@user-bv1lk8nv9p whats even crazier is a guy called chris birdsong on here who does amazing sheet metal and frame work on classic cars without a rotisserie, frame machine, or body table. astonishing work if you're interested in that. he shows everything he does too

Hell yeah This VS That! Idk how many times I’ve mentioned it but I think the truck would be a badass episode or if they do like a fast truck special like they did for Hondas
Great Video. After doing much welding/fabrication in my garage, I have learned that it is way easier to do it outside to keep your shop clean. A standard pop-up awning saves you in the rain and sun.
Your content would be top of the list of automotive if you’d just hire a filmer/editor to give these some flavor! Love the content and your technical acumen is best of the best bro!
There’s a few ways I would have made that repair on the frame, and none of them are the way you did it, and that’s the amazing thing about the internet. Getting to see different ways that different people do things. Great job.
I would be welding a thick grade 8 washer with the proper sized hole as a doubler plate on the outer side of the A arm hole you corrected. Usually means using the next smaller washer and drilling that to the desired size. Tougher steel than mig welded repair and will increase the load bearing area.
Hey LT, your throw away line @ 4:35 reminded me of one my other top channels I follow. Its by another Utah You Tuber named Mike Patey. @@LawrenceTolman thank you for painting it, I feel powder coating is very overrated and doesn't hold up. I have a tiltbed PJ trailer that is two years old, powder coated black and already rusty.
@@kylechrist mass production powder coat is usually pretty cheaply done. Something done custom or by a specialty shop is usually a better quality job. Prep work has alot to play in it surviving also.
@@kylefitzherbert9381 I won't argue that, I just really have a bad taste in my mouth for powder coating. A quality paint is still cheaper and can be done at home without having to hire someone, haul your project, etc
I’m doing this AWD swap to my Stroked RCSB right now. I’m actually Z-ing in a Denali front frame half. I have DJM control arms and Atomic mounts for Coilovers now. What do you suggest I use to move the shocks over? Can i still use the same 2wd control arms on the 4x4 Frame if I weld on new Tabs?
I did about the same thing a few years ago with my stepside short bed and I spent a stupid amount of time filling every unused hole in the frame and boxing everything in, I had it powdercoated and it looks great and all but I debate if it was worth the time
Misalignment of the relative points can make for all sorts of unsolvable misbehavior at the track… Proper geometry is critical… With that in place…you can make adjustment
LT, i plan to convert to 4wd on my 2001 silverado 5.3. I have a junkyard 4wd 2002 trailblazer frame and drivetrain. It has coil springs from the factory already. I might try to extend it a bit to fit the silverado cab. What do you think?
Since the ugly truck is on a diet, you should swiss cheese the frame and dimple die the holes. In theory, done right, the dimples might even stiffen the frame but likely it will just be lighter and about just as stiff.
I was coming in to comment the same thing. Very surprised he’s going with traditional mounts and not a front and rear motor plate. Those will keep everything in place better, and tie the frame together.
Lt, I meant to ask, was there any temptation to go with a 3/4 ton frame for this build? Or is everything one-off so half ton was fine? I think it's gonna be sick
a 3/4 ton frame would be stronger, and would also let me run the bigger front diff, but its also heavier, and would require 8 lug wheels. Plenty of guys are building fast 4wd stuff with a 1500 frame, so I am hoping it will work out for me as well
Lawrence, what do you do for a living to have both the time and money to do these wild builds? I'm trying to figure out the secret so I can perhaps do it myself one day and finally own a cool car or truck.

It's an awful lot of work to add a bunch weight to the wrong end of a drag vehicle. It's your vehicle and I appreciate your dedication to doing things that don't make sense though.
You mind as well build the whole truck from ground up. Please and leave ugly truck the way it is, maybe raffle it if u have no use for it. But if ur building the truck from scratch. I ask why not just get a junk yard body cab and bed wouldn’t be hard to come by.
And LT is doing all of this without a lift. Hats off to him for that 👍🏁🇺🇲
Proving to all the internet whiners that you can't do cool stuff without a lift.

That looks like a knuckle for a 07-13 1500. Those didn’t use torsion bars and the frames were the same between the 2wd’s and 4wd’s. Slick setup

I actually am planning on doing just that. Barnes 4wd makes some weld washers I have ordered
Do you think it would be worth it to blast and powder coat the frame? It would make it perfectly clean and protect it forever
Brilliant idea.....
It would be very easy to do it without the body sitting on it.
Sure, if he ever drove it on the street. Which he doesn't.
Right, particularly in states with lots of salt brine.

Yes, it’s gonna get painted once all the fab work is done, probably satin ack

Wicked fab makes a long travel bracket for the coilovers…

Enjoyable video as always.
May i suggest you tighten up the control arm bolts and try to move the suspension up and down?
U do this in your garage that motivation
I'm wondering if it would have been easier and stronger to put in a u-joint type axle in the front to eliminate the cv axles? Time will tell.

anything can be done, but if you want to convert to 4wd it will be much easier to just buy a 4wd frame from the junkyard that already fits your truck
Did you by chance, aquire that yellow claw hammer from Matt's Off Road Recovery? Asking for a friend. Good stuff LT.!
Nice 👍👍!!
quick ? did you check the rod for straightness prior to all of this work ?
As my Grand Dad told me when I was a kid, "You can do it right or you can do it again."
Are LCA bolts n perfect line to begin with.? From factory can u put rod Thur frame LCA then frame then over to otherside..?
I’m theory, yes they should be. But I’ve never tested that theory
Since the ugly truck is on a diet, you should swiss cheese the frame and dimple die the holes. In theory, done right, the dimples might even stiffen the frame but likely it will just be lighter and about just as stiff.
Not using Wicked Fabs adjustable upper coilover mount?
I have a t case and front differential out of a 2003 awd suburban
Hey LT where is that welding table from?
its the 2x3 foot model from weldtables.com
What happened to shifting the motor to the rear?
Spends thousands on engine and suspension parts, won't spend $50 on a Harbor Freight grinder...... I feel that 😂
Can anyone tell me what parts were used? Upper and lower control arms, knuckles, and coilovers?
With 1700hp I would think you would be doing a motor plate system?
I was coming in to comment the same thing. Very surprised he’s going with traditional mounts and not a front and rear motor plate. Those will keep everything in place better, and tie the frame together.
Try the Barnes4WD coilover mounts
Who knows maybe you'll get in the next gymkhana like cleetus
Where did you find the aluminum spindles?
I think a big block swapped four-wheel drive ugly would be pretty badass against a diesel truck on this vs that.
HEY! You need to set up a P.O. Box where we can send you stuff!
Going to remove the plastic body molding? Would Look better and might weigh a pound or two less
