This song reminds of my daughter who died unexpectedly at age of 14, 3 years ago. It most often makes me cry. She had pale blue eyes, too. And purple hair just before she died. I think about her many times every day and it feels like I will never heal. I don't suppose I will, I will just learn to live with it. But I still have to deal with that pit of the stomach feeling, just as though she has just died all over again.
Chris, she's been hanging out with you, have you not noticed? When you think about her, she's there, and sometimes she's there with you when your not thinking about her. So enjoy her beautiful spirit now. Just a different experience- same Love.
And I'm 17 listening the same song you heard when you where young. Strange, isn't it ? Loving this version the most too. This music will always be heard.. I hope :)
In 2018, I had just gotten off a plane from Los Angeles to Paris. I had nothing in my apartment to eat or drink so, I walked down a few blocks to the Franprix market on Caulincourt in Montmartre. I walked inside the store and Pale Blue Eyes was playing over the piped in radio. I just sat down on a ledge in the store and sang along...strangers walked by me, smiled and continued their shopping. I was so happy to be back in my beautiful Paris, I wanted to cry when I heard this song....it was just one of those perfect moments in Life...Thanks, Lou.

This morning I've been thinking about what makes Velvet Underground songs so great is how they have a moment that transcends space and time that recontextualizes the whole song. We can all agree "Pale Blue Eyes" is one of the most tender songs ever written. But it's the way Lou Reed sings "but it's truly truly a sin" that let's you know there's something real about the song. It's a moment that's so overwhelmingly vulnerable and personal that it's a little uncomfortable. When we think of the songs of the 50s and 60s, there's a lot of heartbreak and love and longing. Most if not all of it feels superficial on some level. You always feel safe knowing it's just a song. It's lyrics put to music and it evokes the themes that it should. Well done. But a song like "Pale Blue Eyes" feels like it's a part of someone's life, an experience somehow made into art in a strange and bending form. There's no distance between the performance and the truth.
I’m here because David Bowie said the bands like the Velvet Underground invented modern music. I think he’s right. Hard to believe this was released in 1969. It’s sounds incredibly modern.

After the breakup with my boyfriend, I was depressed for a long time. I finally decided to move to a different city. On the flight, I found this song and it was on loop for the whole flight. This song always brings me nostalgia about the time we were together. I still remember his gaze with was always filled with so much tenderness and love. Sorry but she does not give the vibe that Lou Reed does. Her main genre is samba and it creeps into her version taking away the solemnity that the song invokes. I live in Brazil and familiar with her music and that of her collaborations with Gilberto Gil who I saw in Sete Lagoas years ago. If you like Marisa Monte then listen to her and Gilberto's Life Gods.
This song was both the last truly vulnerable and tender moment of being someone's blue eyed fuck-up and the earliest memory I retain of when my mom used to sing to me when I was little. My parents kept telling me I loved velvet underground when I was a child but I couldn't remember it at all, and I finally got around to tracking em down. First song on the playlist, and I gotta say this makes me feel relaxed, calm, and happy. This song is beautiful
Another classic and timeless piece of music art perfectly performed and done here by Velvet Underground an incredible band created always great songs and made good music for all of us out there to listening and enjoying their great work of music art.......!!!!!!!!!
This song makes me want to cry. It's so nostalgic and comforting and it'll be a very special song for me for my whole life.
My Parents were also Gen Xers who listened to The Velvet Underground a lot,My Dad actively hates Rush and so does my Uncle lol. They like The Beatles too which is mildly cringe but whatever. My Dad has a pretty impressive record collection. He listened to Funkadelic a lot too and Santana both of which I enjoy. It's funny the way family tends to shape what music you listen to etc.
This is a prime example of the incredible range that Lou and the Velvets were capable of. Pure lyrical and melodic genius. Where was the Nobel Committee in 1968? Lou should have gotten the Nobel first.
College, seven years ago. This was the first Velvet Underground song I ever heard, and I immediately spent a chunk of my meager pay for the week on their discography. I still feel passionate love for their music, really unique and with such outstanding personality.
That's because all Indie Rock,Most Punk, and huge subsections of Metal are either directly or indirectly inspired by The Velvet Underground. The Velvet Underground are more important than The Stones or The Beatles or any of that shit except for maybe Cream.
have you listened to their first album (The Velvet Underground & Nico)? a few different styles on there & some of it sounds so up-to-date you'd never know it was recorded in 1966....makes me wonder why people listened to some of the stuff they did back then, but there you go.....
Pale Blue Eyes is from their third album. Nico and John Cale had left the band after their second album White Light White Heat. That photo was taken before the song was recorded.
there's nothing more satisfying than finding a song that describes what you're currently going through. makes it a lot less confusing. if you see this comment know that i hope we can still love each other even in our strange new friendship
During this quarantine sometimes my family has made me feel so happy, sometimes feel so sad but most of the time MAD. I hope someday in future those days would be old dark memories.
Mental illness is no joke. I’ve been fighting anxiety, depression and OCD for my whole life. I’m only 20, its such a struggle. But I’m fighting so hard everyday just like I always have done. If you’re reading this and you’re struggling, I want you to know you are not alone and I believe in you.
ღ Love this photo of John, Lou, Sterling, Nico and Moe ღ They had no idea what their musical and societal impact would be. Will always love you, beautiful souls.
Sometimes feeling lonely is ok. I mean if you can celebrate happiness, why not sadness. Have you ever went out on a midnight? sat on a deserted street? Felt the air? Looked up at the stars? I have. Perfect time to light up a cigarette. Isn't it? Just feel this dark sacred night. The night, everyone's afraid of. Feel this moment. Celebrate this sadness 💔.
i've never heard a song with so much melancholy and emotion before. I can feel his pain and it's so beautiful in the context of this melody. it's ironic how such a painful feeling can turn into something so wonderful as this
I used to listen this song 5 years ago.. then I don't know I lost touch. I only could remember the melody and forgot the lyrics couldn’t do ven remember a single line. I tried to play the melody on the guitar and tried Shazam to search..but it couldn't find I was sad. I'll tell how I found it. I searched top 100 band of 50s, 60s, 70s and looked every band name till my bell rang and it did. The Velvet Underground... I am so happy.. this is the happiest moment in months for me. I finally found it. To all the people who are reading this comment must think I am weird.. I guess so haha.
This record stops you, makes think, reflect, reminiss, sad and happy. Im sure there is other emotions also. But theyre the ones I feel. Sublime this song is, it really is.
Ok. Listening to this will make me cry. But it is brilliant. Lou my first ever superstar live show and retrospective Nico. All in awe RIP. you were all magnificent. A medicinal warm musical balm . I miss xxx
“I’ve always found that song a bit sad. Like I’m losing something.” Someone I know said that to me once when the subject of this song came up. The stark truth of it has haunted me ever since, as has this song.
Finally decided to listen to the lyrics and I just started crying my eyes out When you fall in love with someone you truly believe they're the most perfect person and that it's all downhill if they don't care about you too
I am here because I have liked the Velvet Underground and Lou Reed for decades. It is obviously quite unusual to choose to listen to a great song without the direction of an outside source, but finding this greatness is all that matters.
Not really, I love King Crimson but I've never watched Jojo. I was thinking of this song so I decided to listen to it. Great song by the Velvets even after Cale left. Their second album is a magnum opus in my Life.
the level of creativity in 60's/70's music ! I listen to new stuff but nothing can come close. This was an area that is no longer possible to replicate.
Sometimes you just gotta put this song on and let it wash over you. It doesn't wash away the sadness, it just kind of cleans it, smooths it out a bit. The key, if you ask me, isn't figuring out how to get rid of depression. It's just figuring out how to coexist with it. It's like a wild animal living in your closet. Just keep it fed and it won't break out and eat you alive. And give it a good scrub once in a while.
There are ways now of meeting and soothing that wild animal and coming to love it and care for it: recent advances in therapy such as AEDP and IFS. A therapist called Tori Olds is a good source of info on this on RUclips.
"if I could make the world as pure and strange as what I see, I'd put you in the mirror I put in front of me" it has been a hobby of mine, for the past however many years since I first heard this song, to contemplate the meaning of this line. It seems to mean different things to me at different times. But goddam if it isn't one of the most beautiful lines of poetry ever written

This song is really amazing. The best love song of my favorite group. The vision of a poet to describe the feelings of unrequired love, using a perfect combination of lyrics and music. The same thing goes for reciprocal love: sometimes make us feel so happy, sometimes so sad. I am not sure if there are poets in the history of rock with the same humanity as Leu Reed.
PALE BLUE EYES Sometimes I feel so happy sometimes I feel so sad Sometimes I feel so happy but mostly you just make me mad Baby, you just make me mad Linger on your pale blue eyes Linger on your pale blue eyes Thought of you as my mountain top thought of you as my peak Thought of you as everything I’ve had but couldn’t keep I’ve had but couldn’t keep Linger on your pale blue eyes Linger on your pale blue eyes If I could make the world as pure and strange as what I see I’d put you in a mirror I put in front of me I put in front of me Linger on your pale blue eyes Linger on your pale blue eyes Skip a life completely stuff it in a cup She said money is like us in time it lies but can’t stand up Down for you is up Linger on your pale blue eyes Linger on your pale blue eyes It was good what we did yesterday and I’d do it once again The fact that you are married only proves you’re my best friend But it’s truly, truly a sin Linger on your pale blue eyes Linger on your pale blue eyes Traduzione italiana: OCCHI DI UN PALLIDO AZZURRO Qualche volta mi sento così felice qualche volta mi sento così triste qualche volta mi sento così felice ma di solito mi fai impazzire tesoro mi fai proprio impazzire Mi soffermo sui tuoi occhi azzurro pallido mi soffermo sui tuoi occhi azzurro pallido Pensavo a te come la cima del la mia montagna pensavo a te come la mia vetta pensavo a te come tutto quello che ho avuto ma non sono riuscito a tenere che ho avuto ma non sono riuscito a tenere Mi soffermo sui tuoi occhi azzurro pallido mi soffermo sui tuoi occhi azzurro pallido Se potessi rendere il mondo puro e strano come lo vedo io ti metterei nello specchio davanti a me ti metterei davanti a me Mi soffermo sui tuoi occhi azzurro pallido mi soffermo sui tuoi occhi azzurro pallido Saltare una vita completamente ficcarla in una tazza mi ha detto che col tempo i soldi somigliano a noi mente ma non sta più in piedi giù per te è uguale a su Mi soffermo sui tuoi occhi azzurro pallido indugio sui tuoi occhi azzurro pallido E’ stato bello ciò che abbiamo fatto ieri e lo rifarei un’altra volta il fatto che sei sposata prova solo che sei la mia migliore amica ma è davvero, davvero un peccato Mi soffermo sui tuoi occhi azzurro pallido indugio sui tuoi occhi azzurro pallido
"I’d put you in a mirror I put in front of me I put in front of me" "ti metterei nello specchio davanti a me ti metterei davanti a me" It was only when I read your translation that I really thought about what those words meant. Thanks.

This is the sound of being young and believing everything you like is right and true (i.e. confidence)......as opposed to the nagging bloody doubt and uncertainty of the years after.
I am so happy to hear Lou Reed sing this amazing song.before he left this world. And I am also very happy to have my heart broken by Sterling's playing before he left this world. Greetings and Peace to All. Hope and Healing to those in pain.
Pale Blue Eyes is also my favorite Velvet Underground ballad. I'm 72 and still a music fanatic. Never saw the Velvet but did see Lou Reed in his later years. I spent my younger years hitchhiking and hopping fright trains around the US and Canada. And when in Germany, I hitchhiked to a small Italian village south of Naples. I've also been to the two largest outdoor concerts in America, Woodstock and the Summer Jam concert in Watkins Glen, New York that featured The Allman Brothers Band, The Band and the Grateful Dead. And at Rhode Island's Newport Folk Festival I saw Bob Dylan's legendary performance with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. The appearance where Dylan got booed for going electric. I'm really just scratching the surface here. So yeah, I miss those days and all the music of the sixties and early seventies. But I'm also happy that the internet now brings the sounds and pictures of my era to today's young listening audience. PS: My musical emphasis these days lies with J-Rock, music from Japan. My favourite band is One OK Rock. I also like Radwimps. Since I'm mellowing these days I like those of you in your sixties and seventies to check out OOR. Especially the ballads. Taka, the singer and song writer, has to be the greatest rock vocalist that I ever heard! And you know how long I've been around.
@Jamie Thx for the reply. Check your RUclips Channel. I left a comment in the Discussion link. 'Twas 2long to add here. Btw, your playlists are awesome! The Smiths, and ltr Morrissey, are favorites of mine. I definitely will listen to your lists.
You've got experiences that a whole lot of people would enjoy reading about. I can tell that just from the brief words in your commentary. It's plain to see you are quite literate as well. Most people couldn't or wouldn't have done the things you have done even though they might have secretly wanted to. If you chronicalized some of those earlier days in your life and put it on paper or cyber-electronically, I'll bet you'd really have something good. People love to live vicariously thru others because it gives their own life more meaning. I know what I'm talking about here, and you can call it a "hunch" or whatever, but I urge you to at least think about what I've said. Jack Kerouac needed a little prodding himself and wrote a dandy little book, "On the Road". I rest my case.....
I'm 53 hearing this for the 1st time ever. So nice. I guess i missed it, too much crap radio over the years :D Too much music out there to hear it all - must say this is the good thing about internet , i knew so little as a kid in the 70's
64 and I hear you loud and clear. I heard the music, but somehow missed much of the meaning. Too bad youth is wasted on the young, course you only feel that way when you are old! No regrets it's been a long strange trip but I wouldn't change a thing.
I'm 53 as well and I hope I never stop learning about, discovering and experiencing this world and what us humans have to offer. I'm sure in the 8 months since your post you've discovered much more music, etc. The VU are one of those bands that paved the way for so many others. I grew up in the SF Bay Area and I never heard The Velvet Underground or The Stooges on any of the AOR stations. I moved to LA and got into punk and other alternative music, but was clueless about the bands that started it all. I pretended that I knew but that didn't really work:-/ “If you hide your ignorance, no one will hit you and you'll never learn.” ― Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451 I learned the hard way. Thanks for being real and the willingness to share your experience and lack of experience.
Funny, I'm 38 and this has been one of my favorite songs since 2002. I don't think age has anything to do with it. It's just fate when music comes into your life :)
They just about never played Velvet Underground on the radio, just a couple of Lou's live solo versions. I was lucky enough to come across White Light/White Heat album in a used record store in high school and figured I'd give it a shot. I became hooked and had to get all the Velvet albums, but actually missed this one. I too didn't know this existed 'til much later, now I see it's one of their best. So much old music I've found on youtube that I never knew existed. All these lost things that are far better than anything being done today.
I've heard some songs that could pass as my sad song but after hearing this I swear it accounts for bad relationships, loss of my sister when i was 19 my nephew. If you can't cry this will bring those tears out and help to ease the pain

My Dad has a pretty impressive record collection. He listened to Funkadelic a lot too and Santana both of which I enjoy. It's funny the way family tends to shape what music you listen to etc.
I have blue eyes and aslo have lived hard. your descriptive touches my soul. Look up not down.
makes me lose a punch on my man card every single time i hear it
Life has many twists and turns, and unforeseen situations. This beautiful, gut wrenching, song hits that mark. Thanks, Lou.
One of the all time best, beautiful and chilled song
😮
This is a prime example of the incredible range that Lou and the Velvets were capable of. Pure lyrical and melodic genius. Where was the Nobel Committee in 1968? Lou should have gotten the Nobel first.
How was this song not a hit? This is one of the most beautiful songs I have heard !
tbf it is pretty popular, it's their most streamed song on spotify
@@rebiyon5645 It was released almost 50 years before Spotify. That’s when it wasn’t a hit.
College, seven years ago. This was the first Velvet Underground song I ever heard, and I immediately spent a chunk of my meager pay for the week on their discography. I still feel passionate love for their music, really unique and with such outstanding personality.
2021 and still hits like it was written yesterday
👍👍👍❤️❤️🇨🇭
That's because all Indie Rock,Most Punk, and huge subsections of Metal are either directly or indirectly inspired by The Velvet Underground. The Velvet Underground are more important than The Stones or The Beatles or any of that shit except for maybe Cream.
@@WocklessGamingforAnimeMoms They were all very influential

I'm not even going to lie, my college librarian told me to listen to this and I cannot turn it off!!! It is beyond the best song I have ever heard...
have you listened to their first album (The Velvet Underground & Nico)? a few different styles on there & some of it sounds so up-to-date you'd never know it was recorded in 1966....makes me wonder why people listened to some of the stuff they did back then, but there you go.....
Your college librarian is a brilliant man/woman. Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground are really great aren't they?
Lou Reed wrote great songs from his heart.
This song feels like a warm hug
It is...off herion
Pale Blue Eyes is from their third album. Nico and John Cale had left the band after their second album White Light White Heat. That photo was taken before the song was recorded.
Nico wasn't on White Light. After their debut, VU left Andy Warhol and his place. Then Verve put out White Light
there's nothing more satisfying than finding a song that describes what you're currently going through. makes it a lot less confusing. if you see this comment know that i hope we can still love each other even in our strange new friendship

This song brings me back to being 13-14, incredibly angsty and lonely. But it’s beautiful. Made my eyes tear up and nose burn.

“I’ve always found that song a bit sad. Like I’m losing something.” Someone I know said that to me once when the subject of this song came up. The stark truth of it has haunted me ever since, as has this song.

When you fall in love with someone you truly believe they're the most perfect person and that it's all downhill if they don't care about you too
I am here because I have liked the Velvet Underground and Lou Reed for decades.
I can't believe so many people give a shit about why you decided to listen to this song.
the level of creativity in 60's/70's music ! I listen to new stuff but nothing can come close. This was an area that is no longer possible to replicate.
This was the song that relaxed my guinea pig when I washed him. My little pale blue eyes. I miss him and didnt't listen to this song untill now.

R.I.P Anthony Bourdain. One of your favorite songs.

Anthony Bourdain could pass for Lou Reed's brother they look so much alike
He was to food media and culture, What Lou Reed was to music. All my heroes are dead.

Timeless, timeless. What else can I say? I'm still sitting in my front room on Sunday afternoon listening to John Peel when I hear this xxxx
Yes, songs transport us back in time. Very emotional.
What a great comment
Agreed@@erichennessey3199
There are ways now of meeting and soothing that wild animal and coming to love it and care for it: recent advances in therapy such as AEDP and IFS. A therapist called Tori Olds is a good source of info on this on RUclips.

PALE BLUE EYES
Sometimes I feel so happy
sometimes I feel so sad
Sometimes I feel so happy
but mostly you just make me mad
Baby, you just make me mad
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Thought of you as my mountain top
thought of you as my peak
Thought of you as everything
I’ve had but couldn’t keep
I’ve had but couldn’t keep
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Linger on your pale blue eyes
If I could make the world as pure
and strange as what I see
I’d put you in a mirror
I put in front of me
I put in front of me
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Skip a life completely
stuff it in a cup
She said money
is like us in time
it lies but can’t stand up
Down for you is up
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Linger on your pale blue eyes
It was good what we did yesterday
and I’d do it once again
The fact that you are married
only proves you’re my best friend
But it’s truly, truly a sin
Linger on your pale blue eyes
Linger on your pale blue eyes

pensavo a te come la mia vetta
pensavo a te come tutto
ti metterei nello specchio
davanti a me
ti metterei davanti a me
Mi soffermo sui tuoi occhi azzurro pallido
mi soffermo sui tuoi occhi azzurro pallido
Saltare una vita completamente
ficcarla in una tazza
mi ha detto che col tempo
i soldi somigliano a noi
mente ma non sta più in piedi
giù per te è uguale a su
Mi soffermo sui tuoi occhi azzurro pallido
indugio sui tuoi occhi azzurro pallido
indugio sui tuoi occhi azzurro pallido
"I’d put you in a mirror
I put in front of me
I put in front of me"
"ti metterei nello specchio
davanti a me
ti metterei davanti a me"

This thread is why I love RUclips

Respect !
I still miss Lou. Thank goodness we still have his words and music.
I'm 53 hearing this for the 1st time ever. So nice.
I guess i missed it, too much crap radio over the years :D
Too much music out there to hear it all - must say this is the good thing about internet , i knew so little as a kid in the 70's
Don't sweat it. Trying to hear what was what back then was almost impossible to begin with.
I pretended that I knew but that didn't really work:-/
“If you hide your ignorance, no one will hit you and you'll never learn.”

I learned the hard way.
