Who can forget qawwali of HUM KISI SE KUM NAHIN and 50% songs of same movie were sung by Great Rafi Sahab ! Though I am die-hard fan of Kishore Da, but I equally respect Rafi sahab and listen his song with equal dedication ! Love and respect for legends !
The famous song "Chura Liya Hai Tumne jo dilko" is also composed by RD. So there is no comparison between two legends. They are the legends in their own time and style.

Rafi Sab was an institution by himself, no single music director could break him or his career. In fact music directors came into limelight because of him. I don't know where or who started this rumour that R. D. Barman ji was against him. An emotional song sung by Rafi Sab for Mehmood apart from other songs of Chote Nawab brought Barman Ji into the fold of wanted music directors. Music has no communal bonds or boundaries. Alas for the songs of the golden era, such will never return.
Ofcourse it was Mohammed Rafi whose voice enabled music directors to get recognition in the field of music.
70s were the years of Kishore da. Producers only used to ask the music directors to have Kishore da to sing for their movies. It was not at all Pancham da’s decision always. Still he used Rafi Saab’s voice whenever it looked appropriate.
In fact many of Rajesh Khanna hit songs are in the voice of Rafi Saab. For example…

There was no such thing as rivalry. Rafi Sahab, Kishoreda and Mukesh jee, all three of our legends were great in their own right and shared deep admiration for one another, with no hunger of publicity.
1st of all let me start my saying that I m a diehard pancham da and kishore da fan...however no one can deny the greatness of Rafi Saab.
So those who say pancham da sabotaged Rafi saabs career for them I would say that Rafi saab was so great that no one could ever destroy him. 2nd the kind soul Pancham da was he would never ever even think of doing any such petty act.

Pancham was such a beautiful soul, he could have never done this to anyone yet alone, Rafi Sahab .... although he was himself ignored .... logon ne 1985 kay baad Pancham Da ko bhula diya tha .... what a tragedy it was ... such a talented composer couldnt see his own success of 1942 A Love Story .... will always miss u Pancham Da .... always yr fan ..... in 70s it was like RD Burman and Kishore Kumar and LP and Rafi Sahab, just like in the early 90s it was Nadeem Shravan and Kumar Sanu and Anand Miland and Udit Narayan

A composer must use the voice that's appropriate for the song. But it's also a fact that the heroes of the 70s and 80s wanted Kishore to do playback. When Mithun Chakraborty married KIshore' s ex wife Yogita, Kishore refused to sing for Mithun. Mithun was upset because the top heroes used KIshore' s voice only and he didn't want some second level singer 😀

Rahul gave some 400 songs to Kishore but only some 100 songs to Rafi. Film teesri manjil had shammi kapoor, so Rafi was a must. Last and not least, no music director could ever made or break Rafi sahab's career. Rafi sahab was such a gem. And Rafi sahab sang some 11 songs for actor Kishore. I salute the legend for lip syncing in these 11 songs sung by our Rafi saab.
Rafi Sahab never played politics through out his career. I won't mind saying that there were music directors who tried some dirty politics. From Dilip Kumar to most of the actors Rafi Sahab were their first choice.

Rafi's voice was inevitable. Even Anil Biswas, Hemanth Kumar , Kishore Kumar, Salilda, Ramachandra C......could not find alternatives for Rafi, and helplessly they used Rafi's playback singing
No...compare the popularity of the songs which were sung by Kishoreda & Rafi...That will answer you. Even Madan Mohan was compelled to use Kishoreda to attempt a comeback. The song "Simti si sharmai si..." is a case in point!
Even i feel its not right to say a single composer can destroy an established singer. Rafisaab has thousand composers lining up in his threshold dying to work with him. One swallow does not make a summer.

True,Panchang came to the big league , holding the hand of rafisaab,and then started ignoring him.
Thanks to madan Mohan and later laxmikant pyarelal,that rafisaab made a comeback,after being subdued for 4-5 years.

Was it RD Burman's obligation to keep giving songs to Mohd Rafi? Pancham gave songs to whoever he thought right. Film music wasn't created to give songs to Rafi.
I agree that R D Burman did not sabotage Rafijis career, however after the release of ARADHANA he had to flow with the public taste and hence Kishore ji had a major share in his compositions.

Composers has their own choice. Rafi was choice for laxmikant pyarelal and remained on top with super hit numbers for LP. Films like sargam, karz, naseeb, dostana, Ram balram was in every one's lip with LP super composition at the time of his death. No difference whether RD

Kishore Kumar and RD Burman were the best combination that Indian film music has ever seen but Rafi Sahab gave some of his best songs and biggest hits with RD. Teesri Manzil, Caravan, The Train, Pyaar Ka Mausam, Yaadon ki Baraat, Hum Kisi se kum nahi (Rafi got National award for Kya Hua tera vaada), Shaan, Abdullah (Maine pucha chand se is evergreen classic), Zamane Ko Dikhana hai
To be honest long ago I had same discussion with my friend, he proclaimed that RB Burman was professional and there was no communal inclinations. Hence gave the songs what suited both Kishore Da and Rafi Saheb....If you remember Pyar Ka Mausam, most of the songs are sung by Rafi Saheb and one song by Kishore Da. Even today I get confused who sang the best for song "Tum bin Jaoon Kahan".... both were legends and great immortal voice.
Great analysis. Rafi sahab and Kishore da were very close friends. However, time and luck are factors which no one can control. It is a fact that Kishore da suited better to Rajesh khanna. That never means he was a better singer than Rafi sahab. Both of them were like Brahma and Vishnu. Different styles, but greatness in both. Rafi sahab is the best singer of all the time.
One of industry's best gift is a bhajan "Man tadpat Hari Darshan Ko aaj". This bhajan was written by a Muslim (Shakeel), composed by a Muslim (Naushad) and sang by a Muslim (Rafi). There are many such examples. Kishore singing Kawwali, sufi song.

I fully agree with you.. Of course I remember RDB said once that his composition suits KK voice and that is perfectly OK. So many music directors patronised Rafi Saab over the years that the legend KK could not get his deserving break. Only after Aradhana, he got his true identity. Both singers were genius and let's not waste time in comparing them. Its not only depends on the music director but the producers as well when it comes to selection of songs and singers. Composers like Anil Biswas, Salil da, C Ramachandra didn't prefer Rafi Saab.. But does it really matter.. So many composer didn't use KK but that did not stop him from becoming one of the greatest...
Rafi sahab was unparalleled singer. Kishore Kumar was versatile singer. Both are legends.

Those misled folk should know that no one cannot ignore singers like Rafi sahab, Kishore da and Lata ji. You cannot ignore the sun by pretending that it is not shining in the sky. The sun will continue to shine irrespective of the fallacious thoughts of some that it does not exist. The same applies to these legendary singers. O P Nayyar sahab did ignore Lata Ji and Naushad sahab did ignore Kishore Kumar, but in my honest opinion, it hardly made any difference to the singers themselves. In fact O P Nayyar sahab and Naushad sahab surely missed working with these great singers. The loss was of these great music directors, who for whatever reasons chose not to work with these two legends.

First off -Rafi saab getting only 1 National award speaks of the bias and music impairment of the so called jury!! Such a shame to them!! Secondly--Rafi saab is such a wholesome & consummate singer--nobody has the calibre to make or break him--his voice is a gift from heavens and he himself was an angelic person--so there!!

Burman Da....loved Rafi Saab too, unlike Naushad, who hated Kishore Da....Can these lovely people say how many songs did Naushad do with Kishore Da....the best singer of Bollywood, who won 7 Filmfare awards, in comparison with Rafi Saab's 6 Awards.....Now this isn't a race....but this is & will remain the truth forever.... @@russelindia ....Sir, kindly go through the dates from where Kishore Da started achieving his awards, Rafi Saab was definitely singing in in the 60's, 70's & early 80's too.....and see in how many years we lost Kishore Da, after Rafi Saab.....it was a combination of beautiful song's, tune, lyrics & singing which made them get so many awards, Rafi Saab in his peek time from 50's onwards was singing, when Kishore Da wasn't even there in the industry..... please comment how many awards did Rafi Saab achieve when Kishore Da hadn't entered into playback Singing..... however far we may go.....the love for both of them will never fade away for the next 1000 year's, this is the kind of work they both have done in a small life span.....God Bless their lovely souls.....

Kishore Da changed with times, & achieved more awards.....but yes here Iam not saying who's better than whom.....they both were world class genius singer's, nobody can match both of them..... Point ki baat karein toh 1944 se 1970 tak kitne awards Rafi Saab ko mile aur kitne Kishore Da ko mile.....& 1970 onwards who received more awards, till 1980, also after Rafi Saab, how many awards did Kishore Da get till he was alive..... Again I say, for me both were Singing God's.....
@@russelindia Exactly so when the trend changed the taste of people too changed.... after 1970.....Rafi Saab's career started going downwards. Rafi Saab ke daur mein Kishore Da wasn't recognised, but when Kishore Da's time came, Rafi Saab was hardly singing, ye daur bhi sabhi ne dekha hai Sir.

I cannot believe that allegation. I am a 70's born guy and I LOVE Rafi! But any Indian growing up during that decade knows there is NOTHING like RDB + KK combo. Nothing can come close to it. The freshness in those songs can never ever be felt with others.

Even his father Sd Burman had a great rapport with Mohd Rafi mostly all Dev anand films of 60’s till Gambler!!

Rafi got his last film fare award for Pancham's music. Also last national award for Rafi was awarded under Pancham's music.

Beautiful fact based Masterpiece bhai. Even here there is a perception that in his last spell Rafi Sb was ignored on religious reasons and Kishireda preferred. I believe its all nonsense. I personally feel SD Burman had a better inkling for Rafi Sb and RD for Kishoreda. We all have our preferences based on demand personal choices and our own perceptions. But going to extremes to say someone destroyed someone is utter nonsense. Here also a famous Pak singer in 60s who sang in Rafi Sbs style said I will wipe out memory of Rafi from people's heart with my voice later became Rafi Sbs friend and in a way disciple. You're right Rahul. Even in Aradhana Rafi Sahab sang Baghon mein bahar hai, Gunguna rahe hain.. even the only National award winning song of Rafi Sahib is composed by RD Burman. Kya huwa tera wada.
But yes the jury of National awards ignored him on several occasions.
