ISO 8583 is a messaging protocol for card related financial transactions. After searching all over for a comprehensive course on the subject and finding none, I decided to release all I’ve learnt about it, from the basic down to implementation. This is the introductory section.

This series is probably what I needed to get an in depth knowledge of the power point I was given to study. Thank you. There's a little mix up in my head, what do the visacard and mastercard stand as, are they card networks or did I miss something?

You're right. VISA, Mastercard, America Express or Discovery are companies that provide the networks for processing payment via card transactions, they are not involved in individual transactions or payments. The issuer and acquirer handles any given transaction. I hope that helps!
