    I love picking the F series. I love a challenge. I'm an apprentice locksmith. About 4 months experience and your videos are helping me keep my running start. Thank you!

    This is still one of my favorite videos of yours. Really invaluable info on the most common Schlage sets in the US. 👍

    Thanks for taking your valuable time to explain the different quality levels. No body I know would be able to explain the differences better than you with your hard earned working knowledge of Schlage and Schlage style products. Thanks for investing in your youtube family.

    Great video,
    I have my problem with the F series is with some cuts put the spring in the shear line. But was once told to me that well Schlage was looking at using a key to open it and it that case that problem doesn't matter much . Lol😆

  • @Nite0wl

    LAB actually makes those springs, and the T pins. Schlage's pin kits are made by LAB (and include LAB tools like the key gauge and follower) but just has Schlage's branding on the case and printed inserts.

      Nite 0wl lab makes everyone's pins except Medeco :)

      Jeff Moss More or less, but they don't make all the pin kits.

    Dammit Jason. Every couple of weeks, I always find myself binging on episodes of "SE Lock & Key" 🤣👍👍 Having Chromecast makes that so, so simple to do 😄

    • @selock

      caveman Sparks the 560 is a really nice twist on the "original" 160 series. It supposedly had working locksmiths input on design (so they said) Compared to their other stuff, I kinda believe it 😂

    I have improvised a hollow plug follower made from a SHARPIE MARKER CAP, cut the solid tip off the cut the pocket clip off and filled the nip off smooth and TADA

  • @grsu3427
    @grsu3427 2 года назад

    This was so helpful as I am pretty sure I have the same F series, BUT my follower fell out and so did all the pins and a ton of other things too. I am wondering what are the little tiny ball bearings also these different thickness thin wafers that might be pins. The other things like the T pin and springs were fine and I just reassembled those and the lock works, no problem, but what are the 5 wafers pins and about 7-8 (maybe lost some) balls? thanks so much

    • @selock
      @selock  2 года назад

      The wafers means it was masterkeyed and the tiny balls means it was construction keyed. In theory when the homeowner uses their key it moves the balls into the holes and removes the ability for the construction key to work.
      Ideally you would remove all those and key that lock (and your other home locks that use that same key) to fresh new keys so neither the master key or construction key will work.
      In others words, you don’t need them. Dispose of :)

    It has been several years, and nobody seems to be making aftermarket compressible cylinders and parts. Schlage is reaping huge profits on replacement parts from the fragile and highly wearable cylinder parts where old brass kik cylinders usually outlast the knob set. Are they waiting for something to come off patent, or are they expecting this to go away?

  • @WiliamBennettwildarbennett

    Edsel Ford must have been responsible for this ingenious idea.

    Those compressibles are a PIA. I don't like working on them.

      The Lock Picking Lebowski .. Have you ever tried picking them.? I find them very difficult, especially with a wild biting. Spring tension is very heavy..It’s a tough lock to bump, snap or rake. At least they are not drill protected like the Dead Bolts are. I give these about 10 minutes picking and if no luck, out comes the drill..

    • @thelockpickinglebowski633

      Peter D'Ambra I find them easy to pics, but that's mostly what I do besides create challenge locks.

      Don't try to master key, to much pressure on cap.

    Ha Ha! . Forgetting to put on the locking clips still happens occasionally even after thousands of rekeys. I’m afraid as I’m reaching 70 it’s happening more and more. 😤

    • @selock
      @selock  7 лет назад +2

      Peter D'Ambra I really *facepalm when I get a lock back on a door and check the key and realize I forgot a dang clip on one :) The farther you have to walk back to the truck, the more likely it is to happen ;)

    Once again thanks Jason. Sorry but still don't and probably never will like the compressed or as we call it floating cap design. Added expense buying special springs etc, that isn't necessary and it's the end customer that has to pay more. I'm in Canada (Toronto) and could write you a novel about the problems we have here. As well as all the new rules that have been implemented in regards to our locks (deadbolts as well as knobs) that we aren't allowed to use on any new construction as well as renovations. Has to be a lever handle, can't use knobs any more. Once again the customer ends up paying more and looks at us as the reason they have to pay so much. As for the Schlage / Dexter, just a piece of crap.

      Its amazing what problems government will invent when times are good. They could just f*cking stop making laws, until one is actually needed. But no, they can't stop themselves for any reason

    Ok n
    ow that I've had the opportunity to rekey a couple of these... And I am really not happy with them...
    Ok 1- Q? Do you only use T Pins in the bible ? Because I tried to use the Top pins in the Rekeying Kit from CLK?

  • @matthewray7065

    Perhaps it’s just me, but it seems like Schlage’s residential line has significantly decreased in quality in the last several years. I’d be concerned about how well these compressible cylinders would hold up with daily use in most applications.

      I am presently doing about 100ea, F series (F51). Master Keying for an apartment complex. So far all is working out well. But you are quit limited with a Master Keying System on this series with expansion. You could be fooled by the Schlage Keying Kit 40-132, as there are no Master Pins/Wafers in this kit, leading to believe the F-series could not be MK.

      @@assakesomanlockman7179 Thanks for responding.
      I've only master keyed about 12-15 of them at different times and noticed they were a pain. I've been using another quality brand with a traditional Schlage style cylinder. I had to replace all the knobs on our main office which required 15 knobs and was determined not to contend with the F series. 🤠

  • @Mirauge
    @Mirauge 5 лет назад

    For the record. These cylinders are trash. You can defeat them by pushing up on any of the pins hard enough with a deep hook. Pop the top cap, and turn the lock. Be sure you have a replacement cap.

    • @AuGold808
      @AuGold808 3 года назад

      That's really good to info to know. I hate picking these locks to rekey them and prefer to just drill and replace the cylinder since I've acquired some from old hardware.. Was just looking at buying a few online and they're expensive so maybe I can just go w the caps.. Brute force em and rekey em and move on w my day

    I still don’t understand this design! The floating cap and exposed springs make no sense to me. F series= F’n series. Just flat out time consuming. Ok I’m better now. No I’m not. I hate F series !
