Many thanks, Paul (and others), and from Joel as well. The guitar and mandolin complement each other beautifully and works such as this one, originally for violin and guitar, translate very well. There is a large repertoire for these instruments and their predecessors, and a lot of people are playing them in many countries.
My longtime friend shared this exact audio to me when she was still alive. She converted the video to mp3. I never bothered to look at the title, what was important to me was it was in my playlist. I was the one who influenced her to listen to classical music. Looking back, I am shocked that it is actually a Paganini piece. Everytime I hear this in my playlist I remember her.
Wow, I just stumbled upon this great vidclip, and I listened to it 3 times, and put it on 3 folders, so I couldnt lose it. This duo is just perfect!!!!
WOW! Marissa, you have put Australia to the top of my bucket list! Though I have one foot in the grave, I hope when I’m being carried into the Terra Ferma, I will be hearing your majestic Mandolin! As a previous Mandolin artist myself (Started in 1946), It makes me want to my break out my Violin and accompany you! I still think the Mandolin is the most phenomenal string apparatus man/women ever developed! Thanks a million for the beautiful, Happy Holidays, I’ll will remember! God Bless!
You two are just fantastic. Marissa you have opened my ears to a new instrument (I've never really listened to a Mandollin in this context before). And Joel, you are such a gifted guitarist (b.t.w. I love the sound of your guitar). Thank you both for sharing your gifts and talents with the wider RUclips community. I shall keep listening to your music whilst I complete my work tonight.
Bravo you two! So well done! Marissa you have a captivating and graceful presence that complements the fact you let others see how the music touches you, move through you. I cannot give enough praise. Wish I can play mandolin, but my fingers are too big. Suites my classical guitar just fine.
You are a wonderful musician, Marissa. I have listened to your performance of other compositions in other youtube videos and find your playing very expressive. I used to be a violin player for many years and stopped music playing altogether until this spring...I just started to learn to play the mandolin and your playing really inspires me to pursue my mandolin playing! Now I just need to find myself a guitar player to practice duets...
I believe that the mandolin was actually Paganini's first instrument as a youngster. Correct me if I'm wrong. I performed this on guitar w/ a wonderful violinist named Derek Reeves back in 1993.
What a challenge to interpret a piece for violin, which can play a continuous note because it’s played with a bow, for the mandolin, which has little sustain because it is plucked and has such a short scale length! You did a fabulous job of it! As wonderful as your playing was, I found myself equally impressed with his playing and it is clear you are enjoying yourselves.
Hi...we are considering a recording session, and hopefully will get the time to do it soon. To do one properly involves a lot of time and rehearsal, and other things like work and study take precedent. For the moment we are enjoying our performances.
By the way, Marisa, try to find on the Internet some data on the mandolins made by the famous Croatian luthiers (father and son) Velimir and Antonio Zwirn (S. M. Gilg workshop) of Zagreb, I think that their mandolin 'Croatica' would perfectly suit your talent.
PERFEITO. COMO FILHO DE GUITARRISTA DOU MEUS PARABENS A DUPLA
Thank you so much for your comments, Oysta. Paganini wrote so much good music for the violin with guitar and it plays well on the mandolin. I use down-strokes where necessary for emphasis in the melody line, and alternate strokes for colour and tremolo as appropriate. Regards from Marissa.
Hi Gregg..... music is to be enjoyed as well as performed. Why not do try to do both at the same time? Being comfortable with the piece helps a lot, of course ;-)
I've been learning to play mandolin and I started by being told the correct way to hold the pick was to make a fist so that the full power of the forearm is used instead of just the muscles of the index finger. But I notice the mandolin here is open handed. Are both methods acceptable? Or is it based on the style of music (classical compared to blue grass)?
What’s acceptable is her clear mastery of her instrument, which includes knowing which technique to use to elicit the sound the composer and interpreter intended. When starting to play any instrument, a good teacher will help you develop a solid foundation of basic techniques. You will need to become competent in those before you can learn more challenging things. This is no different from any other skill, be it playing an instrument, skiing, hitting a golf ball, performing surgery or laying bricks. Build your skills on a solid foundation of basics.
Two fantastic musicians playing magnificent music.

So cool! I didn’t know until today that Paganini loved guitar! Also, how fantastic is this performance! Marissa has so much character! Bravo!

I always found ornaments on the mandolin to be incredibly funny sounding. I love mandolin!
You should release some of these wonderful pieces to iTunes. I would spend money to be able to hear them when I like.
totally happy making, thanks guys
You both are fantastic players and artists. Bravo!!!

felicitaciones a la joven, toca con estilo, esta pieza es difícil para la mandolina, por la tensión de las cuerdas; se entienden muy bien ambos, saludos.
Great playing!
Am amused that the opening of the slow movement sounds like Albinoni's adagio which Paganini cannot have possibly have known.
Just wonderful thank you so much!
Aparte de la buena interpretación , el sonido tan particular y agradable de la mandolina .
Lindo demais!! Saudações do Brasil!!
