I knew nothing about the sound tests. No access to internet yet. I'd just have to wait to go to a friend's house who had a Genesis, get to the levels, THEN jam out. Dark times those 90's.
I'm a big fan of instrumental video game soundtracks and I must say, Masato Nakamura's composotions for the first two Sonic games still remain among my favorites after 18-19 years because even though we have more complex music from the likes of Jack Wall (Mass Effect games, the games and music are all fanstastic), the more simplistic technology used in making the early Sonic games is more amazing to me because they had to work with less and still made great music.

Why? This is the rightful music to Sonic 2's Hidden Palace. Track 10 was going to be used for a cut-scene. Besides, if that track had been used, I'd have to mute the game to play the stage. The looped version is so damned repetitive.

StH2 Mystic Cave Zone (2P) ~Masa's Demo Version~ ^Mystic Cave 2P (Track 3) on the other hand fits the level's prehistoric, land-that-time-forgot vibe. It's fast-paced, upbeat, and cheery. Perfect music for a Sonic stage.
Andrew Tuell It's a matter of personal preference I suppose, Personally I love both tracks. I guess no one will ever know what the true Hidden Palace Zone music was truly intended to be. The Simon Wai prototype used this music, while all the hack versions on emulators use the other music, its quite a mystery which makes Sonic 2 all the more interesting.
This was always my most favourite favourite song ever in Sonic 2, I'd always mess about just to listen to the song, but then there was the time limit... That'd always spook me.

This song is relaxing to me. Really takes me back to playing with my sister 2P Sonic 2 in the Mega Collection with my old PS2. The track reminds me of rainy and cold nights, like winter.

It doesn't really fit the mystic cave zone as much as the theme that does play for it. It's too upbeat and feels like a bonus stage song more than a normal stage.
I kind of think that what you're thinking of was a different theme -- the unknown, unused track that's a little slower and sadder was HPZ. This one was for the beta level called Dust Hill Zone. You should look it up! :) It's pretty cool. :) You ARE right though -- a lot of people don't realize that these songs were going to have more of a purpose than to serve the two-player levels. I'm glad they didn't make THESE ones unknown tracks too!! This is my favourite one!!
I like this song! It reminds me of the Japanese cartoon: Love Hina. I imagine Mutsumi Otohime playing the keyboard. I also imagine Motoko Aoyama playing the bass guitar.

@@retrofan4963 for most of the prototypes/betas, the theme used for HPZ was the theme for MCZ 2P. And if you listen to the latter track, you'll notice a resemblance between its bass track and the bells in the special stage theme

It was my very first non-atari video game! It's still one of my top 5 favorites! The 2-player was fun in this game, but the 2-player in the main game was even better! Tails was so freakin' helpful as he could bash baddies while Sonic hung out saving his life!

So no shit. I was playing my friend on this map. During zone 2 he fell into the pit of doom. I hit the box the change positions and I got transported to that pit and he won. 🙃

long story short, "the pit" is a popular death trap because it's a long pit down from a hanging point that looks like a lower path, but it's actually considered to be a main canon Kaizo trap because all you find at the bottom is a bed of spikes and no way out... not even Super Sonic's increased jump height can get you out of there, and tails can't fly by player control or pick sonic up, so you're stuck there until you die by the spikes (or if Super, run out of either rings or time)
As a kid, I didn't know Mystic Cave Zone had different themes depending on 1-player vs 2-player modes. I found that out later when I was questing one day.
