- Here is everything that you need to know about the mysterious Colonel Samuel Flagg that showed up on the hit CBS TV sitcom, "M*A*S*H" from time to time. While some people referred to him as "the wind", I thought the guy was just plain funny!

Was Flagg CIA or CID?
He was CIA - crazy in the army, according to Hawkeye.
Loved Colonel Flagg. He should have been on more. He and Sidney Freedman were always such a joy to watch. RIP to both.
The wind broke his arm
I'm with the CIA. I thought you were with the NSA. No, I tell people that so they think I'm with DIA.

I liked Sydney Freeman too. He was comical in alot of ways.
I agree. They had such dry humor it was hilarious. 😂
I always found Colonel Flagg to be hilarious and wished they used him more.
I generally feel the same way, but I wonder if he would have been less funny if he'd been in more episodes.
Less is more
I loved when they humiliated him over and over again.
Yes he was the best for a laugh.
@@frocat5163 I think that is a sound judgement myself. As much as we love the absurd characters, it takes very little for the absurd to become dull. I think he might have had one one more appearance before overstaying his welcome, but whatever the case, he was definitely worth every minute he was on screen.
I loved Colonial Flagg. Re-watching him never got old.
Played that part brilliant.
Im right with you bra..I loved that character
That's because the actors were always the same age. Recorded imiges don't age, even if the subjects in the photo get old.
I have a picture of myself with 49er Gene Washington taken in 1973.
I'm still a little kid in the picture even though I went and got old in the last nearly 50 years.
I think maryleybedford meant (s)he doesn’t gat tired of watching MASH episodes with Flagg.
@@valerietaylor9615.. I got that part but "Colonial Flagg" kinda stood out but it's obvious they meant "Colonel" so to be grammar n*zi over it would be, well,, as neurotic as Col Flagg lol...
Colonel Flagg was my absolute favorite recurring character. (I loved Sidney, too, but Flagg was outrageously funny. The episode with both of them was awesome.)
I loved Potter's nonchalance regarding Flagg.
Flagg had some fabulous lines written for him and his delivery was unique!
I like Sidney Friedman a lot, too. Liked his world - weary expression. But Flagg was funnier.
Right here shrink!
OH YEAH,, the captain Chandler episode... Captain Chandler was a bombardier who ended up at 4077 because he thought he was Jesus... First flag shows up, saying he wanted Chandler either, and I quote, "up in that b-29 with his finger on the red button",, or sent to Leavenworth... So Hawkeye and Potter decide to call Sidney Friedman, who comes and examines Chandler/ Jesus... I'll save the spoilers lol but, when Friedman comes to the conclusion that Chandler is no longer able to perform his duty, and should be sent home with a section 8 psychiatric discharge,, Flagg starts threatening Friedman in the presence of Hawkeye and BJ and Col Potter... At one point he actually laughs at Flagg,, which wasn't a violation of military protocol by that point since I think Friedman was a colonel by then... Friedman basically closes out his part of the conversation by saying, Flagg, I'd like to talk with you longer, but with your schizophrenia I'd have to charge you double....
@@tomvanriper8084YEAH at first he was threatening Friedman, saying he belonged to left-wing organizations and threatening to have him exposed,, AND "kicked out of the army" at which point Hawkeye and BJ say, which organizations Sydney, I want to join so I can get kicked out and sent home... at which point Flagg gets his brilliant deduction, and says, I see what you're trying to do here, and it isn't going to work ,, we're going to keep you in the army right where Uncle Sam can keep an eye on you, RIGHT HERE shrink, where you can patriotically serve the country that's going to HOUND YOUR EVERY STEP... Flagg makes his grand exit, leaving Potter and BJ and Hawkeye and Sydney standing there bemused and the scene I believe ends with Hawkeye suggesting they get a drink which is the way pretty much every scene with Hawkeye ends...
Hard to believe Colonel Flagg left such a big impression from so few appearances. The character was played brilliantly.
Flagg was so memorable it is hard to believe he was in so few episodes, but that pays tribute to how well he was portrayed.
"Hey close up you're a guy!" "Far away too..."
I once worked on a movie with Ed Winter and during lunch breaks talked with him a few times - he told that the famous MASH scene where he breaks his own arm to stay at the camp got the highest laugh-rating in the entire series.
So cool! Thanks for sharing. 🙂
" is this guy available for kids parties "
"My father touched my shoulder like that once...to this day, he has to wear orthopedic shirts!"
I say this quote about once a week. It is my favorite Flagg quote.
There's many a gold nugget from the man!
@@DesertPackrat I've used it quite a bit myself. His dialogue was so over the top...it was awesome. Props to the writers.
that's the one I think of first.
Must have been so much fun to write for that character.
"Don't play dumb! You're not as good at it as I am!"
"An uncle of mine once touched me like that. To this day he has to wear orthopedic shirts."
-Col. Flagg
I thought it was, "Don't play dumb with me, I'm better at it than you are!" 😂
I believe it was “You might think you’re smart, Friedman, but you’re dumb, you’re really dumb. But you’ve met your match in me”
I'm a 30 year high school teacher, and I've used that line countless times.
That was my favorite. Line from him!
" the wind just broke its leg" episode never gets old. I laugh hysterically everytime knowing what's coming.......
How this guy managed to get through his lines without cracking up shows what a great actor he was
Absolutely!
he did it by watching one hundred hours of the 3 stooges and every time he felt like laughing he jabbed himself with a cattle prod.
Flagg: "You're dumb, very dumb, but you've met your match in me!"
....is that a reference to Tar👣Hole fans???....fellow Wolfpacker here, class of '85....
I think he said that to Maj. Freedman in the episode "Quo Vadis, Captain Chandler?".
I think so, too.
"That's my company clerk. You can say anything in front of him."
"All right, I will. Get out."
He had some of the best lines in the whole show. Every episode with him was a joy. I would have loved another couple episodes with him. I was surprised they didn't bring him back for a cameo in the finale.
"I've got secrets I don't even tell myself".
@@joewhite3609 Frank Burns puts his hand on Flagg's shoulder. "My father touched me like that once. To this day he has to wear orthopedic shirts."
He definitely should have been in the series finale. Playing poker with “ Truman” and “ Mac Arthur”.
Flagg wasn’t neurotic, he was psychotic. Probably a paranoid schizophrenic.
Edgar played his character to perfection. An actor who consistently left the audience wanting more.
I loved his deadpan delivery. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
@@harperstacey9604 In a different universe, I think he could have played Detective Frank Drebin on Police Squad. Similar dry delivery & great comedic timing to Leslie Nielsen.
@@nicholashylton6857 Edward Winter who played Colonel Flagg on mash, had appeared in many TV shows. He was a good comedic and dramatic actor. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
Flagg: Isn't it true you had a torrid relationship with Major Houlihan ? - Frank: No sir - Flagg: You wanna see the film? - Hawkeye: I'll get the popcorn.
Ha! Such great writing!
It figures, Flagg would have films of that.
Flagg was my favorite guest, he had such charisma. Still my favorite on the re- runs
I loved the episode when he beat himself up (breaks phone over his head, charges into a wooden cabinet). That circus-like music playing made it even funnier.
That was excellent.
I listen that music over and over still!
He was the first Fight Clubber! ;)
the black market loves that " white gold "
I think that was in the episode about a medic from another MASH unit who was caught stealing penicillin from the 4077th. At the end of the show, Hawkeye and Trapper were about to remove Flagg’s appendix ( they put something in his coffee to give him stomach cramps.) Flagg said, “ If I get an infection, remember I’ve got plenty of penicillin.” Trapper, “ We’ve got plenty of penicillin.” “ Hawkeye: “ You’ve got plenty of nothin’ .”
Between him and Sidney, they were the best. Sidney: You're a victim too, Flagg. But you're such an unbelievable example of walking fertilizer, it's hard for me to care.
I have quoted this MANY TIMES to people on comment boards who think their PATRIOTISM means they can't be questioned! Sadly so many are so SET in that "REICH-WING MIND SET" they have no sense of IRONY or even HUMOR... I always tell them it's not their FAULT!
Or when Sidney refered to flagg haveing schizophrenia🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@SF-pq3sq I DVR'd all the episodes with Flagg cause they're the best episodes.
One of the best and most memorable characters ever on TV.
I've seen the "AfterMASH" episode with Col. Flagg. He testified at Klinger's trial, who'd been arrested for assaulting a shady real estate agent. When asked by the judge what government agency he worked for, Flagg hinted, "It has initials and we're allowed to carry firearms in our shoes."
Gun in shoes, maybe a predecessor of Max Smart at Control. Oh that was phones not guns
LMAO that’s hilarious.
What, no phones?in shoes, I mean.
I loved it when Klinger assaulted a realtor. I have issues with realtors.
Col Flagg was a tremendous addition to the MASH series. We didn’t see him nearly enough....such a piece of work!! Thanks “Flagg”.
"Burns, you interrupt me again and I'm gonna drop a grenade down your shorts!"
"A couple of Cutie Pies, aren't you?"
Frank deserved a grenade down his shorts. And I liked Hawkeye’s and Trapper’s simpers after Flagg’s “ cutie - pies” line.
Flagg was a brilliant addition to the MASH universe. Edward's deadpan deliver, over the top intensity and absurd paranoia made Flagg one of the most hilarious recurring TV characters ever. Definitely would have liked to see at least one more appearance from him.
The closest Flagg ever got to any sort of warmth or humor or ANY real emotion besides weirdness was when they were I think discussing The disappearance of Margaret and Flagg was saying he wanted to send in a regiment of rangers after bombing the hell out of some place with artillery, and Hawkeye says incredulously, well why don't we just drop the bomb, and Flagg ALMOST smiles and says all patronizingly and I quote,,
"Hey - DON'T try to make friends with me."
Cut to Hawkeye doing a double take...
Colonel Flagg was one of my favorite characters on my favorite show of all time! Each and every one of Edward Winter's appearances was nothing short of comedic genius! Takes a lot of acting talent to play a funny role with such seriousness and downright lunacy. He played the role to perfection and made the character positively and hilariously unforgettable! RIP, Mr. Winter!
Edward Winter should have won an Emmy for his performance on the show. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
Great episode, Dave. Maybe the greatest testament to Edward Winter's huge talent is the fact he took a mere 6-7 episodes in which to create one of the most iconic characters in TV history.
Every night before he goes to bed, Chuck Norris checks under his bed to see if Colonel Flagg is under it.
Yes! Best Chuck Norris joke ever!
I believe it.
I loved every episode Flagg was on. He was perfection in that role.
Halloran/Flagg: Hey, up close your a guy?
Klinger: Far away too!
“If you can’t find scorpions, get two snakes and a rat!” Hawkeye: “Why stop there? Why don’t we just drop an atomic bomb?” Flagg: “Hey, don’t try to make friends with me!”
i thought the reply was "it's a gift for a friend"
@@colleenpell2817 Ah. That's when he asked for a box of scorpions. A dozen, at least.
Love it!
In my humble opinion Ed Winter stole the show every time he appeared as Flagg. He played that part to absolute perfection! I have the entire series of MASH and every time I decide to pull out a DVD and watch another episode, it is always a DVD that has at least one episode that Ed Winter appears in. An out and out professional actor!
Flagg was a brilliantly portrayed character, very funny & all the time a deadpan face! RIP Edward & thanks for the laughs!
I still dream of him getting a spin-off called "Flagg!"
How do we know Flagg wasn't on M*A*S*H more, he WAS a master of disguise. I bet he was, we just didn't notice. 😁😁👍
Good point... 😊😊😊😊😊
I always wondered about that red headed nurse . Her hair always looked loose on her head.

B.J. (to PIERCE) " No, i said he was the moon"
Didn’t the wind break his leg?LOL
Hahah "I'm the wind" and "no home" The writing was phenomenal and his portrayal couldn't have been better, seriously. Nothing phased Flagg. He lived in own little world and nothing and I do mean nothing could enter that world and have ANY affect on him. Very funny character.
Then Potter asked the wind to blow your butt out of my chair.

The lights didn’t go out, that was in “ Rally ‘ Round the Flagg, Boys.” The last ep with Flagg.

"You took a yellow red before a white American which is pretty pinko." - Colonel Flagg
You're even boring in Technicolor. - Hawkeye
I always thought that dialogue could've easily fit in the Gelbart era. Great to hear it in the Winchester period.
Someone to Flagg : "Hey, I know you. You're from Army Intelligence."
Flagg: "I have nothing to do with intelligence."
Yes Flagg wasn't a bright bulb
@@johnfic4751: He might've been bright, but as he explained, nobody could extract information from him because he kept himself in a constant state of utter confusion. Not even a Number 8 would've been successful!
Flagg's answer seems to be from the scene where Major Frank Burns says "I try to avoid things that involve intelligence." This was logical. He wasn't in G-2 (Now S-2) & had no need to know what G-2 was up to.
@@leondillon8723 It is still "G-2" as well as "G-2" and even "J-2."

Ed Winter also appeared as " the bad guy land developer " in the 1986 John Denver christmas movie, The Christmas Gift as Renfield. just think, if Flagg had a son, he would turn to be this guy. I JUST *LOVED* the scene that followed:
Colonel Flagg: You were insanely jealous of her engagement. You were furious at being rejected. You were capable of murder!
Hawkeye: That's right! So you hit her over the head with a blunt instrument.
B.J.: A saxophone.
Hawkeye: Then you hypnotized her and told her she was Johnny Ray.
B.J.: Then you performed plastic surgery on her, made her look like Johnny.
Hawkeye: The rest is obvious. You stuck her in a trunk, you mailed her to Las Vegas, and now she's doing two shows a night at The Sands.
B.J.: Three on Saturdays.
Colonel Flagg: There's only one flaw in that theory.
Hawkeye: Only one?

He's not CIA, he's CIC pretending to be CID.
My daughter absolutely loves that episode. Quintessential Flagg logic. She used to work at the Department of Commerce (DOC) building and joked that she told people that so they'd think she was with the DOD (Department of Defense)!
He’s a CPA.
They were going to stitch it on his head. CIA: Crazy In Army.
You skipped over CIB

Colonel Flag was hilarious. Some of the funniest television you could watch.
Flagg always brought his A material.

Flagg was always a joy to see, and I have to agree with Craig. A final appearance in the series finale would've been the cherry on the sundae.

HAWKEYE: (talking to B.J.) "I told you they were alleged wounds, that's why I gave him allege plasma."
FLAGG: "YOU'RE LUCKY I GOT A SENSE OF HUMOR."
The best short-lived guest star, in my opinion, was Colonal Flagg. He should have visited more often. Hiding in the trash can, and the next soldier walks out of the mess hall and empties his tray right on top of Flagg's head. On and on, he continued to assume the worst on certain people in the military. Funny stuff.!!
Thanks for sharing his memory and his great one-liners.
I remember reading once that the writers didn't want to use him that much because the character was so special and over the top that when he DID appear, it was always a treat. And a final season appearance would have been great. But not in GFA. That episode was perfect.
Flagg: Let me tell you something. I have a complete record on you. I know every move you make, everything there is to know about you, so watch your step, Hunnicut!

A good twist would have been for Hawkeye to challenge Flagg to discover what BJ stood for. If BJ was telling the truth and it didn't stand for anything then Flagg strikes out. If Flagg actually finds valid information, then Hawkeye finally finds out.
“The wind just broke it’s leg”. Look it up. Flagg at his best. My All-Time favorite episode of all the episodes.
One of my favorites as well, Scott!
The best line of the entire series.
Mine too
@Wes McGee That was to fool people who thought he was with the CID.
I love the comments!!! Maybe I’m just getting old but TV went down hill after MASH. The 70s were abysmal on many levels but TV was a way to escape and it shined then. MASH, Rockford, Sanford, All in the family and WKRP was the night cap of the 70’s.. I could go down a long list off really good shows that were fun to watch back in the day. Not like the junk they call entertainment today, which is way we all found RUclips. Cheer to you all.

Every now and then, a TV show will create a character that is so ridiculously over the top that even a couple episodes is enough to remember that character forever, or the entire show actually begins to revolve around that character. Colonel Flagg (MASH), Harry Mudd (Star Trek), Steve Erkle (Family Matters), Cousin It (Adams Family), Harley Quinn (Batman). The list goes on from there. Colonel Flagg was one of those characters that was so outrageous that he took over the entire show when he was on the screen. The actor, Edward Dean Winter, was so good in that role, and so spectacularly cliched as the military spy guy, you had to admire the man's ability to play that part so straight faced without even the slightest crack of a smile. I have to wonder what he was like when he wasn't on camera. Great character, great actor.

Colonel Flagg: "I've uncovered evidence that you operated on a yellow red before a white American which makes you pretty pinko!"
Hawkeye: (small pause) "You're even boring in technicolor"
LOL
Colonel Flagg make appearances with Henry Blake, Raider, klinger, and frank burns and these were the best shows ever. Col Flagg should have been in the show a lot more.
@@pamelacoles5371 He was an awesome character
My favorite
MASH was a excellent show. Didn’t realize Flagg was only in 7 of the programs. Col. Flagg was definitely 1 of my favorites & yes, an appearance in one of the last two shows would have been appreciated.
I would not be at liberty to discuss Col. Flagg...if in fact he did exist.
I can neither confirm nor deny the use of the Malaysian Chest Implosion torture...
😂. Perfect.
@@CheezyDee Good, because there's no such thing.....yet.
@@aznluvr7 is that what you were told?
Watched a hundred hours of The Three Stooges. Every time I felt like smiling, I jabbed myself in the stomach with a cattle prod.
I was thinking of that one
Flagg was great and added some spice once in a while. I think too many more visits would have stolen his thunder. I think Sydney could have used more shows though. Both played their parts very well and were so much fun.
Sydney Friedman was boring, like watching toast get limp and milk. We had enough of him, but we needed more Colonel Flagg.
Sidney wasn’t boring, I liked him a lot. So world - weary, so compassionate. Also witty.
As much as I use to watch that show I still enjoy the re-runs every time they put them on.
He's the kind of guy our government would pin a metal on, but no one would understand why.

Looking forward to this one, such a great character!
*"The Wind Just Broke His Leg"*
Such a great line! I love that entire scene where he tells everyone to close their eyes so that he can slip out without being seen. :)
Drats. I just typed that up top.
@@jdsundstrom he's Batman
That's the line I thought of.
So the Wind wasn’t gone with the wind.
I remember him saying "If it wasn't for war, you wouldn't know what peace was."
Legend has it colonel flagg is still watching over the M*A*S*H compound. He's still there, watching and waiting.
In a garbage can, no doubt.
I love reading his legendary quotes in the comments
I did enjoy Col. Flagg om the show. Yes he should have been in it more.
I agree. I would have liked to have seen him show up at last once each season.
@@jdsundstrom He also showed up on an episode of AfterMASH.
I agree, he was definitely underemployed. I find it very similar in that regard to Howard Morris's Earnest T Bass character on the Andy Griffith Show.
His appearance on “After MASH” was good.
Great information on Col Flagg. He was certainly among, if not the most memorable secondary characters on the show. Best moment "I think the wind just broke his leg" - from Hawkeye after Flagg busted the windows to "disappear".
"If there were more people like him, there'd be less people like him" as Hawkeye once said.
Colonel Flagg was easily my favorite guest character. I’m firmly in the ‘More Flagg’ camp and truly believe that Captain Halloran was just Flagg in disguise.
You did it again Dave, and thanks! Having the complete MASH series on DVD, I watch an episode a night. I loved the ending in the episode "The Abduction of Margaret Houlihan" where Flagg has everyone close their eyes before leaving Col. Potter's office because, like the wind, no one sees him come or go. With all eyes closed, Flagg jumps through the window in Col. Potter's office. You hear the "crash" of the window and then a moan. Hawkeye looks out the window and states, "The wind just broke his leg."
On a side note, I also have the complete collection of Magnum P.I. and it's amazing how many guest stars from MASH have shown up on Magnum as well, including Edward Winter.
Thanks for the kind words, Steve!
i used to watch him come in to mash and snoop around looking for anything, but never finding anything he was looking for. his best was when he did not want anyone see him leave,he said he was the wind and just disappeared
Our family loved his character! Whenever an episode with Col. Flagg was on a rerun, the kids would shout, “It’s a Flagg!” We would all watch the episode. Maybe he could have made a few more appearances, scattered throughout the later episodes. Not too many, just a few more appearances.
