Am a native speaker and have studied in the US, doctoral level at a large research university. Now am prof in another country. I'd say these are very helpful lessons for understanding US English. However, keep in mind that pronunciation and expressions vary quite a bit even within the US itself. You'll hear "Uh huh" a lot in the Midwest. It means, "I acknowledge what you're saying and you're welcome." In Texas, you might hear a drawl and expressions like, "Y'all come back, now". This means , "Thanks for your patronage. Please visit us again." The most important thing to remember is if you speak clearly -- even with a slight accent and without knowing the aphorisms presented in this video -- it will be OK, especially in a university where people are from all over the world, or in a large company with many highly qualified people. You do not have to sound like an American, but it helps to be able understand what people are saying. If you really want to sound like a local, listen very carefully and speak often. This is how kids acquire a language. If you write English very well, don't lose this skill!! It is extremely valuable in professional and academic settings, particularly today where people rely on auto correct and often text. Good written English is more valuable than pronunciation, be it for university admissions or a job. Even some Americans do not write well if they haven't attended university. Practice reading and listening on good news sources like the New York Times (see in particular the comments section of articles and compare the quality of written English to that on RUclips or Fox News) or NPR. Get into the habit of proof reading all your emails before sending, without using auto correct. Check that they are very concise and clear. That's very important in US English and can be very different from what you're used to if Chinese is your first language.

If you know IPA, the vowel in "sugar" is /ʊ/ the same one as in "put," "took," or "should." The lips ARE a bit rounded but not as much as in the /uw/ as in "food." That being said, these tiny details of pronunciation are not as important as vocabulary and other aspects of language that result in real fluency 😀
