That's right however to see if that start capactor is bad before replacement I believe it would have to remove the resistor, but that would great increase the service call so like Curtis did was to replace it and complete the job !
The condenser should have been turned around; it will make more sense. But I guess the outer cage was installed later after some robberies in the hood.-

Obviously there are no space requirements for HVAC units. Our neighbor just built a deck next to his A/C . It's between the steps coming off the deck and the house. There can't be a foot clearance on 3 sides.
There is a wiring diagram usually unless it wore off on the back of the cover panel. Usually 1 for fan, one off the contactor to common or c then one from compressor to common then 1 to herm. But like I said check the wiring diagram it will tell you all wires and components.
Why was a hard-start even needed any more? I seem to recall reading somewhere that even new Goodman units need those now, and I don't get it; our relatively new Goodman doesn't have one.
The Material around the AC is Serious Stuff and that Cage is Homemade and Heavy Duty. Have to Cut that Material with a Coal Chisel so Vandals, Beware. 😬👍
Curtis my home ac has been out since last summer and we are getting a new outside condenser and air handler installed hopefully next week and I had a couple guys give me estimates my old unit is a 3.5 ton Gibson 17 years old and one of the guys wants to put a 4 ton my home is 1600 square feet Jim Walters 82 model and said he could do it for 8k and that is all materials and taxes rheem/Rudd unit is it worth going up half ton or should I just stay with 3.5 ton
Your house has been measured and ducts put in for a 3.5 ton unit volume if you go with that 4T unit eventually your will freeze up and break down because it’s too much pressure for the house it will cycle to much also there’s a reason that there are different sized units there are videos on youtube that explains why this i suggest you look into this good luck
My house is 1644 ft.² and originally came with a 3 1/2 ton. I’m in Phoenix AZ and the A/C was running non-stop in the summer. When I replaced it in 2010, all the HVAC contractors recommended a 4 ton system, so I did. I’m glad I did. When it’s 118° out, I can set the thermostat at 78° and it will maintain it. They did have to put a larger line set in, and also add another air filter grill with a return air duct, and also one more supply air duct with a register. They programmed my blower motor to put out 1635 CFM, and balanced the airflow into each room. I’ve been very happy with it for the last 14 years.
I hate to tell you this but you'll be back out there. On those unit you absolutely have to use the manufacturer potential relay. They are wound to where they kick out quite a bit later than aftermarket. Been there done that.. I even misdiagnosed it as a bad compressor later on.. it's now hooked up to my rental running great for the past few years.
I know Georgia has electricity but it only seems to run air conditioners and TVs. Has Mr Edison's light bulb yet to arrive in Southern homes, or do folks down that way just like sitting in the dark? Seriously, in at least 80% of your vids, homes have no daylight inside, no light bulbs on. It's kind of goth.
@bobboscarato1313 I know you already know this, but it bears emphasizing that lighting, especially the new CFL or LED styles, take a teeny tiny fraction of electricity compared to hvac, TV, fans, refrigerator/freezer, electric stove, oven, etc. You could never turn on a single light for a whole month and use a flashlight at night and your bill would go down about 2%.
On a subconscious level, a darkened room "feels" cooler, even if it's really not. So keeping a house dimly-lit will trick your brain into thinking it's a few degrees cooler than it actually is. Having curtains/drapes over windows in the South is a great way to keep cooling costs down, as you're blocking out sunlight that would be warming up your living space. Also, LEDs are cool-touch bulbs, but do emit some IR (infrared) light which we can't see, but we can feel as heat. I've shone a LED flashlight on my fingers in the winter and felt them get warmer - but only in the exact spot the light is shining on. No warmth coming from the flashlight itself, just mild infrared heating to the skin. So a house full of LED bulbs won't get heated by the lights being on - but you'll feel slight warmth on exposed skin.

@@jessemartinez566 a hard start kit adds more torque and reduces the power needed to start the unit. basically taking stress off the compressor on start up which can increase compressor life expectancy (correct me if im wrong)
I guess they like to steal Heat Pumps or Condenser's in those parts but they could've at least made the cage big enough for a tech to not contort themselves just to try and fix the unit.

I think I know the reason behind the cage (theft) but was it installed correctly? Shouldn’t the door be on the side where the panel door is?
The cage is not specifically made for this so of course the unit was there before hand

Comes down to design, manufacturer preferences. A start kit can reduce amps on start up, possibly prolonging life of system.
Tranes is even worse, you have to use the factory potential relay. Aftermarket will work for a little while, then it will start kicking the breaker..
Would you ever replace one of those start kits with the kind where the relay and cap are built together as one piece? They both do the job correct?

They should make capacitor so you can replace them from the outside like a screw on oil filter.

They're trying to save on electricity; here in Houston I have a 1500 sq. ft. home and my bill runs about $ 360.- per month year-round.- Gasp!
