Floppy Feet & Ketone Cow: Dexter-Mini Jersey Cross

  • This spring's calving was a rollercoaster experience. We bred our Dexter cow Sangria to a mini-Jersey, anticipating a small calf. Instead, she birthed a nearly 60lbs calf. Then the calf had trouble walking due to tendons being either contracted or lax. Followed immediately by a metabolic issue for mama cow; ketones registered in her urine.
We milked twice a day for the first month, with little to no separation, as Sangria overproduced her calf. Four months later we have settled into a once per day milking following a 12 hour separation, and usually get 3/4 gallon. Sadly, there is very little cream for us at this point.
Daisy's color has also dramatically changed as her coat is deepening into a darker black-ish coat, though she currently has a red stripe running along her back and on the top of her head, and the Jersey white muzzle.

    Hello Simon and Heather,
As VP of the Purebred Dexter Cattle Association, your comments are greatly appreciated. Especially since they are an unbiased, honest viewpoint of someone newly involved with Dexters.

She is beautiful with those rich colors. So happy to see her overcome the problems at birth.

Yes we are. We just pushed out a restoration video on our little Ford. It has taken a lot of our time to work on and hopefully we will get a new cow video out in the near future!

Okay but honestly who cares what people say! I love the belfairs (Dexter jersey) and my all time favorite is mini hereford mini jersey cross. Great dual purpose mini for the homestead. Love your channel. And just wanted to say Sangria is gorgeous... I love her body frame and my favorite thing about her is the way her horns curl. Reminds me of a shorthorn cow. I prefer the “dairy curved” horns than the regular kind if that makes any sense, lol! Thanks for sharing

People that worry about cross breeding are silly. There is a purpose for everything, so purebreds are great, but if it isn't precisely meeting your needs in a cow then try to breed one that is. It's basically how we ended up with the breeds we have. I'm hoping to get a few Milking Devons myself but I'll likely cross some to Jersey for a milkier cow. Keep up the good work. I really like your content. I'm anxious for a spring update. p.s. Your kids are just too cute.
