Kevin Mitnick, famous former black hat hacker, demonstrates just how easy it is for a hacker to tap into your network and read your email. And he's doing it with a fiber optic network connection, not a simple and very non-secure CAT5x or CAT6x network wire. And he doesn't have to connect to the Internet, your network, or any outside resources to do this. He clamps onto a fiber optic "wire", opens Wireshark, and sniffs away your most guarded secrets.
Mitnick demonstrates in under five minutes how he could get near your network, set up a clandestine connection, sniff your network, grab your passwords, email, anything sent "over the wire" unencrypted, and disappear within minutes. And you'd never catch him doing it.

Normal phonecalls, sms, skype etc. don't use end-to-end encryption, and thus they will serve your private messages on a silver platter to any 3letter agency(as required by law).
That's a little beside the point, though, isn't it?
It's called sniffing. If you send an e-mail without encrypting it, it would stolen or if someone is in your internet like modem we call it hub, i would get stolen too. You have to use ethernet (switch) to stop sniffing but it's still possible to hack if you don't encrypt it. But some applications like NetCat, you can brute force and read the encrypted message.

The program is called Ethereal, there are a bunch of free an enterprise level software such as wireshark that does this, we actually use them to detect network issues, such as packet loss etc.

I think the main purpose of this was to demonstrate an optical fibre wiretap; he probably knows reading unencrypted email traffic is pretty easy.

you can. as long as the connection isn't encrypted you can see the data packages too but you Need to specify your wlan Interface as the Interface you would like to listen to (eventually you Need to activade promiscious mode additionally) right when you fire up wireshark. Also I've never done something with mails hacking before but if the mail itsself is encrypted via SSL you have no chances. Hope I could help you.EDIT: I don't remember right now but eventually you Need to perform a man in the middle Attack and and spoof the IP addresses of the victims and the Access Points arp tables.

tae mo WireShark comes as a pre-installed program in Kali Linux. If you're using windows you can transition to Linux with a dual boot for Windows 7, windows 10 is a bit of a dick about dual boots but supports Ubuntu which is another distro of Linux that doesn't come with WireShark. Haven't tried installing it on that OS yet... mmm... Good luck!

Yes, yes, very good. "This is what a fibre junction looks like" he says, pointing to an image on the screen of a laptop, that we do not see. Then he points to a cassette (which we also can't see clearly) and appears to only actually have one fibre connected to it - so it isn't carrying any data anywhere. Then he points to a "fibre tapping device", which is out of focus and is nowhere near the cassette. At no time do we get a clear view of the mess of wires and fibres on the table.

Furthermore I don't understand how is possible to capture the traffic with Wireshark from outside the company and so outside the LAN (maybe I misunderstood the meaning).
