Jack actually would kill Ian in a real fight but here he was a bit hesitant to hurt Ian when he claimed he was telling the truth and that I think allowed Ian to hold his own against Jack. I really hope Ian stands up to Carl instead of allowing him to influence him like Phil did with him most of the time.
Thinking of it the 4 hardest guys in ee are phil (ageing hardman, even though he was ageing like 7 years ago), jack (he is pretty solid but is leaving), carl (a hardman who has never had a fight) and max (who is just your average womaniser that can stand his ground, i think they have toughened max up though). When jack leaves they will be no proper hardguy apart from phil.
Carl made Ian say he saw Max tamper with the brakes of the car involved in the crash that almost killed Phil and injured Carl. Carl was an evil bully who wanted Kirsty to himself, and she was married to Max at the time - the only way to ensure Max was out of the way was to put him behind bars.

I know ian didnt want to hurt jack infront of abi and denise because hes a nice guy. If he wanted to though jack would have died that night.
