The biggest problem is money. Historical dramas generally cost more to produce due to the need to create era-specific costumes. Sourcing locations to shoot, creating scenery props, casting talents, all of these add to the budget, which I have to guess is the reason we have not seen any historical dramas in recent memory. Modern day dramas are much more cost effective to shoot anyway.
