My first flight to Shobdon was 21 years ago. I was delivering invitations for my 60th Birthday Bash to flying friends. Non-radio, I had to do a go round as a GA came in low on long finals. Flew from Long Marston, similar distance to Darley Moor. After 3 hours on the ground flew to Otherton to see Crash Gordon. Camped overnight. Then to Roddidge to see Mick Shea. Back to my village for a lunchtime pint. 5 hours 20 minutes flying. I loved my XL!
Here's an idea for you: Now that you're familiar with Shobdon, extend your tour from there to Caernarfon (over Mount Snowden en route, of course) and if you're lucky you might get the superb base and final over the sea for runway 07. Then, along the Menai Straight, the north Welsh coast by the Great Orme, over the short wet bit to the north of Liverpool to Crosby to drop in to the fabulously hospitable Ince Blundell for another overnight if required. Finally, back through the low-level corridor to Darley Moor. Lots of lovely scenery to film.
Hi Tim, I thought it would show a little bit more of the process. I think that the planning and PPR seems to put some newer pilots off. It was a great trip.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 So nice that even that little Nine has space to load the gear needed to fly and camp! The skies the limit! You could really get some miles in if you wanted!
@@GolfFoxtrot22 Fab entertainment actually I saw part 2 first for some strange reason.. Where are you based now Giles, perhaps I missed it, as thought you were down South West England.
So behind on my RUclips watching. Great video as always. You two really are the Morecambe and Wise of the air. You should be hired to star in airline safety videos.
A really enjoyable video Giles. You and Paul flying together always make an entertaining watch. Looking forward to seeing your next instalment already 👌👍👏👏
Nice one. Yep same problem with instruments - my fuel gauge doesn't work properly either, though I think we've talked about it before. Looking forward to part 2
Good to see the exciting bit before you had to put up with my company! 🙂 Joking apart it was great to see you both and talk all things flying for a while. As an added bonus I feel we put the world to rights over some grub and a beer/orange juice. 😉
@@GolfFoxtrot22 haha me too Giles! It’s interesting that Shobdon have both Shobon Radio and Shobdon information. It was Shobdon information that I used when I flew down there. You should come up to Barton some time; it’s a very busy airfield with the police and air ambulance operating daily, in addition to GA but it’s an interesting airfield with lots of history around the listed control tower and Pemberton Hangar.
Re camera power.. I use a Powerpack. Mount it somewhere central and run a USB wire to the wingtip. It will run all day. You can run other devices from the Powerpack too.
Hi and welcome to the channel. The camera was running on a powerbank and I'd even bought new batteries for the camera as well. I'd conducted a dry run with the camera and it seems to run fine, it just seems to be onboard. I'm puzzled as to why it now seems to shut down.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 Interesting. My "Black Box" setup has done that too, maybe one in 10 flights. I thought due to being cheapo s/h ebay SD action cams. Second one is backup. What brand are yours?
Giles and Paulie in the same vid! Fly light, Fly safely! Giles, maybe a permanent cable on the wing to the wing camera with a connector near the hang block with enough “service loop” for full articulation of the bar would help. Then you could have a centralized power supply for your accessories somewhere onboard the fuselage.
Hi Tom, I already have a centralised power bank, I've tried removing the main battery and just running on the powerbank. On a dry run it worked for ages, it just seems to not run for a full flight now.
I didn't see all the traffic, however I did see the aircraft near me for my final approach. It was quite enjoyable being in a busy circuit, sad I know.
Hi Giles, thanks for all these videos over the years. I wondered if you could give me some advice please? Im coming from paragliding and paramotoring and moving to flex wing. I wanted your opinion on weather to go sub 70 or something like a Quantum 912. I dont mind doing the licience but just want to get the right machine. Any advice would really be appreciated. You can email if you want, if you want my email address let me know. Thanks again. Dave

It's shows how small the flying community is and how much the XL still has a good following.
Another great video Giles, very busy prior to landing, great scenery. Good music track. 👍👍👍
I do try and use reasonable music. Part 2 should be out this week.
What a fantastic trip it was. 👍

Shobdon, the scene of my first solo cross country. Nice to see its still busy.
It was definitely busy and vibrant. It was even busier the next day, we couldn't get out.
Same for me, EGBO to EGBS and back. Was a little nervous about getting the 'curved' dead side descending join right, but not as bad as expected.
@@nsm3 I hope it brought back nice memories.
Fascinating video , thank you👍
Hi Andy, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks Giles (&Paul). Really useful as I plan to fly into Shobdon tomorrow morning 😊👍
