  • Have you ever wondered how and why filters move across tables and how you can modify the default behaviour?
....if yes, then don't miss today's DAX Fridays! video.
Here is what we will cover:
    1. Explain ISFILTERED function
    2. Explain how filters move across tables
    3. Explain ISCROSSFILTERED function
    4. Modify default filter behaviour.

Brilliant Ruth! The two functions are particularly useful to debug DAX code for complex models. And you are right. bidirectional filtering is almost a guaranteed way to create measures that generate numbers which absolutely do not make any sense.

Thanks Ruth. Could you elaborate a little more why bidirectional is cosidered bad?

Curbal I’ll vote that video up! Or else put bidirect all over all my models!! And we can’t have that? Or what? I don’t know, but you will tell, yes??!!

As a semi-newbie (is that a word?) I think it’s only useful for error finding, or what?
But anyway I’ll think it’ll be useful for that...

😂😂😂 No! We certainly don’t want that! Let me try to do it for this Friday.

    Hi Ruth,
In the case of iscrossfiltered product, it showed true. But we did not select any value from categories table. You said because it's on the many side and the categories on one side which passed the filter.
So it means that if we use iscrossfiltered function on any table column which is on many side, it will always show true even if we don't filter the one side table explicitly.
So there is always an implicit filter in the model.
Is this the case in DAX. Please tell?
    Regards
    Kamal Mukhi

Hi Ruth, can you give us an example of when iscrossfiltered and isfiltered would be the best function to use?

Hi Ruth, Thanks for your videos I love them. I've a question. How can I filter the orders table from Products in Power Pivot since there no bidirectional filtering in Excel? thank you

Hi Imed, you do it with DAX.
Post your specific case in the power Bi community so you can get help!

It leads to data ambiguity, as I remember Alberto said (Pretending I understood that 😄)

I think it would be easier to just say that IsCrossFiltered is true ONLY when there is an indirect filter and that's it. Logically, one might assume that IsFiltered is a subset of IsCrossFiltered. Bi-directional is a bit of a pink herring.

No iscrossfiltered is true when there is direct, indirect or cross filter and it accepts multiple values.

    Hi Ruth,
In minute 4:42 if you pick one category name what will be the result of CF Cat? I think it should be false, because iscrossedfilter function identify indirects filters, isn't it? . Please, let me know if its false or true the answer. Thanks (:
