In the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition, Tetris was the game to beat. The winner, Thor Aackerlund, is still seen by many as the best to have ever played. Today’s Classic Tetris tournaments are played on that same version of Nintendo Tetris, using original NES game systems, controllers, and Tetris cartridges. In 2009, a player named Harry Hong became the first to achieve the highest possible score of 999,999 points. Inspired by this achievement, filmmaker Adam Cornelius produced a short film about Harry called “Max-Out”, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to document the world of competitive Tetris. As word of Adam’s Kickstarter campaign spread, rumors of max-out scores from other Tetris Masters began to surface, threatening the supremacy of Harry’s achievement. With the help of Nintendo World Championship veteran Robin Mihara, Adam searched for all of the Tetris Masters he could find. Jonas Neubauer emerged as an early max-out artist, along with the elusive original champ Thor Aackerlund. The idea of bringing these and other NES Tetris Masters together to compete in a live tournament became an obvious and irresistible proposition which was artfully captured in the 2010 feature length documentary Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters. Under the leadership of producer Vince Clemente, The Classic Tetris World Championship is currently held at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, an annual event which has hosted the tournament since 2012. Chuck Van Pelt and his organizing committee have built the PRGE into the largest classic gaming expo in the country, drawing around 10,000 attendees. Every year the scores get higher. Rivalries are revisited once again, and new players emerge to challenge the old guard. Over 100 players have maxed out the score now. Will you be the next? ecstasyoforder.com thectwc.com Игры
The fact that Joseph and Allen are what we are gonna consider "Veterans" this season is wild
Anyone who played at a live event pre covid 19 is a veteran now lol.
Well, Joseph is definitely a veteran because this is his 3rd year, but I think this is brodindamps 2nd year so I'm a little hesitant to call him a veteran
@@davidjennings2300 true its just that for the past 2 years, even if joseph won and stuff, they would still be called rookies cause of how new they were, but now they dont really have anyone else to call veterans themselves ya know? No Harry Jonas etc. the next gen really took over quick
@@oaksenya oh yeah I agree. And there were a few long time veterans who played and made it deep in the tournament, like Jonas, Harry, Terry, and Alex. But now skill isn't represented by how long you've played the game, but how much you've improved your game.
@@davidjennings2300 I don't think anyone ever evaluated anyone by how long they've played. It has always been a skill metric.
The real champion here is the RUclips recommendation algorithm
BOOM TETRIS FOR JEFF
The way CheeZ_Fish hold his controller look like he's playing guitar.
soulless 5 on tetris
It's pretty crazy that the average age of the top 8 is 17. Chocolate milk FTW!
Children are always good at games
If Koryan made it the average would've sky rocketed
@@tetristime9691 HAHAHA
Facts Evy
and the average PB is 1,317,050
:o
Congratulations Jeff for creating a new generation of Tretris players.
If Joseph wins he should be proud of going 3 for three.
If he loses, though, he should be proud of leading the way and influencing the new players to be their best.
The matches should be great to watch, whatever happens.
It's so funny how many of them started to participate because of BOOM Tetris for Jeff! :D
Indeed.. what a good video recombination can do.. spawn am entire community
Kinda wonder if they were told to
@@GaneshNayak how did you get verified with 38 subscribers?
I recall agamescout's documentary about 2018 when i look at this showcase because it really emphasizes how Joseph's entry was the opening of the floodgate of the next generation of top level players. The ones who have the blessings of youth from a reflexes and time standpoint, and were influenced by Joseph's win and the meme video.
Seriously, that boom tetris for jeff meme video just might be the most important video for the ctwc lol
It sort of feels like the Smash Melee scene post-documentary, but the old ones were still on top, but that is changing in 2020.
"I've been playing since January this year" - I wonder what Jonas and other veterans were thinking 😂😂😂 RIP
s34nVideos he has been playing seriously since January, he didn’t start in January
@@jakesmith5485 he started in December 😂😂😂
s34nVideos OH SHIT lmao, he’s got a natural talent lol
They feel like frauds and impostors.
Probably nothing lol, jonas and other veterans have never practiced as hard (or more importantly, never practiced in the same way)
Jonas has already an adult life and tetris is more like a hobby to him, meanwhile these kids have all the time in the world to play tetris and spam duels against one another (especially guys like dog and andy for example, they are brothers who just push each other all the time)
If Jonas started playing hypertap and started to spam milion attempts per day, playing a lot at level29 too he would get on their level as well, meta just changed completely.
There's also the thing that playing 3 hours per day for a week usually gives you more improvement than one hour for 3 weeks.
Look at games like osu for example, some players play for 6 years, some play for 2 years and are on the same level, but if you were to look at their playcount, the numbers are just as high for all of them (with variance of course).
Rooting for the man who got me into Tetris Joseph..
What's Tetris Joseph?
His match with Jonas got me into Tetris too.
Allen and Joseph being the veterans feels kinda wrong :D
Joseph is, not sure about Allen
I love Allen's answer to what it would mean to win the championship... "It would mean an upset occurred"
7 of the 8 finalists: "If I win, it will be an absolute miracle"
Dog: "I'm clearly the strongest, none of these guys are that good"
And he won. 😁
@@Alvin_Vivian bruh why u gotta spoil it

Feels bad for Nenu, he gotta play at 3 am lol
He plays at that time all the time lol
He plays ctm / other tournaments in the nighit and he does.good :D
Feels good. He gets to compete at all which wasn’t even available before. Excited for his run
Good luck Nenu! I know it is hard to play in 3 am, but I believe you can do it! 🇲🇨
Poland with Nenu!

@@michutetris6502 Oh, well it's actually Monaco

Keys to being the best Tetris player in the world:
- Be 9 years old
- Play for a week
Seriously though, some of these guys have only been playing for like a year? WTF!
Same as why there are 9 years old tennis players, who could beat 19 years old tennis players, who already play for 10 years: they are simply better.
Talent, mechanics and reaction times matter. You can make up with muscle memory and good stacking, but if a tough situation comes around, they can handle it, but you cannot. They win, you lose.
Simple as that.
I'll add:
- Show up just to qualify
They probably have played for the same amount of hours but have more free time to spare on it so they can get good in under a year.
@@uhhidk8253 Also, hypertapping with good stacking is hard. It requires quick thinking and good hand health. Koryan at his age keeping up is a miracle in and of itself, since good tapping is definitely a young man's game.
@@giacomoriva9842 Severe jetlag most likely as he flew to Portland from Japan to compete.
This man cheez is my cousin he is a very humble kid and I haven’t seen him this happy for something in a while he deserves to be where he’s at with this stuff proud of this man
BOOM tetris for Jeff! honestly what got me interested in it. I'm not a player just a spectator lol
Boom Tetris for Jeff meme brought a lot monsters to the game
Been following and rooting for Nenu all of this time. So proud of him that he could be in the top 8. Go Nenu! you can do it!
Gutted that he lost to Andy in the Semis but for a country that hasn't been in the scene for that long, reaching the semis is a grea job. Considering that his power also went out and needed to go to his friend tk continue playing. He almost had it to but that Game 3 O piece was just, ugh.
Nenu is top 4!!!
Interesting how many of the finalists got into the game through the 'BOOM! Tetris for Jeff' video. I thought it would have been the Jonas/Joseph 2018 final, although no doubt that had a massive impact on the growth of the game too. I wonder how different the previous years' knockout stages at Portland might have been if some of the younger players had shown up (I'm guessing the cost of flights and accommodation would have made it difficult for some of them to participate). Honestly, it's amazing what this new generation are doing, their skill levels are incredible and they've raised the bar to a height I don't think anyone could have imagined just a couple of years ago. But I also want to give a shout out to the 'old guard', the likes of Jonas, Jeff, Alex Kerr, Ben Mullen, Quaid, Harry, Jani, Buco and all those other players who've turned up year after year to support the CTWC particularly when the Tetris community was much smaller. I hope we continue to see them for many years to come. Anyway, good luck to the Top 8 tonight!
Playing tetris at 3AM will really be something for Nenu, so hopefully he does well and clinches the win!
this was fantastic, can't wait for tomorrow! and thank you, this year the commentators did an absolutely fantastic job! last there there was alot of spoilers, but not this year. well done!
NENU FOR CTWC 2020 CHAMPION!!🇲🇨🇲🇨
It's insane that the (arguably) second-best player here is 13. The Tetris Brothers are basically the Chess prodigies of Tetris.
And he played the game for one year and a half...
Nenu's CTWC 2020 story is testament to what a great community CT is. That level of community is extremely rare in gaming.
So many new names! So many new hypertappers!! Insane!!
Man this finals is gonna be crazy. CRAZY!
Really nice video and really nice to see all these fantastic players. This will be an insane competition :-)
Love this video, great work hyping up the final
Wait.
Cheez is 14??? 😭 That's insaaaane
Actually, I thought at least 17
Not really insane. There is really no physical skill required to play. Just a good understanding of proper piece placement. It's a just a video game.
I'm so hyped for tomorrow!
I am so pumped!
Great Preview
I can't believe how young they are, so impressive!
Great interview video!
Awesome teaser, can't wait for the finals.
Joseph’s pb is actually 1,439,173. Come on, I am sure we all believe he got it, right?
Yeah, we believe him, but still, its not an official score
We know it's possible, we know he can do it, but we'd like to see it on video. Considering it took a while for 1.3s to show, until Joseph got the first, I know he'll get an official one probably before the end of 2020
@@PeterJavi Unlikely it will be done officially prior to the end of this year. A 1.4 score requires near perfect play with optimal RNG. Those things don't line up very often.
@@limitbassfishing2733 I'm not sure, these guys are all playing an insane amount right now, so the number of opportunities for a 1.4 have never been higher.
@@limitbassfishing2733 Not necessarily when you get tetrises on level 29, which I believe is the key.
So really he needs anywhere from a low 1.3 pace with level 29+ tetrises, to near perfect 230 line play.
I don't think he'll get perfect RNG this year, or next year, but those level 29 tetrises seem quite plausible.
I suggest you guys make it clear that the 'Tetris Effect : Connected Launch Invitational' VOD is also the Top 8 Main Event for CTWC. The VOD is labeled "Tetris Effect : Connected Launch Invitational" on your Twitch channel, with no mention of CTWC Top 8. The CTWC Top 8 section starts around 05:00:00 on the VOD.
Will miss hearing "TETRIS FOR JONAS!" this year :'(
@Marcin Zalewski Hadn't watched the finals yet when I commented here =)
Hyped for same piece sets for these top players.
Joseph has such a great on-camera presence now. It is wonderful to see.
Everyone seems so nice!! Gl to you all
Congrats Nenu! Indonesia represent!
Ayo semangat NENU, semoga juara...
Indonesia selalu mendukung mu!!!🇲🇨🇲🇨
We are about to watch the most insane Tetris the world has ever seen!
Go for the title Nenu!!! Rooting for you
How does cheez play tertris with one eye?
Richard plays with closed eyes lul
Probably easier, since it's a 2D screen and you don't have to deal with depth.
@@wschmrdr How is that easier?
Don't you know a person with one eye can see more than a person with two eyes can see? The person with the one eye can see the other person's two eyes, whereas the person with the two eyes can only see the other person's one. :P
@@wschmrdr As someone who sees out one eye......your statement is not true at all 😂
It feels like competitive Tetris has reached a whole new level, and it’s only beginning...
Young Master Joseph has grown a lot. Not only in appearance, but as a person as well. That is quite impressive. Huff also appears very mature and Cheez was younger than I expected. Personally I wish Nenu takes the crown from Young Master Joseph as new blood and variation is really good and championship must leave US finally. Maybe separate categories for Youngsters (under 18) and Elders (over 18) might be improvement to format.
Of the Top 8, 1 started from an article about Jonas (which led to watching BOOM Tetris for Jeff), 4 started because of BOOM Tetris for Jeff, and 2 started because of Joseph v Jonas. (Sam did not state what got him to start.)
Good luck Nenu!! You can do it!!!
The older tetris players must be so proud to see a new generation come into classic tetris
I got to chat with the players, it's amazing how quickly they mastered the game.
Hype is real. Let's go 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Bro cheez looks like he’s shredding guitar when he plays that’s so freakin rad
Amazing video!
I hope Nenu wins this year. This is probably the only year he'll be participating in the CTWC championship tournament because he prolly won't be able to fly all the way to Portland in the coming years to compete. Go Nenu!!!
Classic Tetris, the next generation. This will be a great championship.
I like how everyone else was normal, and then Allen went in all intense.
this is gonna to be great! lets go CheeZ_Fish, Dog, and Jospeh!
Wait a second. How many of these great tetris players don't even have a driver's license?!
Shhh they play crazy tetris and that's all matters
I won't be able to watch the live stream since I live in Australia and there ain't no way I'll be able to wake up at 7am so I was just wondering when the vods will be uploaded to youtube? Looking forward to the greatest finals ever!
you can rewatch the stream on their twitch channel even the live already ended!
@@owyentabby Really, cool! Thanks for letting me know :)
So looking forward to the top 8 matches...
Allen sounds like he already has all his college app essays prepped
This is going to be the most intense top 8 in CTWC history. Hope less early top-out and more deciders could happen.
What a tournament this year. Full of kids that were not even embryo when this version came out.
I'm going to say it will be Joseph vs Sam Finch at the end. Joseph taking his 3rd Championship.
Great group this year. I'm proud of all you kids for making it this far.

Most people found that out earlier this year during the qualifiying period. There was a moment on stream when one brother burst into the other brother's room in excitement. Which revealed that pixelandy and dogplayingtetris are brothers. It was a really heartwarming clip and made it around the tetris community.
