The 45 RPM "Corvair Baby" and its flip side, "My SS 396" were produced as GM radio promo spots and distributed to dealer's advertising arms.....such as my Dad's advertising agency that had the local Chevrolet account. They declined to use the radio spots so I got the 45! And no one else had it so my friends could only hear it off my record player! So cool! We played both songs a gazillion times.
We had a copy, my uncle worked at a dealership. I would put the arm back so the 45 would keep playing. My older sisters hid the 45, I found years later in a cabinet at my parent's.
I have owned four Corvairs. A 1962 Monza, a 1963 Monza, a 1964 Spyder convertible, and my favorite ─ a '65 Corsa convertible. It had the 180-horsepower turbocharged engine, and LOVED to throw fan belts. I joined the Chicago Corvair Enthusiasts and learned that the secret was to use only a genuine Chevy fan belt. That was the cure. I upgraded my '65 to 14-inch chrome reverse wheels and D70 x 14 red line tires, which just barely fit. Tuning that turbocharged engine was something that few mechanics could do properly. When it WAS properly tuned, it was a ton of fun, and the handling was superb. One common Corvair problem was oil leaking past the O-rings. Although Nader did do a world of damage to the car's reputation, it was the Camaro which really did in the Corvair. Chevy killed both the turbocharged and the four-carburetor engines for 1967. That latter engine was later reinstated, but not the turbo engine. Chevy quit promoting the car altogether and for 1969 [its last year] didn't even hand out sales brochures for it. Each dealer received ONE Corvair brochure, and only when a potential customer ASKED was the brochure shown to him.
I autocrossed and street raced a highly modified 64 Corvair that surprised the V8s in a stoplight to stoplight race and then went legit with a 65 cloned to be a Yenko Stinger in SCCA D Production. Cars were fun then.
Nobody believes me when I mention this song. They think I'm making it up because I'm such a Corvair fanatic. I just wish gottogosome had access to more of these great pictures to go with the song instead of just reusing the same half dozen or so repeatedly. Some day someone will dig up actual concert film of this historic recording. I have several copies on vinyl, but I'd love to get it on CD too. (I had a 220+ h.p. '66 Monza coupe that would walk all over 5.0 Mustangs!)
corvairjim1 I have a dj friend that collects jukeboxes... I had never heard this song until he told me about it. I have since passed this video on to another friend that owns a really nice '63 model!
I have a 66 Monza Sport Sedan, Artesian Turquoise, factory A/C, aqua interior, 110 hp, PG. Drive it every day, my favorite car I've owned, with the exception of the 69 monza coupe that got totalled last summer...
I have 3 copies of the 45 of this song, with the flip side, "My SS 396," but they are so worn out from playing them, they are impossible to listen to. Thanks for posting this. My dad bought a '67 Bel Aire, which I later bought from him as my first car. He got 3 of these 45's from the dealer then.
Until you actually own one....you'll never understand. The Corvair is just about as much fun as you can have in a car with your clothes on. No kidding. They aren't necessarily fast and they're not the fanciest....but once you get bit...you won't want just one.
Both SS396 and this piece of nothing compare at all to The Beach Boys car songs. Really shoddy composition. They don't sound authentic at all. But I LOVE PR&R when they stick to what they do best.
HA HA you be NUTSO. This is fantastic those jangling guitars hot lead guitar break and killer vocals. Sure beats INDIAN RESERVATION.. BTW Brian Wilson co-wrote your piece of nothing song.
@@carlrudd1858 OK...I love the Raiders. saw them in early 66 , Lindsay was still playing sax on a couple numbers. Drake was still in the band but left soon after for army reserve duty. They were so great live back then.

I have a '65 Monza with a 140. Love that car!
Never too old to hear something new😊
I have my Corvair since 1983.
My dad was a Chevy salesman way back when, and he brought this 45 home, one for each of us 5 kids. The flip side was SS 396.
Mine too

my one copy is worn to the bone.
I still have my 45 of it
My first car was a 60 bell-tel green 4 door. Loved that ride.
My mother had a red convertible Corvair with white top in the early 70's. She didn't drive it much, it usually sat in the garage broken down.
This song and SS396 were produced for GM by Columbia Music.
record producer was Terry Melcher (son of Doris Day)
1:00 great solo guitar riff
god i cant wait till i finish my truck so i can get one of these sexy beasts.

@@recordguy4321 I have SS396 on the Columbia 7" EP if it makes you feel better LOL
Unsafe at any speed (according to Ralph Nader).
same principal applies to Mr. Nader
Ralph used the Corvair as a platform for fame in 1972 A&M University and US Gover(1966) proved all of Nader"s claims wrong
Fuck Nader !
Try playing it at 33 rpm!😊
screw that wind bag
