Before Hendrix guitarists were fighting against the tech of the time, trying to get the cleanest sound they could. Jimi came along and decided he could use the distortion and feedback, all the imperfections became part of his toolbox. After Hendrix it's unusual for anyone not to use distortion.
The Jimi Hendrix Experience ran as a band from October 1966 to June 1969. He continued to perform after that into 1970. Jimi died in September 1970 aged 27. In just 4 years he had changed the face, and sound, of rock music forever.

Jimi Hendrix is probably one of the reasons we have hard rock and heavy metal, as he brough another level to guitar playing based on the blues. He inspired so many guitar player of today, including Stevie Ray. Here's an earlier clip from 1967 with great footage and sound: ruclips.net/video/qFfnlYbFEiE/видео.html

Check out his first concert appearance at Monterey Pop Festival with his original Jimi Hendrix Experience band. That's when he put his guitar on fire and smashed it. He first did a stint in the army then became a sideman for other black artists. He went out on his own and traveled to London, UK where he made a huge impression. The Beatles had come out with Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and a few days later when Jimi was at the Nine Inch Nails club, he played the song while Paul McCartney and his girlfriend Linda were in the audience. Paul said he was so impressed and honored. Linda later introduced them since she knew Jimi when they both lived in New York City. Eric Clapton was there too and ran out of the room when he heard Jimi's playing. Jimi's version of Bob Dylan's All Along The Watchtower is a classic. Check that one out. Even Dylan was impressed with it. They almost met, but that's another story.

I always enjoyed a well-played guitar, I grew up on certain old school rock'n'roll artists like Hendrix that my Dad would continuously play on his Record player at the weekends -
but I think the first song I really heard for myself & obsessed about (guitar-wise) was Bon Jovi's 'Dry County', I had just started my first job & their album was the first thing I treated myself to from my first paycheck! 😁❤

Nobody had ever played like that before and we were awestruck. We will forever regret his untimely passing.
However I must disagree with Stevie being regulated to copy cat status. He didn't try to copy but rather pay homage and help introduce him to new generations. Stevie was incapable of playing any song the same way twice as music just flowed out of him in the moment. He has a great body of work in his way too short life and it goes beyond simply being perceived as copying one artist no matter how well he could do Jimi's work.
In any event they are both jamming together in that heavenly band and I can't wait to hear them both again✌️💙

Oh wow, I've missed a lot of your videos recently for some reason, haven't seen the notices 😞 But I'm so glad to see you're covering this particular performance of the greatest of them all 🙂
Quite a lot to say about Hendrix as I grew up in the 70's and 80s listening to his music. His style is a lot different than SRV's. SRV tends to play well, and with soul, but... "correctly". He plays everthing with passion and skill, and... correctly. It's hard to explain, until you see that Hendrix tends to not worry about playing "correctly", but will simply jump off a musical cliff not knowing what lies beneath, and create magic as he floats to the ground. Another way to put it is, he will simply toss an bunch of notes in the air and play with them as they drift to the earth.
Something else you have to consider: guitars at this time did not hold tuning as well as today, so just one go on that whammy bar could send the whole thing completely out of tune, but you'd never know it as Hendrix sees that as his playground as well lol. He is know for producing sounds with that axe that no-one has yet figured out, even with all of modern technology.
Your comment on the camera work here brought to mind a story that the bass player of my old band told. He lived in Nicaragua in the 70s, and when Carlos Santana did a concert there Mark was hired to work the spotlight, despite having no experience with it. Well on the night Mark did wield the spotlight, but at the same time was being fed various "substances" by his dealer throughout, and thus that light was very rarely pointed at Carlos. When meeting him after the show, apparently Santana said, Oh, so you're the guy who f...ed up the show! What memories 😆 I have no doubt the cameraman at the back of the audience was not entirely at one with his own brain 🤣🤣🤣
As for the audiences of that period. They were typical of rock audiences of the hippy period. The whole vibe was about being mellow and laid back; dancing was all about flowing with the music. They're probably all a bit stoned out of their minds as well haha. Note that in the 70's when quualudes were popular whole audiences would fall asleep at some concerts 🤣
Just one last thing to add: Beyonce called him the sexiest man who ever lived. I'm straight, but I cannot argue with her there lol

  • @PaleHorseShabuShabu

Concert cinematography back then wasn't what it was today.
Jimi was one of my early guitar heroes along with David Gilmour and Eddie Van Halen. I can watch the same performance of Jimi's 20 times and learn/notice 20 new things. Also, shoutout to Noel Redding on bass and the great, vastly-underrated Mitch Mitchell on drums.
I know you said it doesn't matter that he's left handed, but it kind of does. When Jimi started playing left handed guitars were as common as they were now, so he took a standard guitar, turned it over, and strung it upside down. It would affect his playing, especially when he played guitars like Stratocasters where the cutaways aren't as deep on the underside. I'd think it would throw off the balance as well and could be awkward as far as where one hooks the strap.

Jimi Hendrix - Hey Baby (New Rising Sun) from this show is a much better show of how he created a song. There many live videos from other shows but this seems kind of personal. It is all in nuance ... So sad they lost the video near the stage. But look for the Hey Baby .. or other shows to get a better grasp .. Love Ya ..

He was obviously left handed. He was known to walk into clubs and be asked to sit in with the band, given a right-handed strung instrument and just go at it. Let that sink in- all the strings are upside down, completely wrong for him. And he’d play it as if nothing was wrong. Add to that the fact that he was likely drunk and high half the time while doing that. Guy was a force of nature.

So God allowed him to leave a little behind for two younger geniuses in the making - SRV of course, and Prince is the other. They both got his swag and talent. Prince didn't do a lot of guitar playing on his songs but my understanding is that he is proficient at numerous instruments. Idk much about the man but I know a lot of his music just by being a teen in the 80s. He was everywhere!

One things for sure my friends….there will never be another……how could there be ? Just listen how could there be…the unparalleled, unequalled, unmistakable Mr James Marshall Hendrix.

Jimi introduced us to his style of playing. Stevie Ray Vaughan cleaned it up and moved it forward.

I think Jimi made a pact with the Devil but the Devil screwed Jimi by letting Stevie Ray Vaughan take all the bows for it. The recording of live music comparing the 60s and the 90s was like night and day.

To me, SRV's version is much cleaner and more defined. Not taking anything from JH, different time, equipment, etc. I just prefer SRV.

I don't understand this "clean" argument. Jimi created a whole atmosphere of sound with his playing. With Stevie all you hear is strings. All those "noises" Jimi is making is 100% intentional and part of his artistic expression. Jimi was beyond just playing notes clean, he played sounds to go into the soul and body of a person, not just clean notes. This is why Jimis on a whole, other conceptual level of music that's hard to truly understand for many. Stevie was great but he was just a player. As Jack Bruce said Jimi was a force of nature.

I agree, I'm old enough to remember both men in their prime. I have to tell you if I'm remembering; both me had the same effect on you as a listener. Jimmy did his thing less polished, if you remember Jimmy was in the Hippie era, people were not looking for perfect...clear highly polished work, we got all that in the fifties and early sixties. When Stevie hit town he was raw and aggressive yet much more polished then Hendrix! Both men were perfectly suited for the level of adulations they received!
PS, I love you enthusiasm...just the way I reacted back in the day !
