Hi Dom..Great Video!! For those just learning to weld there is a series of wire known as flux cored, which allows you to weld without argon/c02. the wires come in diameters of .025"-.045". They are a bit messy in that you have to chip the flux off the weld and wire brush it clean post weld. It also leaves deposits of spatter near the weld joint, but this can be controlled by applying nozzle dip around the joint. Gas produces a much cleaner weld, but flux cored may be an alternative for some. Cheers!!

My old chap had an Eng Co from 1972 to 1991. I worked for him from 1976 to 1979. He taught me how to use Lathes, Mills, Folders, Guillotines, Pillar Drills, Fly presses and MIG, TIG and brazing. Set me up to do my own DIY stuff with Motorbikes later. This video explains welding very well.

That is not the question I asked. I am only concerned with testing for color shade blindness. I am someone who fixes everything but has to leave the welding to someone who can see it. I was not allowed to be retrained for electronics because I did not see the colors correctly, only I managed extremely well in that world to circumvent that by measuring. Therefore I also have the question for that doctor which color was black. Something that burns turns black but what color was on the resistor before it burns. Something that I could not see but was able to figure out.

oooh I love, love the purple on that Parweld gear - I wish I could get their gloves and helmet over here in Canada. I'd happily switch to purple from the red's and blue's if I could (sorry Lincoln and Miller fans, hah)! Well, maybe not for the actual power supply, though that one sure looks a lot more modern than the machines I use (but water-cooled TIG ftw!).
One thing I don't think I saw you cover is... cover up all skin! You mentioned the bright light from the arc and your eyes, but the same goes for any exposed skin; you'll get a terrible "sun" burn from the very intense UV light given off by the arc.

    M
During my first day at Wellingborough Tech College in 1982 our tutor demonstrated arc welding to us all, and then told us we'd never forget why he'd just used a welding helmet. And he was right, the lesson that I've never forgotten is that arc-eye really hurts.... for several days!! (it's basically getting sunburn on your eyeballs, do not try this at home!!!) Can't imagine that kind of lesson would be legal these days, probably just as well! Great vid, great channel, thanks Dom :)

    Hi Dom,
Love your channel and your involvement with the Repair Shop. Just a couple of things
The negative is not always connected to the work piece, look at your tig torch.
You said you always use a foot pedal and not all welders have that facility.
Tig comes in 3 arc variations scratch, lift and high frequency and a beginner needs to be aware.
    Hope these points help.

Great stuff again Dom. To add to your list of types of welding there is also friction welding. MIG does not need a gas bottle if you use flux core welding wire and the polarity of your MIG machine is reversed, ie the negative clamp become positive and the gun goes from positive to negative.

  • @alifetomake
    @alifetomake 3 года назад +4

Hello! Welder here! Good introduction! There are useful apps to help find wire speed/voltage for the MIG depending on what to weld, and in which position. With normal wires (not flux-cored), you're supposed to aim the torch a little more in the direction you're going to. At least, that's how I learned!

Hi Dom....i enjoyed this video very informative and well presented so thank you for posting.....i wanted to improve my welding so i attended evening classes the City and Guilds part 1 certificate in welding studies was a 2 year course, and it was 2 evenings a week, 1 evening was the practical session, and the other evening a theory session both with exams. The first year was gas fusion welding with oxy acetylene and you had to complete various test pieces which would then be destructively tested and then you were marked accordingly. The second year was then manual metal arc welding again test pieces had to be produced and tested.....my two instructors were brilliant and i learnt a great deal over those 2 years, one of the instructors was previously employed at BOC and was the person in the training films demonstrating the gas welding techniques. Have a good Easter i hope you get the opportunity to eat lots of chocolate eggs lol....best regards, Stefano.....

Can I add a few things, as you said when you put on the new helmet " thats much clearer" always keep the visor clean and replace the plastic guards regular, the better you can see, the better your welds. Keep the welding tips clean, use a tip dip or similar. Always use a quality wire, the better the wire the better and easier the weld. hope this helps

Love your video's ive always admired good welding I stick metal together when needed but wouldn't call it welding going to start playing again try and get better. I helped out in a blacksmith's shop as a lad usually when a farm machine of my dad's needed repair I would go to help as the goffer, learnt so much from the smithy he was a true craftsman. He wielded up a multi branch exhaust manifold off my Rover with a stick welder, he did such a neat job and it didn't crack again. Everyone else said it was not repairable.

On the one hand, any amateur can have a go at MIG welding and by trial and error, produce acceptable results. On the other, there's no substitute for an in depth understanding of first principles (with oxy-acetylene welding, stick etc.), so as soon as the colleges are open again post-covid, I would urge anyone considering buying a MIG welder to sign up for a few weeks of evening classes. I studied "C&G 165 Welding Craft Practice" in the early 1980s as an apprentice and it was invaluable to me.

Great channel Dom. Just a quick tip for newbies when you attach the regulator to the bottle crack open the bottle valve for a second to clear any crap from the valve as this can ruin the regulator. Been welding for over 50 years now and I cannot stress enough the importance of eye protection. Had arc eye as we call it 4 times and it burns the eye and it feels like sand at the back of your eye and can end up with a visit to hospital. BE CAREFUL.

You have to revere the coach builders of old who had only oxygen-acetylene gas welding at their disposal. Dom, search youtube for a video by William Longyard "Gas Welding Aluminium Kent White + bonus." The bonus is a former Aston Martin panel man fusion welding together two halves of a panel. No filler rod, you'll love it.

Very nicely done Dom 😁. Probebly a bit late now but a shout out for gasless mig could help some "part time hobby" welders like myself. I use flux core wire on my cheap (ish) Clarke machine. I was going to convert it to gas but for the "leaky cheap bottle" reasons you said, I decided against it. I just need to be able to pull out the welder and start. I have only used gasless in any of my RUclips videos. And the results are sufficient for "a quick welding task". Thanks for the video Dom... keep up the great work 😁👍

Thanks for this Dominic I opted for a flux core mig welder and to be honest I was ready to throw it through the garage door whilst working on my Landrover Series 2 restoration project and kept resorting back to my stick arc welder, turns out I was putting to much pressure on myself and needed to practice with loads of bits of scrap metal and get the wire speed turned down and always get a good clean earth clamp position and my welds have become 10x better and also brought a better light reacting mask and not the handheld one that came with the kit.

During the first lockdown I needed to attach metal solar panel brackets to the roof of my steel narrowboat, and seeing as no one was allowed to visit I bought a welder and a mate taught me how to weld via facebook messenger using pictures and videos... and just over twelve months later the brackets and panels are still on the roof!
The bit I struggle with is where I need to alter wire speed and voltage... maybe you could do a video explaining the basics how to tell when you need to alter those and whether a weld needs more or less voltage / a increase or decrease in wire speed.
Keep up the good work, and take care

Loving the channel Dom, I've been welding since I was 13! Ith stick welding That's over 40 years ago lol
I was completely self taught until my 20's when I was taken through coded welding for the place I worked.
Great informative video and I hope you really enjoy the new gear
Have a great day and best wishes

Hi Dom, yes, welding helmets. I have 20 years restoration under my belt, I also have cornea from welding. That's 'arc eye'. When I look up at a beautiful blue sky, I see black crows, bats, demons, floaters. Whatever you ant to call them. You will regret it, so yes, proper welding mask, correctly set up.
    Must, must, must!

Welding kit is another thing on my wish list hahahahah! 40 years ago I used to do some industrial stick welding, but I’d love to have a go at MIG and TIG.

Phew! That was a rapid tour! Really it’s impossible to cover the basics in one video, but you did well.
Hope they let you keep the machine..
I’d suggest perhaps one video on each of the methods, so we can see you doing just MIG, or just TIG, perhaps even some stick or gas welding - though not many home workshops have gas these days I guess. Thanks Dom. A good Sunday break from working in my garage. Les

Nice one Dom, I love welding and have learnt from practice. I would love to see some demos on MIG with various thickness material showing the difference voltage and speed make.

Brilliant overview. I used to like welding as part of my general apprenticeship with British Steel. It was before the MIG/TIG days, so oxy-acetylene or flux coated stick. I preferred oxy-acetylene, much more control with a filler rod in the other hand. They should let you keep that welder or offer a massive discount, it would be seen on The Repair Shop after all...
