I hit my 20s when this song came out and it filled the dance floors in Brisbane, Australia. I t was definitely when her music improved (not saying it wasn't good before this), but it really did just improve from this song onwards. Love this.
Common phrase in England - love this song. It’s a classic and one of her best. It was the first video when Kylie went from girl next door to ‘sexy’. And you’re right, she is known as the nicest person in pop without a single story of being a diva - an extremely likeable person and, even though she’s Australian, she’s a national treasure for us British.
You’re definitely understanding the song correctly. This is along with so many of her songs are actually so dark hidden on a dance track - which is quintessentially what disco is - she stripped down a lot of her songs on an album to expose that sadness. She has this duality of happiness and also vulnerability contradicted by a darkness and longing. I love that you guys are picking up on this and it isn’t just disposable pop as the world originally thought.
This was peak SAW production. By this point they started showing some class. Didnt stop Kylie parting ways with them but even so I think she learned a lot going forward.
@@Sanchordia I knew she was signed to saw.i also was pretty sure it was her Eurovision song but couldn't be assed at the late hour I was commenting to Google it. Ta for the confirmation 🙂
Kylie is indeed known as one of the most professional, most down to earth, nicest people in pop. That’s some accomplishment with a career approaching 40 years and the incredible level of success she’s had. This single was the first of Kylie-era defining run of 4 from her Rhythm of Love album in which she shed her this far sweet, girl next door image. Better the Devil You Know, Step Back in Time, What Do I Have To Do and Shocked.
Another classic pop song produced by the legendary hit factory Stock Aitken and Waterman. The British producer team was THE BEST. They wrote and produced so many hits for Kylie, Rick Astley, Bananarama, Donna Summer, Jason Donovan and many other artists in the years 1986-1993. I think we need some Stock Aitken Waterman top 5 weeks.
This was the first song of hers she had some kind of input and change in how she was produced. This song got me through all of my GCSEs. We say “Better the Devil you know” over here a lot in the UK. It’s about a one sided love when someone’s obsessed with the other and they are a bit of a player.
This was the point where Kylie wanted to drop her good-girl-next-door image and went for a more sexy look and sound. She received critics but she knew what she was doing. Great song.
Better the devil you know. PROVERB it's wiser to deal with an undesirable but familiar situation than to risk a change that might lead to an even worse situation. "any other man might be as unpleasant to live with-better the devil you know"
This song was a creative turning point in Kylies career when she was starting to take more control over career. In doing so, she co-wrote the track with SAW, but also while in Australia, she apparently did the video off her own back, which was considered super sexy for Kylie at that time, without telling her label and just delivered it to them in a "I've done the video, here it is" style! While the video is great, the song is considered pop perfection by many critics.
It's a British phrase "better the devil you know than the devil you don't". It's meant to be bitter sweet. A melancholic undertone, quite common in British pop music, upbeat but with bitter sweet, slightly dark lyrics.
So when this video came out it was quite controversial as it was the beginning of SEXY KYLIE. Up until this song her videos were wholesome and very safe. This was the beginning of EVERYTHING!!! It debut on a current affairs show in Australia with a warning 🤷🏼
In Spanish we have the same saying: "Mas vale diablo conocido, que diablo por conocer." Hopefully this week will display Kylie's career better than the first one.
This was Kylie’s transition from soap star to ‘sexy’ Kylie. She was dating Michael Hutchings from band INXS and started on the journey to the Kylie we know today. On another note, I’ve been to one of her parties, danced with her and done shots with her. She’s so incredibly nice and down-to-earth.
The lyrics ARE dark! That's the whole point. It's a great contrast with dark lyrics and upbeat dance pop. It also marked the start of Kylie's musical maturity away from sweet 'cutesy' lyrics. It challenges your expectations about her. It also came after she had been dating Michael Hutchence from INXS who encouraged her to be more musically adventurous and present a sexier more adult oriented image.
My favourite early Kylie song!! Yes, I had it on vinyl :) Always makes me laugh the way she keeps flashing the ring she's wearing - it was Michael Hutchinson's from INXS LOL
This song brings back great memories. There is a gay club in London called Heaven and they used to play this song on Saturday at midnight, when the dance floor exploded with balloons and confetti. I think they still do that (??).
My favourite. Surprised you don't have the expression in the US. We definitely use in the UK - maybe it reflects our slightly pessimistic character; it's like 'the grass isn't always greener (on the other side)'. Or maybe it's a class thing, about being powerless eg at work but learning to handle a difficult powerful person to your satisfaction.
I feel sorry for you guys who missed this period in 1990 - Better The Devil You Know was the lead single from her third album Rhythm Of Love. This song is the ULTIMATE gay anthem - it's such a massive song & was the turning point in her career following the fluffy pop of the first two albums. The other singles from this album are also amazing - Step Back In Time, What Do I Have To Do & Shocked - a perfect run of singles. It's about time America has discovered how good Kylie is & what an incredible groundbreaking career she's had & she's still releasing amazing music. The true queen of pop.
There’s quite a few early Kylie hits that were deliberately engineered as having tragic lyrics that seem lifted out of a 1950s post-war ballad set to the modern upbeat pop of the 80s/90s (a few other big hits, “Hand on Your Heart” for example, continue this pattern). When you stop and actually read the lyrics to even “I Should Be So Lucky”, for instance, it’s properly sad! But I think the happy musical facade hiding the inner turmoil is part of what made them big hits, particularly in the gay community. She revisits a lot of them twenty-five years later on the “Kylie: Abbey Road Sessions”album, but strips them back to just her voice and minor-key orchestration, and they become different listening experiences entirely!
I think the song is a moment in time of any coming of age when experiencing relationships in 1990 ha. The reality is nothing is perfect and it is an unattainable goal however in reality the pain when someone cheats and you're young you do tend to forgive and forget until you begin to love yourself which for many can take a few bad ones to get a good one.
She performed this in a classical, ballad style as part of her 25th anniversary campaign and the message of the song comes across, intentionally, as really sad and sombre.
Youre right about the music industry and tye arts in general. Im a classical musician and theres so many good musicians, if people enjoy being in your company and making music with you, you are more likely to do well. The annoying people tend not to last long unless they are rudiculously talented or already famous.
'Better The Devil You Know’ is a common phrase in most English speaking countries. It is used to warn people to be sure of making a change before the change is made. Everyone has faults… it is like saying, "are that persons really that bad? “ The verses acknowledge that the love wasn’t perfect but no one is perfect so I will take you back again. 1990 was a great year for dance pop in Europe (and Australia).
Lyrics written are from the point of view of someone young and madly in love with someone who's not the best for you, but you just want them back. we have all been there.
She does indeed seem very likable. It's like she embodies both being cool and young while having a genuine grown up almost motherly vibe to her. No wonder the gays were there from the start.
It’s a saying in Australia Also this song came out about time when she first met INXS (in excess) lead singer fellow Australian Michael Hutchence. Who was a great singer songwriter who when he died in his thirties devastated Kylie Ontop of that Kylie has gone through breast cancer, so for her to be so positive after going thru crap just shows what a great person she is When the song came out in Australia I was always told that this song was written by the songwriters about how Kylie considered herself “a little devil” in regards to her relationship with Michael Hutchence and at same time Michael wrote a hit INXS song called “suicide blonde” about Kylie’s hair dye name Both songs came out in 1990. INXS song was a hit in the US as well as obviously Australia, UK etc If you want to watch it, INXS perform it in front of over 70,000 fans at Wembley. They both made a beautiful looking couple, she gorgeous as always and he not only had very good looks he was a great front man who oozed sex appeal
The fulkl saying is: "Better the devil you know... than the devil you don't" Is said when you think it is wiser to deal with someone or something familiar, although you don't like him/her/it than to deal with someone or something you don't know that might be worse.
Maybe at that age in our lives we are still hopeful someone will change when you invite them back but as we get older we learn it sometimes doesn't work....
Sure, the message of this song didn't age well, but it's still a dilemma that lots of people face... Stay with what you know, even if it's bad - or take a risk on something that could be worse.
Better the Devil You Know mean: you would prefer to have contact with or do business with a person you already know, even though you don't like them, than with a person you don't know.
Producers/songwriters Stock Aitken Waterman wrote this song for Kylie, as a hint to go back to 'the devil' she already knows, her ex, singer/actor Jason Donovan instead of 'the devil' she doesn't know very well, her new boyfriend at the time, lead singer of INXS Michael Hutchence... :O
Maybe the reason why this song was never successful in the US is because they just don't get the meaning of the title (as people do in the UK or Australia) and they thought it was something related with the devil or something like that (you know, americans and religion...) By the way, we have a similar phrase in Spanish: Es mejor malo conocido que bueno por conocer 🙂
While Kylie's albums were successful internationally, in the US they weren't. Her first album _Kylie_ went Gold in the US, but her follow-up didn't and suffered from poor sales, so she was dropped by her US label. It wasn't until her 2001 single _Can't Get You Out of My Head_ was a huge global hit (including the US), that she was finally able to release another album there, in this case with _Fever_ . Her subsequent albums in the US have done either alright/ok/bad, but since physical sales aren't King anymore, it's all about streaming now and Americans are discovering her more everyday, especially since _Padam Padam_ was a hit on TikTok.
I'm quite unusual in that my favourite Kylie era is 90s era like this. Rhythm of love and let's get to it are both my favourite albums of her I'm not keen on her latest stuff as I feel like her voice has gone quite squeaky. You should check out the ballad if you were with me now it really Showcases her older style sultry low voice

The saying is pretty common in Australia, more so used by those that'd be 70 plus now, I never took it as dark as you guys went with it, it's often said off the cusp and I think it probably just reflects the differing times that they grew up in, you know you never got divorced, that sort of thing. Kylie's only a few years older that me so I doubt that she would have taken it in a really dark way, but, she is singing the lyrics so maybe she did think a bit deeper about it, unlikely given the vibes of the song.
