    For everyone interested in Via Rail travel: they have a Tuesday seat sale every week, where they send you an email showing discount fairs (if you sign up for the email). They also have points system (Via Preference) for free travel. I love them and use them whenever I can.

    Many folks dislike facing the rear; I enjoy, however, enjoy watching the view recede gradually, rather than flickering by the way it does when facing forward. One of our most enjoyable trips recently was in a sleeping car roomette on Amtrak's Crescent from New Orleans to New York. The trip was paid entirely from our Amtrak Rewards Mastercard points! Pre-VIA Rail 51 years ago after high school graduation, two of us rode in coach on CN from Montreal to Vancouver, rode our bicycles across the continental divide to Banff, then rode CP in coach back to Montreal. CP was a little more expensive and had domed observation car for coach passengers. CN was spacious but proletarian - a rolling party! Looking forward to your experiencing more VIA, and maybe Amtrak. Thanks for your thoughtful reporting!🚄

    For Future reference. Via Rail Launches the new reservation system. So, as long as you start booking the trip. You can select your seat too. From Row 10 to Row 16 is normal forward facing seat. So, pay attention with those rows. Hope that helps.

    Hi Alina! Welcome to ViaRail. I love Canadian train travel. In the day I was a frequent rider on the Turbo between Montréal and Toronto. I can only imagine that this train ride is now faster than before, on trains that even more modern. My last train ride in Canada, also a long time ago, was when I moved from Montréal to Saskatoon. This was more a slow and scenic ride taking just over 48 hours with two overnight beddings. I was always comfortable, and the bar car was fun too.

    • @AlinaMcleod
      @AlinaMcleod  Год назад +2

      Oh wow, 48hrs is quite long!

    • @honouraryapple
      @honouraryapple 3 месяца назад

      It's currently nowhere near as fast as the turbo train. The privatization of CN in the 90s has destroyed via rail. Passenger trains have to plan their schedules around freight trains and pull over whenever a freight train goes by.

    My father worked for the railway and he had a pass to ride Via Rail. It was a great experience to ride the train growing up, and it inspired me to ride every route as an adult. The train from Toronto to Vancouver is a great experience, I’d recommend trying to book a sleeping car as a coach seat would leave you very tired after a few overnight journeys. Churchill is also a neat trip, and when I went up there, there was a dogsled race, so the baggage car was full of dogs and sleds going up to Churchill for the race. Some of the trains have a dome car, which is an elevated glass bubble which allows 360 views!
    The Central Canada trains are great too, very convenient to get from city to city.

    I took the VIA Rail with my ex from Toronto to Montreal in 2004 for around $30 and it took four hours. There’s the 401 heading into the autoroute 20 but its like a six to eight hour drive with frequent stops to eat and to decompress and the train was a more sensible way to arrive there alert and refreshed. Its not a bullet train but the accommodations were comfortable and clean and I enjoyed the trip and you get to see things you miss when you’re flying from one city to another.

    I've been taking the train since I was 7 (on my own, Ottawa to Toronto, meeting my grandfather under the clocks, then on to Burlington), back in 1968, when the night before grandfather would call to remind me where to meet and to stay in my seat, not go to the "club car" (a little restaurant) when in Brockville, or else I may be going to Montreal. I've also done many trips from Toronto to Montreal to visit my military husband when he was posted there before I was to move there, too (which didn't happen as he was posted back to Ontario), and while we were posted to Germany, on visits to Canada, Ottawa to Quebec City (in laws lived there). Last summer, hubby took his first trip since the early 80's in basic training. He enjoyed it, slept most of the way from Toronto to Ottawa. You look young enough, that you may have taken the Go Train to Niagara Falls. It's color scheme outside is green and white.

    ViaRail are fantastuc. My experience suggested that they wrote the book on customer service. My 19 year old son had to have the station paramedic attend him with what turned out to be appendix issues. Everyone was so helpful at Toronto station from the baggae lady to the manager. We travelled 2 days leter and they pre-boarded us, made sure he had space then made sure Montreal station had someone to meet us and then again at Quebec. Everyone just wanted to help us. The trains were very comfortable, fully recommended.

    I've taken VIA rail between Saskatoon and Winnipeg (round trip) a couple times. Definitely cheaper than flying (at least at the time) but longer that travelling by car. It takes about 12 hours by train because VIA shares the rails with CN and freight trains take priority and the train is almost never arrives or leaves on time, but you don't have to drive... lol. Driving takes about 9 hours with stops from Saskatoon to Winnipeg. But it's cool to be on the train and relax, read a book or go into the viewing car. Would like to take the train from Toronto to Vancouver one day (or vice versa), that would be cool trip to see so much of Canada. Then maybe take a train out to the Maritimes to see the rest of the country. :)

    Have used the Via Rail along that Toronto - Montreal - Quebec City route maybe 4 times. The first time was Business Class Toronto - Montreal and that was really good for a great price. Can't remember how much it was other than it was good value to cheap. And the food was great, served by a butler type woman, and just kept coming. With a lot of the journey alongside the lake and St Lawrence seaway - very impressive. Long haul from Toronto to Quebec City though - far better to break that up with a good stay in Montreal. Overall I found the service on these routes really good. Brings you straight into the CBD areas to link up with excellent transport services to take you wherever you want to go. Far prefer this to flying.

      @@JimMork Don't know on other routes. But on the routes from Toronto to Quebec City I was on you got served. Economy seat is like on an airline service, pay as you go, with the food choices better than expected. Business Class with a butler type service all food was served on a plate with good cutlery and was exceptional. I remember really good steak cooked how I wanted it with a range of very well cooked vegetables. But it did not stop with that - I may have had 5 meal types - entree, main, dessert, cheeses, coffee/tea with cakes - just on the journey from Toronto to Montreal. Drinks were regular. - whatever I wanted - served in a glass. Left the train feeling the service was absolutely phenomenal with exceptional Canadian manners and politeness.

      Frankly Canada is too large without the population density even for Toronto and Montreal. Worldwide HighSpeedRail (HSR) trains WIN the passenger battle with the low cost airlines when the journey is THREE hours or less at whatever the speed, but LOSE that battle when the journey is FOUR hours or more. Amtrak's Acela ridership numbers reveal this FACT, winning the less than three hours DC to NYC, but losing the nearly four hours NYC to Boston, and LOSING BADLY the nearly seven hours DC to Boston. Less than five percent of those boarding in DC or Boston travel the entire route. Therefore HSR has a time and distance restraint WORLDWIDE that HSR advocates FAIL to mention...

Not cheaper than air, but all the benefits you mentioned for VIA apply to Amtrak. On the train there were two food options, the Bistro and the dining car. You meat strangers in the dining car. But I got really smitten with the Bistro which was selling hot food late. The room trips included dining car. But for coach I liked the Bistro more.

    Actually that section of the só called Corridor is not all that fast. It has sections of 160 Km/h, but most common speeds are 130/150 Km/h, with some local restrictions. The comparison with high speed trains is not fair, because those run on dedicated lines specially design for those kinds of speed. In this case, it 's a so called 'conventional line ' . For the kind of service operated, it is ok

    I know that in both US and Canada people travel mostly by plane, due to the big distances, but even so it always seems very weird and annoying to me how underdeveloped the rail system is, that there are no high speed trains to take you in only 2 hours to large distances. 5.5 hours Toronto - Montreal by train is just too much, for example. Plus, the train is not too cheap either, so not a great deal...

      Montreals metro is actually pretty good. Not enough ticket machines in my experience so you end up waiting a while, but other than that, good!

      When I stayed in Laval, I found the metro rook me everywhere around the city. During my time Montreal, I never even took the bus because downtown was walkable and I had no problem finding my way around. 😝

    Via Rail is OK for shorter trips but it would takes 4 days from Toronto to Vancouver and the longer trips are just too expensive.

      If time is of importance, its better to fly where you need to get to quickly. If you’re sucker for scenery and aren’t bothered by passing time, the train can be a relaxing experience. It really depends on what your needs are.

    You did not mention whether your fellow travellers were constantly loudly on their mobile phones, such as is the case here in the UK. I gather France prohibits phone use in carriages. Vive la France!

    I took a day trip from Kingston to Toronto last week. The trip came up quickly, so the fare was quite pricey at almost $300 round trip. The seats were OK for a shorter trip, but I found that they were a bit stiff. The food options were good and reasonably priced. Staff was great all around. The Wifi was spotty in places, but the electrical outlet at each seat was definitely useful. Overall, I’d say it’s a decent travel option, but the pricing could be more economical and competitive. For comparison, the Megabus fare would have been about half, although the trip would have taken a half hour longer each way.

      Many celebrities around the world support Ukraine. I would like to highlight one that I just discovered. Rachael Ray. In her interviews, her love, passion and conviction for Ukrainians is so moving. She has been to Ukraine five times since the full invasion providing Medical Kits for soilders, toys for displaced kids from donbass who lost their parents and much, much more. Each time she goes to Ukraine, I quote "Ukrainians have renewed my strength and passion. Her nationality is American - Italian but in heart she feels Ukrainian".

    Ah Via Rail, well what can I say about it. They are trains, they will get you there. You were in the Golden triangle area where the Government cares a little bit about passengers. I've taken Via between Viking and Winnipeg both ways and found that train was rarely on time and lots of sidings stops so the important trains (freight trains), didn't get held up by those with human cargo. I've never seen as nice a Via train in the West as the one you were on. Although I like trains, I hated getting on a train that left as scheduled and went a mile and sat for 4hrs watching freight trains go by. My 16 Hr trip in one case took 22 1/2 hrs. Since the great stay at home event of 20,21,22 I've I've only taken some sight seeing trains out of Jasper who always advertise the restaurant car with a nice menu will be open, but no it's been closed, and train crew don't know why. Just got a memo from head office saying no food service for when I traveled.
    Problem is after Japanese rail systems from Shinkansen to single car local diesel trains, I can't help but think Via should be taken out behind the barn and put out of our misery. It spoiled me for what train travel could be. I once had Via ask why I didn't use train more they didn't like that in 13 to 14 hrs I could drive what took 22 1/2 hrs on train, or take 6 hr plane flight counting security. Plane fares could vary between 30 dollars more to 30 dollars less than train fare often.
    So do I love train travel, yes in Taiwan and Japan, but in Canada let's just say I don't hate Via, but I'm not impressed.

    We can't let government off the hook, we deserve better train travel in Canada. Our most populated route has a comparable geographic size to Japan. We could have high speed trains, and all capital cities should have basic service restored.

    Thanks for the review. Never Travel with VIA rail. Last train I travel on, was BC rail. From Lillooet to Pemberton. Traveling long the shore of Seton Lake, and Anderson Lake. Was what I remember. I didn't appreciate it then. I Do Now. Especially When the BC Liberals sold BC rail to CN. And CN discontinued the service. Never see that again, in that way!
