I can remember my grandfather watching his old black and white. He was not a golfer (He was poor in living in a Depression-lingering northern Maine.) but he loved, just loved watching on Sunday afternoons. And Riviera is one of the courses I do remember, not because I recognized its historical reputation at eleven or twelve years old. Instead, it was the exotic name, Riviera. I love the course still for it evokes the romance of golf in the 1930s. Thank you for this fine discussion.

Interesting comments at the end about the Eucalyptus trees. In addition to everything else, they are an incredible fire hazard because they catch quickly and burn very hot. There was a terribly destructive fire in the Oakland hills in 1991 that was made worse because the Eucalyptus trees ignited so quickly and released so much heat.

The best? Pebble Beach is chopped liver? Riviera gets better weather, but that really isn't a part of the course.
