You asked how we feel about this? Well...I feel absolutely perfect right now. This is fire!!! Been a Townshend fan for as long as I can remember, 50+ years😅 anyway. Like John said in the comments... MORE TOWNSHEND PLEASE. Thanks man, loved this one. 👍👊😁
A very fine performance of a very strong track from the genius of Pete Townshend. I would like to however give some special recognition to percussionist Jody Linscott, and drummer Simon Phillips. I well recall the amazing work they did on the WHO’s 1989 tour, and made fine contributions to the excellent performance featured here.
Have you seen his band Protocol ? Great band. Hopefully I’ll be with Simon in a couple weeks. I’ve got to know him the past 10 years. I’m friends with some of the guys that are and have been in Protocol.
So glad you did this. There is a great story behind this song. This never should have happen but Pete thought he scheduled Simon Phillips (drummer) a week later. Seeing he was there Pete went home to grab the demo of this song.
One of my favorite Pete Townshend solo performances is when he performed "Won't Get Fooled Again" at Monty Python's "Secret Policeman's Ball" concert. It is just Pete on acoustic guitar and a guy named John Williams playing classical guitar onstage. Pete sings all the vocals. It is "Won't Get Fooled Again" like you've never heard it before and Pete puts on an acoustic guitar performance for the ages.
I forgot to mention, originally there was the "Secret Policeman's Ball" concert which was recorded and released on an album. The next year Monty Python held the "Secret Policeman's Other Ball" concert. When they released the 2 concerts together on a single album, it was called "The Secret Policemans' Balls". 🤣🤣🤣 Classic Monty Python.
Great concert from 1985 with an all star band. Pete gave all the lead guitar work to Dave Gilmour. Simon Phillips on the drums killing it, he later toured with the WHO in 1989
Pete Townsend solo at his best: "The Sea Refuses No River" , "Slit Skirts", "Rough Boys", Live "Save it for Later" (cover), Live "Face the Face". These would definitely be a good start
A long time ago (must have been around 1980) a friend had a VHS of an impromptu concert with Pete and Gilmour at a pub in England. The band was quite small, as impromptu would indicate, and it was one of the best such performances I’ve seen. Never was able to track down where it came from or find another copy. And the friend left us long ago. Evidently the two of them would make such appearances on occasion unannounced to the public back in the late 70’s and early 80’s.
When Townshend was asked about the song he said "give Blood was one of the tracks I didn't even play on. I brought in Simon Phillips, Pino Palladino and David Gilmour simply because I wanted to see my three favourite musicians of the time playing on something and, in fact, I didn't have a song for them to work on, and sat down very, very quickly and rifled threw [sic] a box of stuff, said to Dave, "Do one of those kind of ricky-ticky-ricky-ticky things, and I'll shout 'Give Blood!' in the microphone every five minutes and let's see what happens." And that's what happened."
This was such a fun and exciting performance. Although Pete and David are legends, and the band are all very talented, IMO Simon Phillips on drums steals the show here. I see that you and others also feel the same way. What a long and interesting career Simon has had playing for a great many of the best groups. As much as I love the Who, I believe i prefer Pete's solo work. He is a genius. I have a special place in my heart for the lesser known album "Rough Mix" that Pete did with Ronnie Lane, formerly of Small Faces & Faces. Ronnie was struggling with MS and really needed the money. Pete was a great friend from way back in the days Who toured with Small Faces in the 60's. This is a lovely album where Pete and Ronnie alternate songs , but I really love the last song where they play together "Til The Rivers all Run Dry" it's a beauty.
On the studio cut you can hear Simon with those double bass notes at the end so much better! That man GAVE BLOOD to fill every tiny spot of this incredible track!!
Don't overlook the percussionist here. Not only Simon is on fire but she is also. I think her name is Jodi, can't recall her full name.Played in a few of Pete's solo projects.

Simon Phillips- one of the greatest drummers ever. This song is from a great album.

@@djimaging2 I have not, but I'll check them out. I've liked everything I've ever heard from Simon. Thanks for the suggestion!
Simon Phillips on the drums works so well with this group. What an amazing live show.
The album was a solo project called White City. Around 1985 or so. I love this live performance...thanks for the reaction.

Simon Phillips killing it on the kit... Great tune...

Pete is great with an electric guitar, but his acoustic playing really is something special.
You cant get better than this. Amazing performance.

I really like "slit Skirts" and Rough Boys"
Drummer is slappin'!!!
There are no less than 17 performers on stage and they all sound great together.
This song...! Townsend ( IMO) is pure brilliance.
