Another wonderful window on the past, but if I could disagree with one thing, it's that the Rag n Bone man is far from being in a "dying" trade. He's just changed his mode of transport.
That old TV Thames intro brought so much back. Im old...Just subscribed and this Christmas Im gonna hit the nostalgia and go through some of these dusty jewels! Cheers!
Ross Nye Stables, at 8 Bathurst Mews. Still in business although I don't know if they do the farrier work on site. Not seen any horse drawn totters around recently.
I was about to say that's Mr Nye's in Bathurst mews. The girls holding the horse were two years above me at school. He was alright Mr Nye, if you mucked out and polished tack all day he'd give you a free hour's ride at the end of the day or if someone cancelled. Good to know they still operate from the same, barely changed news. I dread to think how much a ride in Hyde Park is now, it was a tenner an hour in about '81/'82, hence the mucking out, tack polishing and grooming horses all day. Very nostalgic. I used to love our old rag and bone man, had a voice like a fog horn RAGBONE! you could hear him before the horse's hooves. He took my mums old cooker away, I must have been really little, I remember crying in case it was too heavy for the lovely horse. Somewhere there was a picture of me as a toddler sat on his back while he chomped away from his nose bag. He'd stopped coming round a few years before this though.
Ross Nye was a fellow Queenslander who moved to London in 1965,where he bought a small riding school and for the next 50 years encouraged Horse riding as means to gain better health and and outlook on life. He passed in 2020 Aged 93.
Had horses 1989 til 2011, a set of shoes in the north was about £35 & increased to over 50. I bet it's nr 100 for a set these days, every 8-10 week too

I love that small got brought up in a rubbish yard with me grandad and family. And aways wanted to be a farrier. They started with 1 horse and cart and ended up with the biggest recycling yard in Europe at one point. But opersit yard was horse yard and when I smelt that use to run over to watch.

I'd completely forgotten about Monty Modlyn until seeing this. He was on TV and radio a lot during my youth. Just getting old ...
If he were still alive, he'd be a 100 now.

He got it real cheap, cash in hand from Derek Trotter. 😁

Thames tv takes me back with that starting tune and london skyline part then 6pm on a friday changed to LWT. Binge watching them now.

Brilliant. I came from a family of West London Totters. Pearlies all.

Fascinating!
I remember rag n bone hollering in the street as a kid, though not horse and cart, a trailer on a bike I think.
I do too, they had horses and carts where I lived. I think they used to do knife sharpening as well.

a mews house near hyde park is affordable only to hedge fund managers now so i doubt a rag -n-bone man could afford it

the old mews streets now gentrified for millions, that guy must of breathed in burnt horse feet for donkeys years. Was that donkey jacket guy Steptoe!
