Hi, So, in the past couple of weeks, two different people have (rightly) called me out for the bitter irony of opening this video with a statement about Black Lives Matter and then subsequently neglecting to mention that there is actually a third assault in this film, of an aboriginal woman. In retrospect, it's kind of surprising to me that it took so long for it to come to my attention... but I felt I needed to address it, because they're 100% correct. The thing is, the original version of the script for this video *did* acknowledge that sequence, but it did so in a kind of negative way for reasons that frankly aren't important, and when I got to the final stage of editing it, I realized that putting those critiques into this particular video was gross as hell, and so I just excised it and in the process completely removed a critical piece of the story itself as well as the argument I'm trying to make here in this video, and that's a legitimate failing on my part. I should have figured out a different way to bring that scene into the discussion and I didn't do that, and I'm sorry. -Alec
It is very off-putting in general to put this kind of message in when you're trying to say something important. We all take our own meaning from the movie and we don't really need or want people to do that...I cannot actually watch your review now, I'm sorry.
I would have had to just give up on this whole thing if I couldn't use it to say things I think are important, ya know? Especially in the context of this movie, considering how important systemic oppression is to the narrative.
Thank you so much for your wonderful review of the " Nightingale ". This film impacted me in much the same way it did yours. Their were moments where I actually screamed out loud for Claire to commit exceeding violence upon the antagonists and I was not disappointed !!
It felt as if I personally were satisfying my bloodlust upon those dispicable characters. I actually couldn't wait for Claire to wreak her vengeance in the most hideously bloody way !! I rarely get this worked up emotionally while watching a film, so that says a lot for this film !
i literally cannot stop thinking about this movie. for the past year, i've googled it at least once a week, searching for any new content about it. ergo, this week, i found this video.
coming from an australian woman born in tasmania that saw this film in cinemas at it's release, this is an amazing review. this is one of my new favourite videos of yours. your knowledge and respect about everything and everyone you speak about in your reviews never fail to amaze me. and thank you for using your platform!
I loved this movie, but it was so hard to watch. The thing was, I still felt that catharsis. (The ending on the coast, with the peace of the sun, and Billy accepting what happened makes me cry.) Also, I understand why the MC was unraveling but I disagree with the assertion that one of the men didn’t deserve it that the movie makes. He still participated. I’m upset that she had to reach that point; that Billy had to reach that point, after he lost his family, and the moment he realized his entire tribe was dead. They both don’t deserve what happened to them.

Great review! I think it’s important to mention a lot of the protagonists abuse she faces is because of her nationality. Irish people were often treated as second class citizens by British colony and have faced 100s of years of oppression up until this day so Im really happy that a movie finally opened up to the parallels between irish and black communities. Keep up the good work man superb stuff!
I loved and hated this movie. It really speaks to the vile racism, white privilege and misogyny that has permeated every culture, past and present. It’s a hard watch, but so is today’s news feed. Great animated review as always. Your intro was very powerful and sad.
Can definitely understand that. It's just so much to take in and is frustrating at times, but in a way that feels right for the story. It's just super upsetting, really.
White privilege? What white privilege did the Irish woman have as she was raped and her husband and baby were murdered. You fool. BTW it was misogyny and it was anti Irish racism.
ebulating They meant white privilege in the context of *British colonialism* & the countless ways they maliciously disrupted so many brown and black cultures around the world 😞 The Brits were never happy with their cold gray island and stuck their _pale tiny meats_ into anything they could 😬 Many of their actions have repercussions still felt today! @@ViperliciousOG that's the point, white privilege is a narrow modern and quite frankly simplistic view of the world. You can't talk about white privilege when you are referring to British colonialization exactly because of the Irish situation. When you say white privilege there is an inferrence that nations such as Ireland didn't have it as bad under colonialism because they are white. I think that's probably why there's the visceral reaction above at the mention of white privilege.
You gave me goosebumps at 9:10. I really appreciate the thought and emotion you put into this review.

I have just finished watching this movie which I brought today and it is one of the saddest movies I have ever seen. I cried so hard for all of those who live and lived in Australia, the true owners of this beautiful country our sacred indigenous peoples. I just watched this movie. As an indigenous and black person (they, them) thank you for being an ally. Your review was beautiful. Much love and we'll wishes.
Just keep scrolling if you don’t want to read, but I really want to say my piece. I just finished watching the Nightingale and came directly to RUclips for reviews and I’m glad I came across your video first. I really wish I had some context about the movie before watching it because I really thought it was just gonna be a typical revenge movie. I had no idea how bad everything would get and how much I was to be thrown into this movie. Like my eyes are still puffy because I cried so many times. That movie took me through so many different emotions, from sadness to despair to frustration to irritation and hatred to surprise to a strange feeling that I can’t even explain. My heart went out to Billy and Clare, and no matter what I was feeling I couldn’t take my eyes away from the screen

Great video, man. I wasn't digging my nails into the palm of my hand while watching this, but I felt like that emotionally. Throughout the movie, I just felt unease, buried anger of sorts. I teared up at times, but only let go and cried at the very end. The ending is so goddamn powerful.
I watched this movie at 2 a.m., not knowing what it was about. I was terribly shocked, I even screamed at one very heavy scene, even though I've never screamed because of a movie before. It's traumatizing and beautifully written at the same time.

Thank you very much! I don't think something being pre-written means it's not from the heart, though. Just saying. Hope you aren't disappointed by the rest of it!
I wanted to watch this movie but I didn't know what was disturbing about it. So I watched multiple reviews and yours is the only one I saw that actually said what happened and I am so grateful for that cause I would be so fucked if I watched it, I'd can honestly say I'd be a empty shell and will most likely relapse into unhealthy copping mechanisms.. so thank you. I am definitely subscribing.
While this is my first video of yours I'm seeing, I'm very impressed with how eloquent you are, and how you convey the true severety of the scenes at hand. I haven't seen thw film but after your review and one other i saw from Amanda the Jedi I am going to try and find it on Hulu. Fantastic review and I can't wait to see more from you.
I knew something very bad was going to happen before I started watching but it still makes you absolutely sick to your stomach. As a woman and as a mother it really does gut you.
I watched this movie and it broke me before the most horrible thing happened. I couldn't sit through the scene. So my husband and I stopped it. He skipped the scene for me and resumed the movie. I just couldn't. I was pregnant at the time and I just couldn't. Hearing her baby cry broke me deep.
I have finally watched this - having put it off for... years. And it is one of the best (but most brutal) films I've seen in a long time. Everyone should be made to watch this truth be told. Especially all those who crow about "empire" and the benefits of colonialism. I will be watching it again (with extreme difficulty) and ensuring that as many of the people I know have it rammed into them too. Essential viewing, and a genuinely masterful piece of cinema. (Also: thank you for your review. Excellent; and the first of your videos that I've seen. I will be watching more)
Man this was an incredible review! I can’t stop thinking about this movie, it got under my skin in deeply uncomfortable ways and then surprised me with a slight smile at times. Thank you for being on this platform and making these reviews. New subscriber, keep on going! I think you’re gonna be big ❤️
This is an extremely valid criticism, and actually one I share. This was in general very difficult for me to write, in part because it took a while for me to figure out the center of it. When it came down to it: I had difficulty articulating anything meaningful about Billy and his experience in a way that it's comparatively easy for me to talk about Claire... One thing I noticed while looking for assets was there was not a single high-resolution image of Billy by himself anywhere except from when he's painted himself up at the end, and I didn't want to use those shots or the ones that featured Claire, so I had to go into the film itself to grab a shot of him as he typically is. I dunno. But I'm sorry that I disappointed you there.
What is the title of the Hong Kong.. flick you mentioned? I can't find it anywhere! I need to make sure I have the title correct.. I think. Love yer work. Instant fan. Thank you.
I'm still undecided about whether or not to watch The Nightingale, I want to, but I'm really weary about the parts that people keep mentioning as horrifying. There are things that I've seen in movies that I regret ever letting into my brain...
Maybe read a thorough synopsis so that you can prepare yourself for anything that might be triggering. I do that sometimes for films involve SA and other themes that might be hard to stomach. This is one of those rare times that spoilers might be helpful.
Nightingale did such a great life of showing how shit life was in colonial Australia. We all know and learn how terrible Aboriginals were treated and still are treated in Australia but we forget how shit the life of the innocent civilians who was sent to a faraway land for minor crimes of survival such as stealing bread or even small crimes such as stealing bits of metal to sell off. The first ancestor I’m aware of in Australia was a 12 year old boy my x8 great grandfather, he was sent to Australia from Scotland for stealing a door knob and selling it off for scrap. He spent years as an apprentice farrier for a solicitor. He was let off early for good behaviour and the solicitor took him on as an apprentice legal clerk, he then moved to the Morton bay colony to set up a legal firm before eventually moving to Brisbane. He was one of the lucky ones and we should never forget the thousands of Native and Settler Australians, men, women and children slaughtered for nothing.
Thank you for not showing any clips of the assault here. I’m a year late, but I just watched the film last night. I actually had to turn it off at around 15-20 minutes because I didn’t expect THAT. Hadn’t seen any reviews, or even heard of the film. Made me ill. However, I’m glad that I finished it.
Something I found incredibly sad about this movie is how so often innocent parties who are around Hawkins get punished for his actions. The only person Claire is able to kill is the least culpable of the three officers, and seems to actually show some remorse for what he did (technically what Hawkins ordered him to do). The soldiers also take 2 convicts along with them to carry supplies. They don't say a single word through the entire movie, but we can see their facial expressions when Ruse barks orders at them. It's because of the actions of the soldiers in kidnapping an aboriginal woman, that one of these convicts gets a spear through the throat.
This movie was so damn good because it was so damn disturbing....thats rare in cinema these days. A masterpiece for sure but a hard pill to swallow. Love the lighting in your review setup studio! Awesome boca on the lights and I dig the purple and magenta vibes a ton.
Took me 4 hours to get through this. U are spot on. It is worth the pain. Hard to recommend this and oddly the most impactful since Saving Private Ryan. I haven't been so moved since now.
That's an interesting comparison because Jennifer Kent explicitly said she doesn't think it's like Saving Private Ryan because of the way that movie ultimately glorifies its violence in a way that, say, Come and See does not. I watched Come and See in the wake of that interview, and she's quite right: ain't no glory in that movie...
Everyone is affected differently and they're very different... but if you had that visceral a reaction to Irreversible, honestly I would not recommend watching The Nightingale.
It's certainly not a film I'd watch on a regular basis, but I still love this film and I think that it's unpleasant, but fantastic. To paraphrase Tom Baker, out of every evil must come something good. The Nightingale gets a 10/10 on my charts.
Dude. This is the only video of yours that I've seen, so I don't know what you're like 'normally' so to speak. Watching this I found myself caught up in your facial/physical communication more than what is coming out of your mouth to the degree that I feel the need to ask you : R U OK? Cause it seems like you might not be coping too well. Do you have support?
@@TheWeekIReview I don't find it annoying at all. No really. Not trying to be a troll here. It's just that watching your facial communication I got the impression you're a bubbling cauldron of despair about to spill over - which is why I asked if you have support. If I'm totally getting the wrong impression, great! :D😘🖖🎈
That may well be the case! If you watch any of the other videos on this channel, you will see that that's also just what I look like all the time when I'm talking. (I get comments to the effect of "I hate your face / Your mouth is so creepy / etc." almost daily across various videos.)
The Week I Review Well anyone who hates your face clearly has personal issues with genuine people, having emotions, or critical thinking 🙄 You’re an animated guy who happens to be talking about something heavy. If you were giving a presentation or speech I would listen tf up because I’m convinced you give a fuck about whatever topic you’re speaking of. Thanks for being a real one ☝️
I love a good movie, which this one is, however as a black person the amount of racism I had to get past in this movie was difficult, since I have never understood why people are racist. I had to fast forward thru some of it in order to finish the movie.
Don't be scared, its an excellent movie. Well worth it, its nowhere near as bad as it's made out to be. It doesn't celebrate violence, it only uses it to get the message across.
You don’t get it .both Aboriginal people and White Irish Catholics were treated the same in The convict era. Both ripped away from family and country.. they led parallel lives . Both treated with disrespect and without compassion . It was not just a black and white thing.
3 scenes. There were 3 brutal scenes, not 2. Can you not see the irony of you talking about acknowledging the struggles and oppressions black people face, and then not even mention that third, horrific scene where an aboriginal woman was taken from her child, brutalised, then killed. perhaps it's not that big a deal, I'm sure it's nothing deeper than the fact your focus was towards the main characters. But still, you left her out of the story, you forgot her. There were 3 scenes.
Well... what I'm going to say here is likely to make you feel even less of me, so I'm sorry about that. You are entirely correct that there are three scenes of brutalization and I left the third out. And I shouldn't have. I specifically said "two scenes against protagonist Claire" because I had not forgotten the aboriginal woman at all and, indeed, I talked about that scene with the aboriginal woman in the first draft of this script... but it was specifically how the performance took me out of the experience in a bad way. I realized in editing that that was *incredibly* inappropriate and I should just keep those feelings to myself, so I didn't mention the scene at all. But I should have discussed it in a more appropriate way. You're right that it's important that it's in the film and that Claire's pain isn't the only one that gets depicted onscreen and my not mentioning it creates that bitter irony. I'm sorry.
@@TheWeekIReview I hoped that was the case. I think no less of you for making that decision. It's a tricky thing to balance and navigate. I'm just glad to hear that it was an issue you carefully considered and not simply overlooked. I now can understand your reasoning for excluding that particular scene. Thank you for taking the time to reply, explain and listen to this concern. Thank you for not forgetting her.
Good review, but I don't know why everyone seems to forget to mention the r*pe of the aboriginal mother in the movie...and so much focus is placed on the main protagonist when there is so much to say about the aboriginal depictions in this movie and Billy's story. I just wish I could hear more commentators speak more specifically in depth about those.
I see you did not read the pinned comment. But also... I don't really think that I'm in any position to speak to the quality of aboriginal depictions in this (or any) movie. I get the bigger picture point you're making and you're 100% correct that more people should be talking about it, but *I* have absolutely nothing of value to add to that conversation.
Addressed this elsewhere: totally valid criticism. I originally did discuss that scene but the things I said about it were mostly negative because I don't think that scene works nearly as well as the others... and that didn't feel appropriate at all, so I removed it from the script. I should have acknowledged the scene regardless, though, you're very right. (And I'm sorry that I didn't.)
Did you watch this film? You are describing scenes that did not exist. You are an “ally” for the Black Lives Matter movement? Black people don’t respect you or appreciate you speaking for them. Are you sincere in your beliefs? Or are you just trying to fit in so you don’t get bet up by them?
I just watched the Nightingale. What an education. What a trauma. This whole world is built on white privilege. The damage the white tribe has done and the legacy left behind cannot be fixed?. We must learn to live with it, this evil. Knowing the reality of the past, I hope will help me heal in this future. This movie will stay with me. Great/powerfull review. Thank You
Yeah, Claire had heaps of privilege thrust into her. Screw your stereotyping. You and racist people like you are a large part of the problem and are too ridiculous to realize it. So there's no explaining why.
Sorry but this movie was trash. I like the director's last movie the babadook but this was horrific. The villain was the best character of them all. This movie was choppy. The setting was great but the direction was all over the place. Everyone is saying that it was brutal but I find it very low. Im still waiting for the big pay off.
Most of my responses to comments like this are pretty flip... but I'm being completely serious when I say that you seem to have a startling lack of empathy. Maybe you should talk to someone about that.
@@owusui tbf I agree with you, I liked the theme and the actor playing the villian was great but many of the scenes do just carry on without a strong direction. Yeah I felt connected to Billy and Clare but I'm not sure if it was the acting or the screenplay but I felt there could've been much more depth added to the characters. It was good but I kinda felt like they got lazy, he's aborginal and she's an Irish penal convict so that's all we need, the interactions between them felt very shallow, "I'm not your boy", "I'm Ireland". That's expected, I would like to see more added to the characters .
Why did you have to politicize this! This is a movie review. How opportunistic and loathsome! Keep your woke ---- to yourself! If you feel such empathy go sell all your worldly possessions and give ot to all the oppressed.

Glad I could save you from that!
The Nightengale and Come and See are the only movies that have made me legitimately despise humanity and some of the things we've done.
Have you seen Wolyn (Polish movie)?
While this is my first video of yours I'm seeing, I'm very impressed with how eloquent you are, and how you convey the true severety of the scenes at hand. I haven't seen thw film but after your review and one other i saw from Amanda the Jedi I am going to try and find it on Hulu. Fantastic review and I can't wait to see more from you.
Well thank you! There's plenty more to see. I've made too many videos at this point, frankly.
@@TheWeekIReview I very much look forward to being enthralled by said too many videos. :)
The movie is a masterpiece. I was stunned and awestruck. Btw, you need more subscribers ‘cause you deserve it ❤️❤️❤️
I knew something very bad was going to happen before I started watching but it still makes you absolutely sick to your stomach. As a woman and as a mother it really does gut you.
I love your intro! You have created a new fan of yours !! Thank you!!
Thank you so much for this video! You are a fantastic youtuber, I love your reviewing style :) Immediately subscribing!
Well thank you so much!
@@TheWeekIReview thanks to *you* for the great content! 🤗
I will be watching more)
Hard to watch morally; but great acting and very authentic! Oscar worthy!
Man this was an incredible review! I can’t stop thinking about this movie, it got under my skin in deeply uncomfortable ways and then surprised me with a slight smile at times. Thank you for being on this platform and making these reviews. New subscriber, keep on going! I think you’re gonna be big ❤️
Well thank you very much! I appreciate that.
Powerful review, only wish we'd focused more on Billy. Thanks for all you do!
Thank you.
I didn't mention any HK movies, I don't think? Did you mean Han Gong-ju? It's Korean.
I'm still undecided about whether or not to watch The Nightingale, I want to, but I'm really weary about the parts that people keep mentioning as horrifying. There are things that I've seen in movies that I regret ever letting into my brain...
It’s hard to describe, however I wish I could watch it again for the first time. It’s like getting the wind knocked out of you. Just idk…Watch it.
Maybe read a thorough synopsis so that you can prepare yourself for anything that might be triggering. I do that sometimes for films involve SA and other themes that might be hard to stomach. This is one of those rare times that spoilers might be helpful.
You are an absolutely amazing human being! You care so much about others I hope you don't neglect yourself. Cheers 🍻
Such a good review, deep, sincere - I just finished this movie and am processing my thoughts and emotions, you have helped me along there
Well thank you! Happy to have helped.
Fantastic review - discussion of depth without giving away the movie.
Yeah that's rough as heck. Sorry you had to experience it like that.
watch Becky (Kevin James) & Vivarium (Imogen) & Little Monsters (Lupita)
One of these days I will definitely watch at least some of these.
Welcome back c:
Thank!
Thank you for this. Sincerely 🙏🏻
You're very welcome.
To be fair; a male director, would not have been allowed to make a great movie like this!
I’m loving the glasses. You look sooooo cute 😊
Well thank you!
This movie was so damn good because it was so damn disturbing....thats rare in cinema these days. A masterpiece for sure but a hard pill to swallow. Love the lighting in your review setup studio! Awesome boca on the lights and I dig the purple and magenta vibes a ton.
Thank you!
(I'm glad that my setup successfully hides the fact that I'm shooting in my living room.)
Oh thank God. So glad to see you back.
Well thank you!
@@TheWeekIReview Simply that it gave me the jarring feeling of it. Not to give direct comparison. Not the same genre. Cheers
I can’t say enough about this film. Incredible work.
At last someone speaks the truth, Australia’s Shame, My Shame
Would you say this is as triggering as Irréversible?? Because I watched that and had nightmares for weeks.
This is such a good review thank you so much 😭🙌🙌
This is my favorite "Jesus your face is so annoying" comment in at least two months. I appreciate it when people are creative.
I saw it today on hulu this movie was dark especially the beginning.
1825 they didn't believe women bc they were women and judged by what ppl do to her, in 2022 nothing's changed...
Australia needs to change too.
This needs more views.
i'm scared to see a film, for the first time since childhood
Don't be scared, its an excellent movie. Well worth it, its nowhere near as bad as it's made out to be. It doesn't celebrate violence, it only uses it to get the message across.
it was easy for me to watch because I just kept reminding myself that it's just a movie, its not real.
People without empathy are weird.
I'm Not sure if this is how you are all the time or if the movie just moved you, I hope its the latter
You don’t get it .both Aboriginal people and White Irish Catholics were treated the same in The convict era. Both ripped away from family and country.. they led parallel lives . Both treated with disrespect and without compassion . It was not just a black and white thing.
This is probably the first movie that I want to be spoiled to me.
Hell F*cking Yeah, Great Intro!!!!
Damn how do you not have more views
One of the great mysteries of our time...
where I can watch it for free ?
Hulu.

Thank you for not forgetting her.
good job mate 👏 i actually enjoyed the realistic aspect of the film A+
Good review, but I don't know why everyone seems to forget to mention the r*pe of the aboriginal mother in the movie...and so much focus is placed on the main protagonist when there is so much to say about the aboriginal depictions in this movie and Billy's story.
I thought he was going to apologize for being born white. Glad we are making progress without apologizing for things we can not change, like race.
This was quite the watch! Good work man, remember us when you're famous!
No war but class war?
Canada is guilty, too!
wow what a film. what a western.
Interesting that you started with a BLM message, and then ignored the rape scene with the Black Aboriginal woman... 🤔
💔
D:
is that rape scene really so bad? tell me how it looks like
No
Wtf is with the looking at the side?
I don't understand the question.
I HATE THIS WORLD
Relatable.
Did you watch this film? You are describing scenes that did not exist.
You are an “ally” for the Black Lives Matter movement? Black people don’t respect you or appreciate you speaking for them. Are you sincere in your beliefs? Or are you just trying to fit in so you don’t get bet up by them?
gosh, the wokeness oozes with this video
How do I block your channel??
This is probably my favorite comment I've ever received.
Thanks, bro.
Jeezus! THANKS for the friggin' ⚠️SPOILER ALERT ⚠️ pal! 👎
You're welcome. :)
That's such an idiotic statement, you obviously have no understanding of history
Sorry, had to shut the video off after your cringe intro. You realize the director is white, right?
Sorry but this movie was trash. I like the director's last movie the babadook but this was horrific. The villain was the best character of them all. This movie was choppy. The setting was great but the direction was all over the place. Everyone is saying that it was brutal but I find it very low. Im still waiting for the big pay off.
Most of my responses to comments like this are pretty flip... but I'm being completely serious when I say that you seem to have a startling lack of empathy.
Maybe you should talk to someone about that.
Hey i didn't make the movie..it was boring 😴 . Lacked substance...just my thoughts and im entitled. You say it worked, I say it didn't do it for me.
Keep politics out of your reviews, just some advice, we didnt come here to hear a preach
Why did you have to politicize this! This is a movie review. How opportunistic and loathsome! Keep your woke ---- to yourself! If you feel such empathy go sell all your worldly possessions and give ot to all the oppressed.
You're such a loser.
Hey soyboy did you actually watch this film. The main victim of racism was Irish.
Lol ok.
My favourite film I'll never watch again.
