- Here is a look at a TFE-731 turbofan engine from one of our Hawker private jets. This engine will be going onto the airplane in the next few days. I hope you enjoy!

So that's the difference between Turbo Fan and Turbo Jet, thanks for sharing
Turbo Fan, as he mentioned, a percentage of the air moved by the fan bypasses the core, and exits the back as thrust. In a Turbo Jet, 100% of the air that enters the engine via the front, enters the core of the engine, and is combusted with fuel to make thrust. There is also a thing called a Turbo Prop, which has a large propeller much like a piston engine aircraft, where the exhaust from this engine is used to turn a power turbine, which connects it to a propeller. Only a small percentage of the exhaust leaving the engine is actually thrust on a Turbo Prop.

We got great service especially once we switched to Mobil-Jet 254 oil. SOAP checks always come back very clean.
You should show them the surge-bleed valve and oil coolers in the bypass duct and it's associated solenoid pack.

Thanks Sean! That was really interesting! I never knew too much about geared turbofan engines. I did read that the bypass ratio is 2.8:1. Also that the fan is driven by a gearbox off the compressor, so the 2 are separate. very interesting! 8)

I have a stage 8 compressor fan from a B-52. Those fan blades have some slop because they expand as they get hot. I wish I was in the office more because I like seeing all of that stuff!
Great vlog as always! The Fokker F-28 had the RR Spey engine and it was just under 10` pounds of thrust, and it seated 65 pax and had a Max range of just over 3h with MTOW. That was 28` metric tonnes I think. To the 737-200 it was a F-16! Lol!
Very cool! I built these bad boys at the Garrett plant at Sky Harbor in Phoenix. One heck of an engine! There is one on display at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington. Came to Garrett from a manufacturing engineering background while building AGT-1500 gas turbines (Abrams M1 main battle tank) and T-53 engines (Bell Huey) while at the U.S. Army Engine Plant in Stratford, CT and working for Lycoming. Good times! Our Engines Suck and Blow at the same time! ;-) Arrived at Lycoming in Stratford after building Sikorsky CH-53 and S-76 helicopters down the street (same street!) in the same town. Seems like a hundred years ago (!).

The fire wire(detection loop) is actually filled with gas, and the expansion of this gas when heated is what detects fire/excessive heat

Your best bet is to put those things back in the crate and sell them, take the Hawker and send it to the scrap yard! You would be far better off in one of those Falcons in the hangar. Cool video for those who don't get to see this stuff. Hate the Hawker, pain in the ass to work on, its great airplane for the guy sitting in the back but not the maintenance guys!

In the previous video I think you mentioned that these engines were on loan while your's were being overhauled. Would you be able to share the cost of an engine brand new, how much it costs to overhaul and how much an engine on loan costs?

Got to do an other type rating after +10 other ones from hawker 400, CRJ, AVRO,PHENOM, XLS, CITATION I , II, BOEING, CHALLENGER….and your video is full of informations for professional like me as we are able to see and locate stuff, so for the profession, thanks a lot for what you do. you participate worldwide to the familly, to the training and ultimatly to the safety of everyone. you are not only having fun with your corporate job, but you deserve a safety aware. Of it is not a formal training but it tick a lot of these « where is this stuff box and how does it look really » wich are not allways cover by conventional type rating training.

Jet engines amaze me. They're TINY for the amount of power they produce! Also, EXTREMELY expensive unfortunately. Lots of high dollar metals, all precision cut like a fine watch. I'd love to put them in everything I own otherwise, lol. Great stuff, Shaun!
They are also very reliable, and quite efficient as engines go. But have limited uses, they are built to operate within a small performance window, and are slow to react to throttle changes.
As they found out with the Abrams Tank, it sounds like a good idea, but for most automotive uses, impractical. If you have a constant power output system that runs for long periods, a turbine is an excellent power generator.
@@tedferkin - Definitely not practical, but the cool factor is way up there. If I only had the money to play, lol. :)

Is that Dassault 900 in your company? And if so when are you going to get rated on it.
Just another thing to add, The silver box on the top right of the engine is the ignition exciter box which converts 28 volts (battery power) to about 3,000 volts to the igniters to 'pop' for engine starting.
1:20 that box on the top? It must be like a capacitator similar to a microwave oven

Putting tape on that spinner is a very good Idea. That spinner is extremely sharp. I hit my head on one while doing a bird strike inspection. I probably should have gotten a few stitches.

Is it my imagination or are there fewer of your vids being posted these days? Understand, of course, that your job duties come first!!! Anyhow, we recently had a great air show in Topeka, Kansas for the first time in over 20 years. Got to see a MiG-17 and "Doc", one of only two operational B-29's in the world. Only disappointment was that we didn't have either the USAF Thunderbirds or the Navy Blue Angels. They did have a civilian acrobatic team though and they were pretty good. (Maybe you can come next year and do a few maneuvers...? Hint Hint) I thought I was set up for my "Discovery Flight". Then I learned that our local GA airport, Billard, is undergoing some ownership changes and right now there is nothing available in which to train pilots. Ugh - looks like I'll be a groundling forever.).:

Are the wing and tail leading edges protected with bleed air too, or are they heated in some other way?
From what I've read it's a TKS liquid de-icing and anti-icing system. I presume becase it would be difficult to pipe the hot air insulated through the aircraft, as I believe it starts at couple of hunded degrees even before the fuel burn.

Hey Sean ! On the hawker What happens if you have an engine rated at 20,000 pounds of thrust at the max on a plane like yours would that make the stability of the airplane or balanced or off balance with so much power?
When flying straight and level the thrust of the engine exactly equals the drag on the airframe. All aircraft have a set of normal speeds and a never to exceed speed (Vne). Exceeding this speed you become an experimental test pilot. So if you double the engine thrust capability it doesn't matter as long as you don't go faster then Vne. Of course you just paid a lot more money for a more powerful engine that you can only use at half throttle.

I heard that the pilots have gas pedals; one for each engine and that is how you turn.

Hi Matt. Pilot here there is no gas pedal on a jet but it is called a thruster and that’s what controls the power to the engines either on a small jet or a 747. The petals on a jet control the rudder As well as the brakes when you press them differently when you press the petals on the top they are the brakes when you press them forward that controls the rudder right or left when you’re taxing on the ground unlike private planes such as a Cessna 172 do you have to control that staring with your feet because they don’t have a tiller

What exactly is the clicking sound when the engine spins? I hear it on ramps and I’ve always wondered if it were Bearings.
that's the fan blades jostling in their slots. if you get up close to one you'll see that there's just a little bit of wiggle (by necessity) room. it sounds like it would be horrendous, but it's perfectly legit.

maybe to a miniscule degree, but it's more a matter of rotational force that "tightens" them into place. as the engine spools up they all lock into place and the clacking all but disappears.
