The litter boxes you use you put hay in there. That they eat ,why on earth would you put hay that they eat in a litter box ,they pee on it and then eat it ,,isn’t a hay rack better, eating where you pee sounds really discussing,
You asked a very good question! We let the piggies roam freely in the sunroom. To do so, they have to be potty-trained somehow. We observed them for the first two years and followed their habits. Piggies like to eat hay and pee/poo while enjoying eating. Sometimes, they even pee on the hay to reduce dust to avoid breathing tube congestion. If you are interested, I used EP26 and EP28 to explain how guinea pigs 'engineer' hay by cutting and leaving the stem shell leftovers to become a healthy floor for their feet. The leftover hay they don't want to eat can become an airy, soft floor for their almost claw-like feet. A dry floor can effectively avoid bumblefoot (a severe disease)for guinea pigs. Also, when piggies poo in the hay, the leftover hay can help preserve the poo dry for a few days (EP57). Piggies also like to store their first-round poo in the hay. Piggies eat their first round poo to gain essential nutrients (EP35). Hay is a fantastic thing! Our piggies teach us that a hay floor has a lot of benefits for them. Of course, a hay rack is still good. A hay rack can help you use hay more efficiently. In my case, I use hay for feeding and also for flooring for the piggies. I believe people can raise piggies differently as long as they are healthy and happy! Thank you for commenting! 🙏🙂
