I always thought Randy Rhodes had a Ritchie Blackmore type of style. Blackmore had a different more classical lead guitar style I always thought. Amazing to see old Deep Purple video.
Ian Gillan's voice is what true metal should sound like. Deep Purple were the true pioneers of Heavy Metal! I cant believe I saw them live for a mere $25.00 back then. Thankyou Jesusssssssssss
Jon, music gave you fulfillment, and you gave us music. This music influenced our life and identity. You'll stay in our hearts forever. And now Jon, go on and rock the Elysian Fields with the old mates!
Skips or not, this brings back so many memories.Used to crank this up driving to East Texas State University in Commerce, Texas when the song was new - heading to a hard night of drinking and playing air hockey against the jocks from ETSU, and taking their beer money.I was 15 (had a hardship license) and my best friend, Gary, and I rode in his 396 Chevelle there and back every weekend with this on an 8-track tape.
All the members of deep purple are great musicians , but what makes this song fantastic is the bass and drums. They set the speed for the songs . This is one of my favorites
Simple pure poetry turned into music! No crap no sleazy video's to make it a hit! Just music! And even after 40yrs we still listen to it what else does anyone need proof of?
Kids, recognize and bow down - one of the pioneering true gods of Metal are upon ya! Zeppelin, Sabbath and Purple... where would Rock be today if not for these trailblazers?? Man, speed solos at a time when metal was in its infancy? Richie, you sir are a god! :)
In Eastern Europe they were bigger than any band of the time. I remember when I first heard Smoke on the Water on a crappy Russian cassette player in the 70s. I listen to the song for six hours non stop. I could not sleep at all the night after this. i was so excited. Never again I experienced anything like this listening to any other song and any other band. Long Live Deep Purple.
An incredibly talented group of musicians who were always capable of including a good 50 minutes of inspired playing into every 90 minute show. Saw them several times and was always able to become quite intoxicated grabbing beers during every extended drum, keyboard, guitar and vocal exercise that filled out the remaining 40 mintes of every show. One of my very favorite groups of players, but I pick up the needle any time Ian (or David) goes into either their rapping or screaming act...Peace.
Rest In Peace Maestro, even tho i never had the privilege to meet you i learned so much from you, and admired you so much as a Keyboard player my self!! Today is a very sad day for me but listening to your music will keep your legacy forever in our hearts. -Edward Amadeu.
This video is pure SOLID GOLD.... the legends... one od the BEST for all times Rock Bands....Imagine Gillian saying at the beginning... this is a new song...... and this song was one of the best for all time in the rock history
Jon Lord you should have never died... Stupid question would always be: why this so great musician and not anyone else ? But that's what I ask now... Man you listen to this spectacular and out-of.the-earth song and what else can you say? DEEP PURPLE is probably the best rock'n roll band from all time... JON R.I.P...
As a teenager through the 70's it was instant that I would rock to Deep Purple and now ... as an ageing-old pastit-pisshead-pothead ... I still rock to 'em like I did when I was 17.
Thank you for all the good times you have given us Jon. You'll be sorely missed. You were not only a top-class musician but also a gentleman and a great compassionate soul. Your battle with physical pain is over - enjoy the everlasting bliss of the heavens' peaceful realms.
ya just can't beat the original line up, just awesome. This is the best song on Machine Head by far, the rest of the album is great too, I've listened to it thousands of times.
Pure music. Actual REAL music, played by musicians, who play...instruments! Whoda'think? Don't trust anyone over 30 was the mantra of the day. Today, it's don't trust anyone's musical sensibilities who is under 30 today. They don't know what they don't know.
i was watching DP highway star vid with steve morse on the guitar, and it's just ain't the same, man...i mean, with ritchie, u get this sense of awesomeness....steve morse, it's "he's alright".....this is 100% awesomeness!
One awesome tune! Hittin' on all cylinders 4 sure. John Lord ( as always... superb ) but I'd "almost" forgotten how GREAT this Paice/Glover rhythm section sounded. Haven't listened to this version in a long time. Ian Paice.....Thumpin'! Roger Glover......Tumpin' right along with him. : ) Great music & memories here.......
When I told my 14 yr old son about JLs passing he told me it sucks that none of today's music will ever become classic. Then he looked at me and said "you were so lucky to grow up when you did". I couldn't argue... Even the kids know they're being robbed now.
these guys should be knighted..Sir Blackmore, Sir Gillan, Sir Lord, Sir Paice, Sir Glover, they deserve the OBE. they have already been robbed of a place in the hall of fame.DP is still the most influential hard rock band today...40 decades later, their kickass music is still listened to in the 21st century....
On a Friday night in 1978, we would park our '55 Chevy Belair, named Highway Star, in any public spot, pop the hood, and a crowd would form. Stereo on and instant party!
"What we've got here is a NEW song..." - Gillan's words 40 years ago. By today's standards this is still a NEW song that keeps outshining all the crappy music thrown at us today!!!
Souvenirs!!! les Grands restent à jamais dans la grande Histoire de la Zik... J'aime toutes les Musiques car elles me bercent dans chaque pays que je visite... Je vous souhaites à tous de vivre le meilleurs de votre vie. Coucou d'ici.
Holy shit when I see this I realize how lucky I was to see DP do this live back in spring of '73. They were un-fucking-believable. That show blew my mind and I wasn't even stoned at the time. At their peak the best band in the world until Blackmore left for Rainbow.
I learned to drive in 74 steering and shifting with my left hand while I played the air Hammond with my right with Machine Head in the 8-track. All about a freak and his car. RIP Jon Lord.
..... una ... Joya .... del .. HARD -ROCK .....XXL..

Wonderful! Deep Purple! Love John Lord - I was really blessed to have him comment on my 1970s radio show on my channel!
I always thought Randy Rhodes had a Ritchie Blackmore type of style. Blackmore had a different more classical lead guitar style I always thought. Amazing to see old Deep Purple video.
+Murray Donovan Randy was inspired by Ritchie.. that explains why both are such guitar legends ;)
What a beautiful DUWANG

Great driving song. I remember when this song/album came out. Hard to believe that was 40 years ago. Sounds just as good today as it did then.
Es de 1972 han pasado 40 años y sigue esta musica tan fresca como aquella vez del '72.
Me encanta el timbre de voz del vocalista.
