  • Darning socks is explained in this video using our darning egg which can be used to quickly and easily mend - or darn - your socks. Used to fill the surface that needs mending and for the needle to slide against, a darning egg makes repairing your socks easy!

    Kirby, thank you for posting this. In a series that could easily be accused of being elitist, this one brings you back into the real world, as a guy willing to do what it takes to maintain good clothing instead of throwing the item away. You are bringing some honesty to what has become a world of pretense.

    Kirby, Thank you for taking the time to show me how to repair my socks. My Mom didn't get to pass that on to me before she went to heaven. I did inherit her sewing stuff including a couple darning eggs. Now I know how to use one!
    I did repair my own uniforms in the Army, but have let my wife have such duties these last 25 years. She always just threw my socks away. I shall repair them from now on!

    I hand knit socks. I knit a nice pair made of silk and cashmere. But one of them got a hole in the heal. After all the time it took to knit them there was no way I was going to toss them. This was very helpful! Thank you!

    I love this Kirby, good old fashioned thrift! The sign of a real gentleman as a gentleman knows the value of a dollar.

      I learned how to sew in college and really appreciate having this skill now! Yes - I completely agree. Knowing the value of a dollar is important, and taking care of the things we own. I've got countless pairs of perfectly-wearable socks that would have been thrown out if it weren't for a little mending... and I find that I actually wear these socks with price and satisfaction knowing that I was able to take care of them.

    Thanks for the video great skill to learn. Although I am torn between keeping socks sometimes I just have a good pair with a color and design that is difficult to find and I just don't want to throw away. This helps. Don't pay attention to all those negative reviews. I am always open to learning something new even if I might not use it.

    If you want to reinforce your sock. You should use Swiss darning or duplicate stitch to go over the worn area before it wears a hole. Basically and patches that are a little transparent can be reinforced

    Thanks for the good technique/tips in this video - I've been darning my socks for years after my neighbor gave me her old darning egg.When you find a pair that wear well (and match certain difficult trousers) I think it's worth a little effort to keep them in service. BTW - I think the term you were searching for was "baseball stitch". Cheers!

    I darned socks when I was a child and what you did is not darning. It is sewing. Darning is replicating a weave.

    • @kirbyallison
      @kirbyallison  6 лет назад +9

      Kiernan - you're totally correct. I don't think it would be possible to technically "darn" a dress sock because the weave is so fine. This is more "mending" than "darning." But we use a darning egg and it is what I felt best described the process.

      colin macdonald I never have. Any particular reason? I’m technically mending, not darning, which would imply essential re-weaving, near impossible on such a fine sock.

  • @mdarmocida
    @mdarmocida 7 лет назад +22

    You didn't darn that sock, you sewed it. That's why there is bunching, which is the most annoying thing regardless of where it is. I would rather trash the sock than to wear a sock with a bunched node in it. Sewing a sock is to close up the hole. Darning a sock, which requires darning thread, fills the hole and that eliminates bunching. The darning egg is great to use regardless, but please don't call sewing darning, and please, if you're going to sell a darning egg, then show people how to darn, which is the quality way to mend a sock. BTW, most people find it easier to darn a sock with a darning mushroom than a darning egg.

    • @kirbyallison
      @kirbyallison  7 лет назад +2

      Mike A Thanks, Mike! Average person isn't going to be able to darn a dress sock because the knit is too fine. I've tried - it's impossible! This does the trick and I've never had any trouble with bunching. If you know any tricks, please send them! Always looking to improve.

    • @Alebtong1
      @Alebtong1 7 лет назад +1

      He does mention that you do not need to use the darning egg. It is still a good skill to learn

    • @mdarmocida
      @mdarmocida 7 лет назад +2

      Yeah. Guess I should have re-worded that to "I find bunching the most annoying thing, regardless of where it is." Although, you even state in your video that there will some bunching. I disagree about the average guy not being able to darn a sock though. In my opinion, the sewing technique you showed was quite elaborate. Darning isn't too much different and provides far superior results. Regardless, if people are happy with a sewed sock, then its still better than throwing it out prematurely.

    • @kirbyallison
      @kirbyallison  7 лет назад +3

      Mike A Would love for you to email me a photograph of a properly darned dress sock. Proper darning is like re-weaving. I have found it practically impossible to achieve well on a dress sock because the knit is so fine. A satisfactory, effective result would be impossible to achieve. This method, although technically crude, has allowed me to continue wearing an otherwise perfectly fine dress socks for years.
      I would never darn/mend at the heel because, yes, the bunching would create discomfort. But at the toe, I've never noticed!

      Long ago (through the 1970's) even folks of moderate means could buy nice wool sweaters and socks. Over time, with heavy use, a worn spot or hole would appear. Rather than tossing a nice sweater or pair of heavy wool socks, most people would darn that small area and continue to use the garment for several years. There were shops where people would take very expensive woolen jackets and blazers to have a skilled person "reweave" a small hole or weak area in the fabric and the repair was almost invisible. Cheap synthetic fabrics aren't worth the money paid for them to begin with much less the few minutes it would take to repair them.

    It's an intetesing idea "darning" socks. In days gone by it would have been done because clothing in general was expensive and preserving hand made items was important. These days however? I'm less sure. If a pair of fine socks has got to the point of having a hole in them, replace them. Walking around in patched up clothes leaves you looking like prince Charles' ancient John Lobbs. In my opinion it makes the wearer look like a cheapskate :)

    • @kirbyallison
      @kirbyallison  7 лет назад +11

      Shrink1061 I beg to differ. If you're spending $45 on a pair of socks, five minutes to mend a hole is hardly being cheap. And in this day of throw-away mass consumerism, I find it pleasantly satisfying to be thrifty where possible.
      Perhaps you're not spending enough money on your socks! 😂😉

      Shrink1061 this is what we have been told by mainstream consumerism, where any person who does not consume brand new is considered cheap. I'd even go further than our host: even on a 10$ sock, it makes sense to darn it, just because it's foolish to create more trash and promote this wasteful economy.
      That from a random guy who never darned a sock in his life, and will as of now. ;)
