Just bought my sp9 a couple weeks ago, i may snatch one out soon! Looks like a good, simple solution to a persistent problem the surface lineup has had for years now
Incredible, I didn't expect you to release this video so soon! I may start using my surface pro 9 as my gaming PC along side the mini portable GPU you did a video on! My only fear is the loss of battery life my surface pro 9 will get in the long run because of the gaming and the constant charging! THANK YOU FOR CREATING AN EFFICIENT WAY TO DEAL WITH THE DECADE LONG SURFACE PERFORMANCE PROBLEMS BECAUSE OF HEAT!!!
Just ordered one for my SP9! Thanks so much for doing this. Your channel has the BEST Surface Pro info on all of YT. I bought my SP4, SP2017 and now SP9 based on your testing. I have really enjoyed them and consider them my one "indispensable" computer (except for my beloved Steam Deck lol).
I use my SP9 at 100% cpu overnight running chessbase tournaments. This fan looks to be designed really well and would boost my performace. I have a seperate issue with the SP9 where the CPU speed halves when the screen is off no matter what settings I adjust in the power plan. Only solution is to never turn the screen off, not ideal.
Do you mind elaborating on this? I was considering getting the SP9 and I would run it almost 100% of the time with the screen off/cover closed. I use two external monitors as a normal set up. Halving the speed with the screen off would be a deal breaker.
Bought it a few days ago and just received it today, I really like it. I thought it would be quite loud but it's great. Thanks for making this, definitely looking forward to utilizing it.
I would actually buy one but unforunately, living in Australia means putting up w/ high shipping costs for international shipping (yes the shipping costs more than the fan itself :,))
My issue was the internal fan on my old i7 model stopped working. The throttling became insane (under 1 gig) then, even with that throttling eventually the heat would corrupt the screen and cause flickering and green lines. The internal fan costs $7 from Amazon to replace (with an official MS model of the same SKU) However.... Replacing it means taking your SP apart at an engineers level. Prising the screen off with a heat gun, taking out drives and somehow getting the screen back on again (hot glue??) The MS engineer I spoke to from where I bought the SP told me the cost of them doing it was £300 (about $360)..to replace a $7 fan. I made a point of snapping the screen, snapping the keyboard, and destroying the device and dumping in the bin while they watched. I asked them to film it and send it to their MS head office. This was House of Fraser in Birmingham UK. The guy there did indeed film it with my commentary. No bad language, just the facts. I think he still works there. If you are in Birmingham UK pop in and see him. I think his name was Phillip.
Hey I'm here to give it some updates. I got mine last night. I have to say, the improvement of performance is quite VISIBLE and man I can even feel the temptation drop with my bare hands. So that's all good. But there's still an improvement that could be made--the magnet. It might be fine on the typeC version, but I got the usbA version and it just keeps sliding down until it falls on my table. I tried any possible combination of the angle and the alignment, all fail. I have to support the fan by hands every 2 minutes otherwise it's gonna drop. Nonetheless, the product itself is amazing, an improvement of magnetic pad would perfect it. Thanks for the work, it really saves my Surface book 3.
These are so cool, the red ones on the surface remind me of the red brake calipers you see on cars. I just bought two I can see myself using them for a long time!
Pretty awesome. Flawless and intuitive to pop on and off. My only complaint is it's a fair bit louder than I was expecting. (At least the GPD G1 drowns it out, LOL.)
Hello dude, Very interesting find ! I'm super interested. My main concern is scratching the back of my Surface Pro 9. Do you intend maybe to add a small piece of soft fabric (microfiber, cotton, soft rubber or anything else) to the back of the fan ? The claw design makes me concerned too (another risk of scratching my device when inserting/pulling the fan).
I use my surface pro 8 to draw only. I can't see how it would work since i would have my tablet. Somewhat flat only really propped up to about 160-170 degress. Anyone who uses theres for art, we you recommend this?
Quick question...i keep my surface in a case which opens up to allow use of the surface and the back of the surface is covered. should i just remove it? would i get better performance if i dont use my surface cover?
Hey! I'm very interested in your fan. can you tell me a little more about the placement, like why it's so off to the side? I'm on your website, and I'm looking for photos os what the other side looks like (i'm assuming jsut a metal plate)
It is like that to position the business ends of the blower fan right at the center of the upper half of the surface. While the fan has fins across the entire edge, air only really comes out of one side.
Where he has it if you watch a tear down the processor is just to the side of the camera area and his fan opening is right to the side of the hot spot for the processor so his placement is perfect in my opinion.
The USB-C version will only fit where it fits, the usb-a you can choose to a point, but you want the airflow centered across the middle of the TOP half of the device. (Where you see in this video is roughly where you want it.)
I’ll add if you watch the tear down videos the processor is legit right by the blades that stick out of his fan so that’s the hot spot also I feel it’s really hot there when I’m doing a lot of writing with Microsoft one note. So where the placement he has it is best if you want it blowing the hot spot.

@@josher14 i have a sp9 case and im thinking about cutting the plastic off the back so that i can still use the hook in version directly on the SP9. and a little extra so the air is blowing the metal directly not the plastic. i really wanted the case for the bumper edges. its come in handy already since my SP9 fell off the couch 2 nights ago when i set it on a pillow and sat down it slide off onto our hard floor. i dont think id want the extra cord so that what im thinking about doing with the case. havent decided yet tho.
For the usb-c method, no. You could go without, but it will vibrate a bit more without it and it won't feel as secure, but if you only use it in the desk it wouldn't be a problem. I include the shim either way.
@@DarthGengarus it is bluish if you leave the film on, and aluminum / silver if you pull the film off. You could technically paint it whatever color, but I don't have any options
Wow nice. I still have my Surface Pro 3 with Windows 11 on it and it's still working well. Just gets hot when steaming videos. This just might be the answer I'm looking for.

Would be cool to see you compare the performance between the amazon fans and this one.
I ordered mine this morning 😊so excited! I will be using it on my laptop studio 2 and the good old surface book 3.
Great video! It's a pretty good solution to such a niche problem.
I was just wondering what softwares you were using to benchmark the device?

It comes with a metallic sticker plate for the fan to attach to, the fan never makes contact with the surface pro directly

Any way to deliver this to Paris without the insane shipping costs?
