I am listening to this and I'm not sure I understand the issue. 1st point; Walz was an acting command sergeant and didn't finish some degree and therefore technically was a master sergeant? 2nd point; he retired after 24 years, and could do so even after 20, but since the unit was going overseas he should have stayed? What, I mean who cares? I don't know, maybe I misunderstood something. Are people just overreacting?

I served, I deployed once to Iraq and three times to Afghanistan. I have NO problem with Governor Walz' service record. He served his country honorably, and he supported the mission I was deployed to. He had to leave his family and his country for a long time to do so. Not every soldier has to be in active combat. I will say the same of J. D. Vance, he also served honorably. I wish this election could be about their politics and not their service records. These attacks are profoundly disturbing to me, we should commend both men for their service.

OIF Veteran here. Walz is absolutely guilty of stolen valor. He is not a retired CSM, he never earned that rank, and worst of all, he abandoned his enlistment contract early to avoid deploying to Iraq like I did and so many other brothers and sisters in arms. I was within a year of my enlistment contract and I extended to deploy and ti serve. Then Walz disgraced the Army values by lying about his service and the way he left the service. He’s a liar and a disgrace.
After 10 years the reenlistment contract is indefinite. So after 20 years (15 years for medical) you can retire. He didn't abandon his contract. I retired after 21 years, The retirement process takes 9-12 months after you submit the retirement packet. A lot of us extended to deploy. I got E-6 and went indefinite. I wanted to make it to 20 years.

I’m admittedly not a recruiting specialist, but I extended for 1 year at a time 3 times in a row. Then I signed an actual re-enlistment contract for 6 years, as an E-6 with 10 years in, to get a bonus. There was nothing in my contract about it being “indefinite.” I know lots of other guys who signed re-enlistment contracts under similar circumstances to get bonuses for re-upping. Maybe there was an indefinite option (or maybe we’re talking about the same thing with extensions), but Walz re-upped for 6 years, and he did not serve those 6 years. And we know he didn’t just retire normally. We both know a CSM retirement is a big, celebrated deal. They don’t just disappear into “retirement” with no fanfare or ceremony under normal circumstances. I’m not trying to be a thorn here, but we who served all know plain as day something is up here and the story doesn’t support reality.

IF he served in a combat zone, he would have a Combat ribbon, or some medal showing he was serving in a combat zone. Having seen none in his biography, he NEVER deployed. The Army Commendation medal is like a participation ribbon (I have 5 myself) and the Achievement Medal is a medal given to ANY soldier who does not get in any trouble or is just a GOOD JOB medal (I have ALOT of these) so his record shows NOTHING of a combat tour, no combat service, no service in any war, no action, and he NEVER SAW IRAQ OR AFGHANISTAN, not even when his National Guard soldiers deployed. (I have seen every Governor but the California Governor, the Minnesota Governor, and the Pennsylvania Governor visit their State ran soldiers deployed over in the combat zones. The original Stolen Valor Act (2005) was overturned by the Supreme Court in 2012. In 2013, Congress passed a replacement bill which made Stolen Valor a crime *_if it was done to receive some tangible government benefit_* . Doing it for political advantage would not qualify. So, he's technically not breaking any law.

My SIL is retired guard and he was wounded in Iraq during that time. Some guardsmen never deploy but all are supposed to be ready to serve wherever they're sent. @QuiinGlobal

Stolen Valor is despicable!!!
Here's how it works: he was promoted to Command Sergeant Major (CSM/E-9). HOWEVER, in order to KEEP the rank, he had to go to and graduate from the Sergeants Major Academy within two years of his date of rank. For whatever reason, he failed to graduate from SMA. Therefore, he reverted back to the last grade held satisfactorily, which is Master Sergeant (MSG/E-8). So he may have worn the rank TEMPORARILY, but failed to complete the requirements to hold it permanently. Thus, his retirement was at the lower rank.
How did he advance from master sergeant to Command Sergeant Major without ever holding the rank of First Sergeant or Sergeant Major? I never heard of someone jumping 2 ranks like that.

@@emolachance MSG rank = 1SG. Both are E-8. You only hold the title and "rank" of First Sergeant if you are in that slot. Similar to Corporal vs Specialist. Both of those enlisted ranks are E-4, but only the CPL is considered an NCO (Non Commissioned Officer). Same pay, just different levels of responsibility.

He should be booed every time he is on stage until he leaves .
He was "frocked" to Command Sergeant Major (E-9) meaning his promotion was contingent on meeting future requirements in order for the promotion to become permanent. He failed to meet the required educational requirements to retain that rank. In those cases, you revert to your prior rank/pay grade in his case Master Sergeant (E-8). Just come clean but the longer he let's this fester the worse it will be for him.

Big difference in retiring as an E-8 MSG vs E-9 CSM. He knew he was not telling the truth.
It was a honest mistake by some PR guy on his first campaign. It happens.
He can not retire until he is 60 years old and starts drawing his retainer pension. It appears that he pulled strings to drop out of a Troop Program Unit (TPU) with a valid 6 year reenlistment commitment in force while the stop loss mandate was in effect. That froze all personnel in units from leaving even if enlistments has expired. However, his term of service was still valid with or without stop loss. Leaving under BFF influence would place him in the Individual Ready Reserve ( IRR) inactive but still subject to activation, many were involuntarily recalled during that time. Some of these soldiers were older and lower ranked than Walz was then .
Only a real dud, physically unfit or politically connected slacker was let out at that time. The dud was likely to be assigned to a lower priority non deploying unit but still was subject to activation.

It is really simple. Walz was in the National Guard. The Guard is an honorable outfit that essentially says, "You train in military tactics in your own backyard, but when we call you to serve in combat you show up and perform the duties you trained for." Walz took the paychecks and benefits from the NG for 24 years, but when his unit was called up, he decided to "retire." He didn't show up. Walz did not carry weapons of war in a war zone and for him or anyone else to claim he did is a disgrace.

What is left out is he put in his retirement papers before his unit was ordered to report for training and then deployment to Iraq. His unit received their alert orders for Iraq in July of 2005. Walz retired in May of 2005 and I am sure you are familiar with the process of retiring from the military. Walz would have had to put in his retirement papers several months before his actual retirement. He might have heard some rumors about a deployment before the official alert orders but he did put in for retirement several months before the actual alert orders came into the unit.

The CSM claim is a technicality which can be stated ether way, i suppose, but the other claim about carting a weapon in combat, or whatever he claimed is BS. You could argue, and I’d agree, that the statement “that I carried in war” is MISLEADING since it makes the listener believe he saw combat. But from a law perspective, he certainly has carried those weapons and the U.S. during his time of service was routinely engaged in warfare. Thus, he did carry “those weapons” in “war”. What he said, while misleading, is technically true.
