I grew up in the house right behind the cemetery on north 32nd St. I literally ran through this cemetery countless times as a kid and didn't have a clue how cool the history we had there. Thank you for all you do Micheal, so interesting! 💜💜💜

I worked from age 14 to 23 mowing/trimming this cemetery--it took three days and it was scorching hot in the summer. Near the Alden plot (the highest point) is a nice peaceful spot under a pine for napping. Our super caught us one day backs up to a gravestone beyond our normal break time, we pointed out the 99 degree heat and how fast we got it all done. I think we worked fast because of all the young service men early teens to twenties buried there, my coworker wouldn't mow the children's lot and I would usually start there working from opposing corners ending in the middle. I was startled and ran away from my mower a half dozen times by incoming A-10s, Hercules and Tomcat air base aircraft--the pilots would throttle up and buzz low to scare us. Thanks for the insight, the only information we had was that divots were "markers" of old graves where the records building had burnt down and the wooden markers had disintegrated--the divots were difficult to mow over but we could not fill them, only mow around and gently trim after.

I always enjoy hearing from people who serviced cemeteries. They always have such great stories! I fortunately only had a few small planes fly over me when I was there, but I did get a sense they were watching me.

@@MichaelDelaware I swear they told their buddies fly low throttle out--burrowing hornets are violent in late summer--I'd sprint 50 yards before I'd realized it was a Herc with all four props buzzing.

Our family (Wetzel) owned and operated Helmer Farm Nursery. They traded all the landscaping, including the evergreens in the cemetery for 22 lots for the family. They are located in the northwest corner of the cemetery. Thank you for posting this info.

I love family history and genealogy! In my research I've found several obituaries and I find it interesting that the obituaries in the 1800 through the 1990s all seem to list how long a person was Ill before they died. They even go as far to say what they died from and sometimes even what the attending doctor said about the death. I found an obituary for one of my ancestors that stated " died from pulmonary embolism, the doctor stated heat was a contributing factor" I find this simply fascinating! Obituaries now or nothing like they once were. I love your channel. And I truly enjoy learning so much history about my hometown. 💜💜💜

Yes it is very interesting to see the changes over the decades. Some periods of time, the obituaries are very brief, with no life history of the person, and others are very detailed. The very old ones did tend to go into detail about someones death, whereas more recent ones in the last thirty years they will talk more about the person's accomplishments. It is fascinating to see how obituaries have evolved.

💜 There were 3 very old cemeteries within walking distance of my home.(would take my 120 lb. Malamute for walks to them, or should I say, he walked me) Rosehill Cemetery (aka Nicholsville Cem. & Little Prairie Ronde Cem. est 1821) in Volinia Township Cass County MI, and Charleston Cemetery (est.1817) also in Volinia Township. (Charleston was once a town, nothing left but the cemetery), and Anderson Cemetery (locally known as "Murder Cemetery") in Decatur Township VanBuren County MI... Maybe do something on one of these 3? (or all 3?)

I love this individualist approach. Is there a way to form a state by state collective to help you and partner. Are you in Cemetery groups? This is genius. Please PM anytime

This one is in Calhoun County, and it is not Springfield Township, it is the city of Springfield.
