  • At the foot of Oegosan Mountain in Onyang-eup, Ulju-gun, there is a village where stubborn pottery craftsmen live. Craftsman Heo Jin-gyu started making pottery at the age of 15 and has continued the tradition for 40 years. Even his parents' dissuasion could not break his stubbornness. Artisan Heo Jin-gyu is currently working on making pottery with the colors of Ulju using clay collected from the soil of Ulju. “Soil learns until it dies. I can't learn everything until I die, so I go up there and my seniors are already there. “You have to go there and learn again.” Mr. Heo Jin-gyu visited another workshop to give a gift of 'Ongyeom', which is made by putting salt in an earthenware pot and baking it. In the workshop of master Bae Young-hwa, a neighboring resident, the sound of the potter's wheel turning has been constant for over 60 years. Pottery craftsmen gathered in one place on an early summer evening. Charcoal-grilled pork belly seasoned with pottery salt and a glass of makgeolli in a home-made earthenware jug will wash away the fatigue of the arduous spinning wheel. Let’s follow the smoke rising from Oegosan’s pottery village. #Korea Travel #In Summer #Ulju #Ongyeonggi #Living in a remote mountain #Ulju-gun Onyang-eup #Ongyi Village #Pottersmith #Ongyeom #Earthenware jug #Charcoal-grilled pork belly #A glass of makgeolli #Spinning wheel #Oegomountain
