    Evander was a true warrior who broke my heart by keeping at it long after his days were gone. One of the best light-heavies ever, and no sloucher as a heavyweight.

    Douglas wasn't here prepared as he should've been and basically gave the title away. But what many fail to notice is that most new champions make their first defences often against unworthy challengers. Douglas took the number one challenger instead.

    • @marcus813
      @marcus813 9 лет назад

      +Aristotelezz Sugar Ray Leonard talked about how Douglas' extra weight (8 lbs. heavier than expected) would make him a stationary target and would limit Douglas' combos. No wonder Holyfield knocked him out!

  • @fadethetrade
    @fadethetrade 11 лет назад

    true, once he abandoned the defensive first posture, he resorted to throwing head hunting sloppy lunging right hands and holy and douglas both learned to "step in" on tysons lunges. Gil Clancy said that about Juan Roldan when he was throwing the lunging shots at hearns, he said hearns needs to step in as roldan was reaching with right hands. Same with tyson, he's an idiot for not bringing back rooney who had an excellent understanding of the damato ideology of fighting.His stamina suffered also

  • @fadethetrade
    @fadethetrade 11 лет назад

    No, I know exactly what he was talking about and atlas and rooney as well. Tyson had the greatest elusive style since ali but tyson was laso a swarmer. This was unprecedented in boxing history to be a swarmer style with ali speed and defense. Thats why on his best night tyson beats any human that ever walked this earth.Once that defense of side to side head movement stopped, he started getting hit and the opponents stopped being afraid cause they were able to land shots.Its was a science

  • @Towney007
    @Towney007 15 лет назад

    Douglas when motivated, was truly an elite heavyweight. When he wasn't, he was a fat sloth. I mean prior to this, his only big loss was to Tony Tucker, who was darn near unbeatable for a stretch in the mid-80s. He's really a lot like a worse version of Riddick Bowe. If he could have stayed motivated, he'd have been awesome.

    Good call on Sugar, but I even picked Holyfield that night. Tyson was fairly shot by the time he finally got Holyfield. As for Lennox, I thought he had a very good chance, but I couldn't completely commit to him that night because of his suspect chin (I know other people that DID pick him though).

    Buster didnt give a damn about this fight ,his attitude and training efforts in preparation of this fight showed that Unfortunately. • @fadethetrade

    The way holyfield fought douglas was exactly how tyson would have beaten douglas in 1988 if they fought. Tysons head movement,like holy, would have slipped douglas jabs and counters and tysons better offensive combinations and quickness before 1989,when he trained normally,would have gotten in as holy did. I see the same type of fight that tyson shoudl have beaten douglas with. Holy did exactly what tyson should have done in tokyo but didnt have the mental or physical preparation.

    Those weren't the kind of opponents he faced, he fought big men that hit hard.

  • @yoyo2ma

    Douglas knew he would make 24 to 25 million win lose or draw so I don't blame him. He never intended on being the best just wanted to make a living and support his family. He was smart with his money and is still very rich today from this fight.

  • @christo930
    @christo930 13 лет назад

    If ANYONE KNOWS what underestimating an opponent can do, it Douglass. He should have trained just as hard for holy as he did for tyson. However, I feel like he fell into a depression after the fight when he had to deal with the death of his mother.

  • @WelshDegenerate
    @WelshDegenerate 11 лет назад

    He may have been athletically fine but without that style of fighting... he'll just get picked apart in the heavyweight division, as he did. Tyson's style of ducking and weaving and slipping jabs, and getting inside and working the body with combinations is what made him what he was, without that... he's just 'decent'.

    Man I wish Tyson and Holyfield fought with Tyson in his prime... and I wish Tyson didn't ruin his fkn shit so early on...
    I'm not making excuses for him but seriously - any boxing fan should know that the Tyson fighting Douglas is a JOKE compared to prime Tyson. That just was not him.
    He was slowly walking in looking for a lucky head shot from round 1, getting clobbered with jabs. Prime Tyson is energetic, slipping and bouncing and throwing combos.

    Sorry you Ali-Holmes fanatics--Sonny Liston's jab was better than either in his prime. He could knock men out with it. (If only he wasn't so easily psyched out.) Also, Bruce Seldon didn't have much endurance, but his jab was world-class.

    I forgot to ask you how Holyfield was going to out box Larry Holmes if he could barely outbox Bert Cooper?
    Holyfied's era actually didn't have very may skilled technical Boxers in it, just big hard hitting tough guys that were o.k. as Boxers..
    Now if it makes any sense to decide who will win a fight solely by the toughness of the era they fought in, then Jimmy Young should beat Evander Holyfield lol.
    Ofcourse Holyfield was a great fighter, but so were Foreman and Holmes.

    @capablemachine -
    Tyson won the belt from Bruno, and Lewis sued Tyson to make a mandatory defence since Lewis was no 1 contender. Tyson gave up his belt + $4m
    It would have been far far bigger money had Tyson defended his WBC belt against Lewis. Then that would have set up a unification fight with Holyfield.
    But Tyson knew he couldn't beat Lewis, and thought he could beat Holyfield. He beat neither.
    Fighters dodge fighters ALL THE TIME. Everyone tried to dodge Lewis.

  • @MrEverSoBad

    Holyfield was ready. Look at the sweat on his body before the fight. You can tell alot about how warm a fighter is about looking at the sweat on their body. Look at the Mosely vs Pacman fight. Mosely was bone dry. He didn't even practice warm up in the corner. He was not ready. He wasted everybody's time.

    @fadethetrade some sportscaster said back in the day that the only boxer who could beat Mike Tyson was Mike Tyson. I clearly believe that.
    Sometimes I wonder if Tyson was set up to fail by his meteoric rise .. it was a waste of time for him to fight all those old guys, his real peers were Holyfield, Bowe and Lewis. Too bad he wasn't around in the early 90's battling it out with them.

    And how can you seriously believe that Holyfield was a better technical Boxer than Larry Holmes? As I said, Evander, was a pretty good technical Boxer for his time, but it was his toughness that really set him apart. Ofcourse Holmes fought him smart, that is the point, and on top of that he would now have the killer speed of his prime. Holyfield however WAS in his prime, so if his "chin, counterpunching" etc. would have DESTROYED prime Holmes it would have done it then. .

  • @WelshDegenerate
    @WelshDegenerate 11 лет назад

    Oh but Tyson did decline at that age though, because Tyson was a short and stumpy heavyweight - he had a lot of physical disadvantages... his dominance depended on his style; the style robotically hammered in to him by Cus D'Amto and co.
    Without that, he's just a decent boxer with a lot of holes, which he why he continuously got picked apart as soon as he fired Rooney. As soon as he fired Kevin, he stopped that style, and that's when he started losing. Without the style, there's no Tyson.

  • @HommeoursporcSP
    @HommeoursporcSP 11 лет назад

    Ridiculous ... You do not lose his athletic qualities to 24 years. Tyson was not in decline. His real downfall started when he was released from prison (stay three years to return to the top this is impossible). Only the luck was not with Tyson. It was found in a night club on the eve of battle. divorce being accused of domestic violence. Accusing rape of a 18 year old girl. Douglas was 110% motivated as ever. 14 seconds of the referee.

    Bowe and Lewis weren't contenders until Tyson was in the slammer. Mercer was not highly regarded at the time and vacated the WBO title to look for bigger fights in 1992. Tommy Morrison had lost to Mercer and would have had no chance against Tyson.
    Tyson was signed to fight Holyfield in 1991 but withdrew with an injury and was then arrested and jailed.
    Holyfield would probably have beaten him in 1991 but he didn't avoid the others at the time.

  • @aegisofhonor
    @aegisofhonor 12 лет назад

    James let himself go a bit after winning the belt from Tyson; I think after the Tyson fight, with this mother gone he lost that "spark" he got int he weeks after his mother's death and just ate a lot and really didn't train hard. Though he has a lot of heart in this fight his lack of a proper diet and training regiment really cost him big in this fight; very disappointing. It would only get worse after the fight as he'd balloon to nearly 400 pounds within 4 years.

    Hey I'm not talking about ranking, I'm talking about who would win a fight, two completely different things.
    I don't think it's stupid to rank Holyfield over Holmes on an all time greatest list., but ONE ON ONE Holyfield just isn't taking that fight. Just like I rank Joe Louis higher than Mike Tyson, even though Tyson would wreck Louis in a fight. We know Holy isn't going to Ko Holmes, and that only leaves beating him in a technical Boxing match which is absurd.

    @danning1 Oh yeah he was definately depressed for quite some time after this fight and turned to comfort food. But I don't think he knew how humiliated he would be until the fight happened. My first instinct on earning that much money no matter what the result of the fight is yeah its worth being humiliated one night to become that rich. But I think he regretted not training hard for this fight instead of ordering out for pizza after training. But he is still very wealthy from hat 1 night.

    @MrWondermann
    I think you are overrating Holyfield as a technical Boxer. Admittedly he was a pretty good technical Boxer, but not on the level of Ali, and it was his toughness that really set him apart. Now even Ali didn't dare face Foreman by conventional Boxing but instead covered up on the ropes and plotted to make him punch himself out. It's hard to see Holyfield wanting to do that, much less inventing the strategy in the first place which is far more important ofcourse.
