Fun fact: A handful of lines in this movie are improvised, mostly on Matthew Lillard's (Stu's) part. "My mom and dad are gonna be so mad at me," was completely ad-libbed, and the iconic "You hit me with the phone, dick!" was a result of a mistake. Skeet Ulrich was supposed to slam the phone on the table, but his hands were covered in so much fake blood that it slipped out of his hand and accidentally hit Matthew. The resulting "You hit me with the phone, dick" line, was Matthew's *genuine* reaction, and it felt so fitting that they left it in. There were more improvised lines ("I always had a thing for ya, Sid" "In your dreams" to name a few), but those are the funniest imo.
Bonus fun fact: Ghostface's voice actor Roger L. Jackson (Also the voice of Mojo Jojo in the Powerpuff Girls), recorded all of his lines on the set but hidden. He would be secluded in a room and talking to the actors through an actual phone call. The point was that if the actors didn't know who was talking to them, it made the experience scarier and their acting more genuine. They did this for so long, that Roger hadn't actually met any of the cast until 2015. There's a video you can find of Neve, Skeet, and Roger all on a panel together at a convention in 2015, and when asked when the former two had met Roger for the first time, the answer was "we met three weeks ago".

I love how Scream just knows what it wants to do and it just does it. I also love how much it messes with your brain. Most people probably think, "Oh. Billy is obviously suspicious. But the movie is pointing out how suspicious he is, so maybe that makes him less suspicious. But maybe making him less suspicious actually makes him more suspicious". And it makes you go back and forth between whether he's innocent or not. And then the reveal that yes, he is suspicious but there's also another killer. I love it. Billy and Stu have such a fun dynamic. Especially on rewatch. They definitely give off a little 💅 in their interactions. But you know what they say. Couples that stay together, slay together. And boy did they slay.

Lovely little meta gag you may have missed not being a horror fan: the school janitor the principal talks to briefly is dressed as Freddy Krueger from the Elm Street movies, and is played by Wes Craven who directed both this and Nightmare on Elm Street.
This movie was revolutionary when it came out. Wes Craven coming back to the slasher genre he helped popularise during a period where everybody was over it, making a perfect satire of it all, and spawning a huge new wave of slasher popularity in the process. Perfect movie, one of my all time favourites.

The great thing about Scream was it was so self aware, in that it even though it is a serious subject it constantly refers to old Horror films and makes reference to the plot of them etc. It also spawned superb sequels, each on of them is great too and well worth a watch. You gotta do the sequels, the writing is just so clever. Wes Craven killing off the most famous person in the film in the first few minutes. An incredible amount of such famous female actors in the Scream films just too many to mention.

It's great on at least two fronts. Craven actually manages to teach a master class in horror writing/directing, while simultaneously breathing life back into the slasher genre, which by 96 was troped out and thoroughly dead. True! He manages to turn a slasher flick into a whodunnit only for the twist at the end to be that there were two killers. He purposefully sets up ways to give alibis to one or the other but never both, so if you assume there is one killer, you would never guess it. Wes Craven is absolutely unparalleled in slasher horrors.

Scream is a masterpiece in the genre. It toes the line of meta-ness while never going too overboard. The script is super tight, especially with the double killer reveal. This movie was a shot in the arm to the slasher genre when it came out. We had been subjected to all the supernature killers of the 80s and all their rip offs and the genre was starting to become boring. This movie, at the time, was a breathe of fresh air. I saw it three in the theater. It was released in December 1996 but I think it was re-released in the summer of 1997. or, maybe It was just the theater in my town that did that. FYI, Billy hitting Stu with the phone was not scripted. When When Skeet Ulrich through the phone, the fake blood made it stick to his hand and it hit Mathew Lillard by accident, but his reaction was genuine.

I think it did get rereleased, cause my friends and I went and saw it the weekend before graduation. Course back then, multiplexes would keep a movie for 6 months if people kept going to see it. But you got a point, when it came out in December, I didn’t care. The trailers made it seem really generic, and Dimension was more associated with straight to video quality movies at that time.

    Fun Facts:
    - So when Tatum said to Dewey that the janitor is your superior, it's true cause the janitor at the school that was dressed as Freddy Krueger was Wes Craven, who directed Scream-Scream 4. He also directed the original Nightmare on Elm Street.
    - So before Scream came out in 96, the caller ID was not popular at all. The caller I.D. sales in the U.S. tripled after Scream was released, lol.
    - Billy AND Stu were at Casey's and used their girlfriends as Alibis for being out. Stu was on the patio with Steve while Billy was in the front, tormenting her on the phone. The question about "Which door am I at" was a trick question. Stu ran to the front door to let Billy in. You could hear the front door open before she went outside through the kitchen. Also, when her parents got home, the front door was open. When her mom was hearing Casey breathing on the other end of the phone line, you can hear one talking to another saying "tree," and the phone ends. Also, when Steve was tied up, he was looking at both directions of the house.
    - Wes Craven lol to get his actors into character emotionally like Drew Barrymore (Casey) and Neve Campbell (Sidney) right before he start to film he would run up to them and tell them something terrifying. With Drew Wes Craven would tell her real-life stories of animal cruelty to bring out her emotions and then run off and yell action, lol.
    - Roger L. Jackson is the voice of Ghostface for ALL of Scream movies. For every film, the actors were never allowed to meet him before or see him during filming, so that way, when they were on the phone with him, it would give them that real fear effect. Wes Craven always kept him hidden from the others to where they couldn't see him, but he was still able to see them. He also improved a lot of his lines as well.
    - Neve Campbell (Sidney) was originally going to say no to the film as she is especially afraid of horror movies. But when hearing her co-star Skeet Ulrich (Billy) from "The Craft" (1996) was going to appear, she agreed. They did both movies back to back that same year.
    - They casted Skeet Ulrich as Billy Loomis and gave him the same kind of hair style cause of how close he looked like to young Johnny Depp in Nightmare on Elm Street who also climbed in through a bedroom window. His last name, Loomis, is a reference to Dr. Loomis in Halloween.
    - Also, after he climbed through her window, the first time "Fear the Reaper" was playing. He climbed through her window to distract her and turned on her stereo to cover up the background noise of Stu kidnapping her dad. If notice he was wearing the same outfit at the end.
    - The news lady that was harassing Sidney "how does it feel to almost being butchered" at the school is Linda Blair from the Exorcist.
    - If you look really closely when Billy was "stabbed" in the bedroom, you can see Stu adding the fake blood onto the knife before wiping it off.
-Casey's comment about Nightmare on Elm Street about how the first was good, but the rest sucked. It's because Wes Craven only did the first one and didn't direct all of the other ones, lol.
-Kenny actually saved Sidney in his literal final moment AFTER his throat got slashed. He pointed to the back and told her "door" so she could crawl out.
    - Ghostface in the bathroom was a prank on Sidney it wasn't either Billy or Stu.
    - Rose McGowan(Tatum) was actually able to fit through the cat door. They had to staple her shirt to the door cause she kept falling out. Also, just before her head got smashed in, she herself added, calling out "mom," and Wes loved it and kept it in cause it gave her last moments of humanity. Rose also picked out her own outfits for her character. The jersey she wore with #10 was also a reference to Johnny Depp in Nightmare on Elm Street.
    - When Billy hit Stu in the head with the phone, it was an accident on Skeets part. The fake blood was so sticky and ended up hitting Matthew Lillard instead of the desk, and his "Oww You hit me with the phone D***" he stayed in character and was his real reaction to it. Wes loved it as well, so he kept it, lol. Matthew also improved most of his kitchen scene with his lines, like with "Houston, we have a problem," "the peer pressure, I'm far to sensitive," and the comment about his parents going to be so mad, lol.
    - That WHOLE kitchen scene took about 2 weeks to film because of the amount of high energy that was used as well with all of the fake blood (corn syrup dyed red).
    - Neve Campbell and Matthew Lillard actually started dating while filming Scream and were together for a little while. So that whole "I've always had a thing for you, Sid" was true, lol. He originally auditioned for Billy, but the casting didn't believe that someone like Sidney/Neve would date someone like him, lol. So he ended up getting Stu, and Skeet got Billy cause of his look alike to Johnny Depp. The funny thing is that even though the casting thought that about Matthew, they ended up dating real life anyway 😂 even though they didn't last that long as a couple they are still close friends. The OG cast are still pretty tight to this day (especially Skeet, Matthew, Neve and Jamie *Randy*) and they do A LOT of different conventions over the years together and still do.
    - When Billy got stabbed with the umbrella the 2nd time, it actually hit Skeet, where he had heart surgery when he was younger, so that scream he let out was his real action to the pain.
    - Drew Barrymore was supposed to play Sidney. But she ended up changing her mind and she herself went to Wes with an idea to have her as the open kill cause no one would expect it because of how popular she was in the 90's. Also, it would show if they could kill off a huge star right off the bat it would mean NO ONE was safe. It was the BIGGEST surprise shock effect for the audience cause they assumed she would be the leading character and they played into it with the publicity and posters.
-Even though Billy was at Sidneys for the attack it was Stu who she fought with. When he was tripping up the stairs you can hear ghostface saying "easy" "easy". The next day at the lockers, he was checking his face in Tatums mirror for any bruises, and when Tatum was hitting him with her sucker he says "easy" "easy.
-Billy was always 1 handed with his killing if he had a knife if didn't he resorts to choking except for Tatum he used the opportunity with the garage door. He gave a signal look to Stu at the front door that Tatum was dead. Stu uses both hands when using the knife and resorts to other tactics if he doesn't have a knife like the both times he fought Sidney.
-Stu was the one that called Dewey about the abandoned car to get him away from the house for a little bit and also called Randy about the principal after the whole "I'll be right back." Billy killed the principal so they could use him as a deploy for later that night to get the rest of the guests to leave the house so the real party could begin.
    - Dewey was originally supposed to die in this one, but Wes Craven and everyone just loved David Arquette when they did a screen view test and how he played his character. They all fell in love with him, so Wes went back and they reshot the ending where he had Dewey do the thumbs up to show the audience that he survived.

The Scream franchise is very much a self-aware homage to the slasher movie genre. By the mid-90's, slasher movies started becoming stale and formulaic because they were rife with overused clichés and tropes that audiences were very much aware of. So in order to bring a fresh take to the genre, Wes Craven (creator of the Nightmare On Elm Street series) wrote and directed Scream, incorporating those well-worn clichés and tropes into the plot. Craven also appears in a cameo as the high school janitor "Fred", dressed in Freddy Kruger's signature fedora and striped sweater.

    • @MysteriousMrL

Wes Craven didn't write Scream, which is a bit surprising since it's such a natural followup to New Nightmare and how self-referential that was. But the writer of the original Scream along with 2 and 4 was Kevin Williamson. As big a role as Craven played, Williamson is called the creator of the series and I think the most recent ones give him a "characters created by" credit.

A few fun facts. Wes Craven, the creator of "Nightmare On Elm Street," had already did a movie that was supposed to be real life imitating a movie, which was "Wes Craven's New Nightmare" where Heather Langenkamp plays both herself and Nancy, the character she played in the original 1984 movie. But he wanted to do a movie about a group of high school kids who loved horror movies and what they would do if their lives were in danger of a killer on the loose, which turned out to be genius before social media would help movies as they do today with people like yourself reacting to them.
This movie wound up reviving two things. First, this was Drew Barrymore's comeback that led to her becoming not only an A-list actress again, but her creating her own movie company. It also gave new life to the slasher genre as they had seen a huge decrease in popular and number of movies made as after the box office success lead to Jamie Lee Curtis coming back to the Halloween franchise when she did "Halloween: H20."

Easily one of my favorite horror movies of all time. Matthew Lillard was such a highlight and is amazing in everything he does.

Great reaction Nat. If you do decide to watch Scary Movie, you should watch I Know What You Did Last Summer first. It parodies both that and Scream most heavily.
Some Halloween movies that might be up your alley, Love at First Bite, Young Frankenstein, Haunted Honeymoon, and Mars Attacks. They are all very lighthearted.
I think you'd enjoy continuing the Scream series. 3 was a little disappointing, but still had fun moments. I enjoy all the rest of them.

I saw this one on theaters and to this day i still use “you better liver alone” the whole time. Also Linda Blair’s cameo as a reporter is pretty cool.

I remember as a kid I thought Scream was this "one of the cool horror movies everyone talks about". But when watching it as an adult it really is just black comedy. I love the ghostface's identities. Stu is such a character

Nat! You should definitely watch the entire series. One of the most iconic horror film franchises ever! Sadly Scary Movie kind've ruined this movie for me but i still gave it and the others a chance and absolutely loved them! You dont have to do a reaction for Scary Movie but definitely watch it 👍

Matthew Lillard (Stu) is - in my opinion - a VERY underappreciated actor. He's easy to overlook because he has a habit for playing really awkward characters. Stu - Shaggy in Scooby Doo. He's also in 13 Ghosts, as well Nat if you want something to watch for Halloween (unless you've already seen it.)

Your comments about the sex of the victims is actually a common misconception about slasher movies. On average, more men than women are actually killed in slasher films.
