When you said he had pockets for magazines, my brain thought, "For reading on breaks?". 😂 I think this particular release, despite it being basically a repaint in most ways, still holds a lot of value. Although the price point of $99 in my opinion is fair, this is definitely geared towards adult collectors. If it was meant to be geared towards a younger audience, the price point would need to be about half that for sure. Had to laugh at your little Action Force dig... Got Em! All in all, would have loved to have this one as a kid. Would have got a lot of play time for sure.
I still haven't figured out what those pouches are for... im glad it isn't a clear repaint, the extras (blast effects) have been released elsewhere but were a nice addition in the box. I agree with you that most kids would be getting anything at this price point, but my grandson will definitely be playing with it!
