the race said, they did not put up shades on the corners, and the sunshine was melting the ice. Making it slushy and they don’t have control in those conditions. He was the last sled down and then they were going to stop the race. Nitro was an excellent driver. He passed with a smile on his face doing what he loved.
I am not sure about showing this video. The late Jonnie Woodall was a friend of mine, and was in the British sled at that race. He told me about it. Utterly terrible. This was a dreadful track; cursed I believe, as a number of lives were lost there. I slid a skeleton WC there in 1991. There was a memorial to Nitro in the cafe above Antelao, which was very sobering. He was a great guy, whom everyone loved, and we live in the shadows of these giants.
@@cuddlemeheywoodu He is and I'm glad for John. For Jim that shouldn't had happen to him since the conditions were getting worse on the course with the wooden boards being exposed due to the warm weather. RIP Jim Morgan.

My brother is on this sled. Very sad day.
Jim was my husband.I know in my heart that he had a smile on his face and passed doing what he loved. I’m so proud of him.

The driver who died James Morgan, his own brother John was one of the event commentators. Couldn't imagine the anguish. RIP Nitro.

Wow that track is dangerous. 1981? Things have come a long long way. So sorry Jim Morgan lost his life.

Jim Morgan's brother John was color commentating for ABC. You can tell by his voice AFTER THE CRASH that was really worried!
