When megaladon went extinct, the mighty levyiatan also went extinct, as did many baleen whales and most importantly a lot of phytoplankton went extinct. The ocean currents are beleived to have changed, changing climate and causing a disruption in the food chain.
There was a similar extinction during the cretaceous, while land animals flourished the oceans had a mass extinction where the mightiest ocean dwellers ever, the mighty ichthyosaurs, went extinct, with only 1 known species holding out for several more tens of millions of years until the meteorite cleaned slate.
