  • As an exhibitor at the 2022 Makers Central event at the Birmingham NEC, I get the opportunity to chat with you and for you to ask questions and see the projects up close.
This update video shows what I have been up to recently and some of the projects that I'm working on this year.
Overall, I'd like to show how it's possible to create bespoke engineering concepts using renewable energy at home, where the CNC mill conversion is purely running on Solar Energy and will be creating the parts for my MGF Electric Vehicle project.
So an environmentally friendly vehicle is being created using renewable energy and all at home in a garage.
Please feel free to ask questions, subscribe to be notified of new content and come and find me at the event.

really cool stuff, the place is looking great! having the power of such a capable CNC mill and a CAD capable PC entirely off grid is just amazing! what a nice setup!
you said something that i've wondered about in the past but never figured out. is it possible to isolate a 12V circuit from a 24V battery bank, without using a step down regulator? it sounded like thats what you're planning to do, but i don't understand the wiring setup that would let you do so.
keen to see how you'll go about it, if you could address that in your video when the time comes i'd really appreciate it.

Hi, yes you can take the 12v off a battery in series of a 24v system. Toys have been doing it for years as a simple example, say you have 3 x 1.5V AA batteries in a battery box in a toy, so you have 4.5V for that toy, some toys tap off of the 1st or 2nd battery to have 1.5V (1st battery positive, 2nd battery negative) or 3V (second battery positive, third battery negative). but you will need to bear in mind that if you take a lot of current from the 1st and/or second battery, these will drain quicker, so it's best to take small loads from these; this is not too much of a problem though if they are on charge. I hope that helps. I've pinned your question to the top so that I remember to include it. Thank you for your question.

Good to see you again, Neil. Looks like you've got your hands full with plenty to keep you off the streets. 👍 Good luck with it all. I do want to see that Z axis completed though, been waiting for it for a while...🤔

Hi Fred, thank you. Yes plenty to do, having a little more time to complete things too. I will be getting the Z-Axis and finishing the Spindle drive before the Makers Central event, so that should be out in the next couple of months. The time-consuming elements are video editing and developing the mills programming. I need to take a look at the mills tapping capability too, I think that's going to be completely different for a home mill. Nice to hear from you again

That's nice Neil, but what about that ol' pool heater?

Hi, I've had to take the old pool heater (plastic pipes) apart at the moment as we are moving and need to renew the wood. I hope to do more videos from August once settled.

Hi Jack, good point, I just popped out into my garage, it's an iroda Solderpro 120, it's an awesome little torch, heat gun, plastic cutting device. Mine was £69.99; there are cheaper versions although I've had mine for many years and it's still going strong, plus it's in a decent hard foam case with heat protection built-in. Here's the link: www.maplin.co.uk/iroda-solderpro-120-30-125w-butane-gas-powered-soldering-iron-kit-0742286981009?ff=157&fp=34838&gclid=Cj0KCQiAxoiQBhCRARIsAPsvo-ywPM3XgVtSXtSYNDUGV5ueisYWRIU2TjNZoWWG2xlby42J_vKG6poaAtl_EALw_wcB
I put the comment on both videos just in case others want to know ;-)
