I believe that also Janelle Monae is the future of music. There is something so special about her where I find find myself liking her as a regular person. She's this big star but I feel I could have a authentic conversation with this woman and I wouldn't feel star struck at all.
I really love hearing this woman talk-she always makes SENSE! She's very intelligent, her thoughts are always so put together. She doesnt stumble over words or look into space when someone asks her a question lol. Shes refreshing to listen to!!!! :)
I could listen to just her talk forever!!! She's smart, classy, sexy, and talented all together! Plus she lets her roots define her and keep her humble!!!
she's a breath of fresh air. i look forward to her third album. i haven't listened to archandroid but i am also very excited to hear that to. i love listening to what she has to say in interviews and in her songs. i think she's very inspiring. she definitely inspires me.
I remember flying to New York with her and being amazes that all that sound and energy come in such a little package.....folks she was able to lie down in a coach seat like a little kid. Last time I saw a grown woman that little was Lisa Lopez (RIP). She too was a spitfire.
omq I swear when I hear her speak my eyes just want to well up with tears..she's the perfect example of how all young blacks girls should exude themselves..Im taking notes as she speaks
Couldn't agree more. I enjoy interviews with people who are able to express their thoughts articulately. Unfortunately with celebrity interviews that seems to be the case less and less these days. Society in general is the same, you only have to look at the spelling, grammar and thought processes (or lack of them) in many comments on youtube to see that intelligence, expression and respect are sadly diminishing. She is talented, intelligent and beautiful -full stop. Regardless of race or gender.
she is articulate. if we can't say she's articulate, doesn't that mean that the myth is controlling reality? You don't hear artist articulate the thinking behind their work like this very often. So, as far as popular young artist are concerned, she is very very very articulate.. and inspiring. She's like a homegrown emotionally grounded Lauryn Hill.
Good for you! However, I think the strange reason might have something to do with the intrinsic need to sometimes feel solidarity within a group... I once heard that it takes all kinds of people to make the world go round and this makes me appreciate those who dance to the beat of their own drums or those who just come from different walks of life with different influences than I had... it's all good! What a great topic, Stephen! Joy & Gratitude
This may sound backwards to so many people but the way she is dressed is so beautiful that it makes her look sexy. Without letting everything hangout and pushed up she looks fantastic. I always enjoy a lady with class.
That's totally true. :) And I believe that calling black people "Oreos" because they speak properly is awful. It's is not that they are "white inside." It is that they understand and know better. Educated is better, regardless of the color of our skin. Jannelle Monae is a GREAT example of it and I applaud her--and you. :)
You've seen her type before?? No you haven't!! She is one of a kind. And she will NOT commit suicide because she is strong and knows she has a responsibility to her fans.
She's articulate and intelligent... not for a "black girl," but in general. Black, white, or otherwise she speaks beautifully and expresses herself quite well. :)
She is so smooth and so stylish. How much brass do you need to just start your own label? Also, so down to earth speaking on "this is my uniform." What a cool lady.
I hope she will throw a try at all the songclassics of billie holliday, ella fitzgerald and nina simone and others. Her voice is endless and limitless in whats possible! Now i know what the Motown executives felt when Michael jackson walked in one day!
LOL please look it up, there is a Kansas City, KS and I've lived here my whole life, not only that, I went to school with Janelle in KANSAS CITY, KANSAS. LOL
It's not just you. I had an African American friend in her late sixties refer to someone black and well-spoken as "trying to sound white". Well, I'm Italian and technically not white, come from immigrants who don't speak perfect English yet I do, and it is something to be proud of.
@UTubeuzername84 I really don't understand how her music could disappoint you, unless you were intent on insisting that she only make certain sounds that you are familiar with (i.e. programmed to accept)... radio hit type songs. She is deeper than that... Her music is already "stepped up" above basically everything you hear in mainstream music...
"Well" (and this is only my perspective) it's because here in central Illinois you'd have to look long and hard to find ANY articulation from the(norm) toothless backwoodsy clodhoppin farm boys...About Anything.Janelle Monet is so talented she makes me cry, truly a "gift from god"to the rest of us.Go girl.
@TheMvpgirl23 Monolithic means that we don't all as black people have the same life experiences. Just like other races we experience different things that affect how we see other people and the world around us. For example we are not all from the hood, born to a single mother growing up poor and spent time in a gang doing crime. Even though this is what mainstream media tells us others in tv shows, movies and even some books that is only one experience in a vast rainbow of black people.
@uhohitsMiKEY I AGREE A MILLION PERCENT!!!!!!! She's a talented performer(interesting image kinda Grace Jones meets David Byrne). She's not groundbreaking or even exciting at all. Half her uptempo music sounds B-52-type of crap.I'm from the late 70's early 80's era.If she was around back then she'd be seen as exactly as she really is:a OK artist.
I believe that also Janelle Monae is the future of music. There is something so special about her where I find find myself liking her as a regular person. She's this big star but I feel I could have a authentic conversation with this woman and I wouldn't feel star struck at all.

I could listen to just her talk forever!!! She's smart, classy, sexy, and talented all together! Plus she lets her roots define her and keep her humble!!!

LOL please look it up, there is a Kansas City, KS and I've lived here my whole life, not only that, I went to school with Janelle in KANSAS CITY, KANSAS. LOL
there is nothing wrong with TRYING to look smart if you actually are smart.....people be hating on other people that just want to better themselves.
Talent !
janelle! yes girl go ahead
@Morganlr528 It's not limited to black people, it's all people who shouldn't be afraid to be themselves
@bubberdub ok! she is very young, but yet she seem to have an old soul. she seem very wise
It's not just you. I had an African American friend in her late sixties refer to someone black and well-spoken as "trying to sound white". Well, I'm Italian and technically not white, come from immigrants who don't speak perfect English yet I do, and it is something to be proud of.
